  1. A pungent pleasure from start to finish.
  2. One of the great movies of the 1960's, but it has been, in this country at least, maddeningly elusive. In spite of its bitter edge, Billy Liar is pure Ambrosia.

I admire this sharp satirical comedy, graced with superb direction, acting, and cinematography, for having the courage of its unexpected and unhappy ending, which could serve to illustrate Thoreau's famous observation that "most men lead lives of quiet desperation."
