Walking out of a movie is not something I usually do, but this pathetic excuse for entertainment sent me "theater hopping". The characters of Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore were annoying to say the least and the dialogue as well as the plot were unrealistic and just plain stupid. Being "of a certain age" myself, I was looking forward to seeing Ms. Keaton, but this contrived piece of drivel will make me think twice before seeing her in another "Made for AARP members" flick!… Expand

This was absolutely pathetic. definitely one of the worst movies ive seen this year, if not this century. absolutely nothing worked, the "gags" were absolutely lousy and worst of all, the acting is completely unconvincing. the closeness between the daughters and diane keaton, their mother feels completely forced. mandy moore is completely wooden and looks like she's reading her lines off a flash card. overall, all the main actors look completely uncomfortable. no wonder.… Expand

Not quite bad enough to become a cult favorite, "Because I Said So" is still Diane Keaton's worst film.

This is the first movie I have ever, and I mean ever, that I have given the score of 0 to a movie. Usually I would reserve such a rating for the blunder of leaving the lens cover on the camera before shooting. And rarely do i write a review a movie because I did not like it but this movie I hated so much I could not resist to give others warning to stay away from this poor excuse for a movie. It took me less than five minutes watching before I took this movie out of the player and back into the jacket. !!!WARNING SPOILER!!! To illustrate just how horrible this movie was I will describe the opening scenes. The movie starts out with a mother at her daughters reception along with her other daughter she is trying to fix up. She sees a handsome man in the distance and points out this among others facts to her daughter. She warns her daughter not to laugh the way she does when she gets nervous because she sounds like a pig. So far it seems super fiscal and slightly too involved which is what the movie is about so I continue watching. The next scene is the mother getting a phone call from her daughter. The daughter is in her slip upstairs still at the reception with the man she just met less than a hour ago. His bare feet are prompt up humming waiting to get it on. Her mother reminds her that this man is financially well off. When her daughter baulks her mother reminds her that one of her breasts is smaller than the other which triggers her daughters insecurity to go ahead and have sex with this man. I understand this movie is about a mother being over controlling but this just goes over the top. This is not just about simply funny dysfunctional but seriously psychologically disturbed behavior. I felt this movie made light of something that should have been portrayed as a serious offense. In my opinion not the best role model of movies.… Expand

I loved it, if your human and not a lame boring person, then you will love it too! Trust me you won't be wasting your money by going and seeing this, it's a cute and funny film with an amazing cast.

This movie was surprisingly OK, considering the negative reviews. I think that many critics were disappointed because the quality of Diane Keaton's movies has been so consistently high, so when one comes along that's just basically entertaining but not great, everyone is disappointed. ""Because I Said So" is a lightweight confection, not a great movie, but it's still enjoyable if your expectations are not too high. Watching Diane Keaton is always a pleasure. She is beautiful and engaging and delightfully stylish in her own incomparable way. Would a mother really pick up her cell-phone in the middle of sex to gab with her daughter? Rather than treat this seldom talked about act as the disturbing perversion that it is, the film treats this parental kink as a demonstration of Daphne's close bond with her girls. If Amy Sherman-Palladino and John Waters collaborated on a script, it might look something like "Because I Said So"...and then they'd burn it. The tone of this "Gilmore Girls Gone Wild"-like chick-flick is so frothy, you almost miss the skanky fact that Milly (Mandy Moore) is sleeping with two guys. Worse yet, she's sharing a bed with Jason (Tom Everett Scott) because the dude is loaded. That's why it's hard to sympathize with Milly when she learns about the genesis of her enterprising relationship. Meanwhile, Johnny (Gabriel Macht), the love of her life, realizes that Milly is indeed a skank, and you pray that he doesn't go Jerry Maguire on us in order to win the girl back. He has a young son that says "'gina" everytime he sees a woman. In a film that shows a senior citizen visiting porn sites(and a dog who knows how to use it), the tuna that Milly uses for her cooking demo is probably meant to be euphemistic, a cookie for those pervs who are aficionados of anatomical slang. "Because I Said So" is pretty dirty for this genre, maybe refreshingly so. Given the choice between a film that puts you to sleep, or drives you up the walls, I'll take the latter. Be forewarned: "Because I Said So" has not one, but two sing-a-longs.… Expand

Are these the only types of roles we can offer Diane Keaton? Absolutely terrible. Even my girlfriend (a chick-flick lover) hated it, that's how atrociously bad it is.

Sort of entertaining. Some of it is rather absurd, but hey, it's only a movie.

Saw an early viewing of this movie since my girlfriend begged me to bring her.... I've never had suicidal thoughts, but I knew if I walked out of this movie, I would never hear the end of it... However, if I died, I would no longer have to watch the movie, and best of all: no fighting. Honestly, this movie is "Something's Gotta Give", but worse. Horrible character development, over-the-top bad acting, horrendous writing... I really could beat this dead horse for a page or so, but you get the idea. Bottom line: If your girlfriend wants to see this movie, persuade her to wait for the DVD and take her to see "Dreamgirls", "The Queen", "Pan's Labyrinth", or something that is worth your 10 bucks. One of the Worst films in modern film history. It is painful to watch. It makes The Holiday look like a chick flick masterpiece. Never before has a chick flick been so bad, maybe with exception to Gigli. Avoid, or so help you god.

I should have read the reviews before I took my mom to see this. I have never walked out of a movie--at this one, I RAN OUT!!!!!!!! It was absolutley AWFUL!!! Bad, bad acting (I wanted to slap hysterical Diane Keaton), full of cliches and unlikely dialogue, who's mother is this??? Who tells her mom at her sister's wedding that she is in fact upstairs having sex with a guest? Is this supposed to be cute and funny? I gave the film a 1 only because I liked the outfits and the interior design of the apartments. everything else about it is just a waste of the 2 days it looked like it took to write, film, and produce this film.… Expand

The only reason I didn't give this movie a zero is because I adore the cast. They did the best they could with the material, but the movie was awful awful awful. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I loved this movie!!! I don't know why the reviews are so bad, b/c it was extremely funny and great casting. Lauren Graham was amazing in it. It's a movie if you want to laugh!!

Horrible, horrible, horrible!!! I have not seen such a pathetic movie in a long, long time. I am stunned that Diane Keaton (who is a fabulous actress) would associate herself with such a film (if you can even call it that).

I have loved Diane Keaton since I was 10 and my mother made me watch Annie Hall for the first time. The only thing worse than spending 2 hours of your life watching a soul-sucking, cliche, predictable film that is ultimately offensive to just about any female with a brain, is watching such a brilliant, talented and grounded artist lower herself to being a part of it.

I would actually rate it as not so bad and sometimes even funny light comedy romance. A mother (Diane Keaton) sets up a date for her daughter, but fails to control the situation and the other, less perspective, guy pops in. Definetely not as bad as the critics say.

I wasn't expecting much at all of this poorly rated romantic comedy and it shocked me because I enjoyed it so much. I warmed to the characters and due to it's genre I do not expect a complex plot or a completely new storyline, what I care about is the characters and the directing. I found this a warm and enlightening film that left me with a smile on my face by the end. As long as you aren't expecting a complex and highly developed drama then I think you will be pleasantly surprised by this warm and uplifting film.… Expand

I thought it was funny and witty. I thought it was enjoyable. I got some good laughs out of it. I enjoyed the cast.

Do not dare see this movie. It is one bad gag after another; a giant cliche that goes nowhere.

Milly's polka-dot dress looks great, and Mandy Moore looks even cuter than usual wearing it in Because I Said So. Take note of this, because talking Milly into buying it for a date is the ONLY piece of good advice that Daphne (Diane Keaton), Milly's psychotic, control-freak mom gives her in the entire movie! Because I Said So is a chick-flick-from-hell (and no, guys, not ALL of them automatically come from the hot place. They really don't!) that's a uniquely painful experience because every scene, sequence, plot point and gag is so deadeningly, thuddingly secondhand (or thirdhand or fiftiethhand). If a character is lugging around a huge, elaborately designed cake, you automatically know that said pastry won't make it safely to a table without first making a detour straight to someone's face. If a romantic comedy heroine has to choose between a solid, dependable guy who makes a decent living, and a freewheeling nonconformist who dresses funny and can't control his obnoxiously bratty kid (who informs every woman he meets that she has a vagina--just like in Kindergarten Cop, only that time it was funny) you don't need your Spidey sense to predict that solidness and dependability will come in a distant second. And in the fine tradition of Must Love Dogs and other interchangeable films of its sorry ilk, you can bet on a "Loser Montage" of highly inappropriate potential matches for the heroine, scored to a golden oldie (The Honey Cone's "Want Ads", and completely missing the point of the song) and teaching the same valuable life lesson we all learned from Sleepless In Seattle, namely that if you've got allergies or funny-looking teeth, you might as well just give up because you're totally unworthy of being loved. Even the aforementioned polka-dot dress bit in which Milly swears up and down that she won't be caught dead in it--and then, presto!--is predicated on a beyond-trite editing gag common to countless bad movie comedies (and roughly every third episode of Gilligan's Island). Further evidence that director Michael Lehmann (40 Days and 40 Nights), who once shocked and delighted us with the groundbreaking black comedy Heathers before completely blowing his wad with the expensive turkey Hudson Hawk, has thrown in the towel, Because I Said So has two genuine virtues: the year's best movie title so far and a typically delightful performance by Moore, who seems to be under the impression that to get our attention she doesn't have to monopolize the tabloids and the Internet in the manner of the Britneys, Lindsays and Parises...she just needs to do onscreen work that never disappoints; she was a lot of fun playing unsympathetic comic foils in American Dreamz and Saved! but was equally good in such straightforward films as the moving, Christian-themed romantic drama A Walk To Remember. Here, too, Moore is engaging and enjoyable to watch, lending her role a freshness and spontaneity that triumphs over her material, even the horse laugh that's directly cribbed from Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality and forced on her. Yes, you say, but what about Diane Keaton? Well, given the virtually unplayable meddling mom she's taken on, I suppose she's more bearable in it than, say, Rosie O'Donnell or Roseanne Barr would be, but it's still a shameful career low. Peter Biskind and other critics of 1980s American movies like to claim that artistic expression took a dive in that decade as maverick directors gave way to superproducers like Simpson/ Bruckheimer and even Lucas/ Spielberg, but they usually fail to note that careers such as Keaton's provided some welcome exceptions to the general trend. Keep in mind that in the 1980s, Keaton frequently worked in such challenging and not always commercially viable dramas as Reds, Mrs. Soffel and The Good Mother...and while the occasional frothy flick like Baby Boom occasionally made its way onto the plate, it didn't comprise the entire meal. Think of Keaton's career over the past 15 years and at best you recall Something's Gotta Give; at the most aggrssively mediocre you think of the two Father of the Bride remakes...and at rock bottom there's this. But even that disturbing point to ponder takes a back seat to the most essential, burning question that Because I Said So causes its viewers to leave the theater or DVD player asking, namely: "Is it ethically viable and/or legally feasible to have a restraining order put on your mom?"… Expand

How annoying can one woman be? Come back mother-in-law, all is forgiven. If you can stand to watch this movie without wanting to eject the DVD, player, TV and any female in the direct vicinity from the 10th floor of your apartment building, you are either a buddhist monk in anger-management class or someone has locked you into a cage and, tied you in a straightjacket and pinned-back you eyelids. I'm normally not given to killing women but this movie had me thinking about it. They should make a video game where you can shoot the cast.… Expand

As much as I love Diane Keaton and want to say that this is a worthwhile movie, I just can't bring myself to do it. The story has plot holes so large that a John Deer could fall in and never be found. The ridiculous sexual undertone is completely tacky and unnecessary. It's predictable, underdeveloped, and not at all clever. It's worth seeing if you happen to have Netflix, but it's not worth seeing in a theater.… Expand
