It's a great movie with great actioning. I'm not for the guy's love story line, that was just weird, but if you looking at the base storyline and the acting that came out of this movie. It was a great movie to reflex a different way of life and there struggles. I wouldn't pay for this movie in the theater, because of the storyline. I waiting to it came on the movie channels before I watched it.

WOW! The very best film I've seen since "Powder". I felt as if I really knew these chracters... and that ain't easy these days. I recently scolded myself in a way that makes it difficult to get out and about...I'm glad I made it to this one! It was a lobster that burned my genitals and I just purchased a laxtex fist for my friend Gary this Christmas season. Be strong and enjoy this film. Expand

First, let me say that I really hate it when the hero gets killed by a deus ex machina. In many ways like Million Dollar Baby, another Hollywood tear-jerker where way too attractive actors & actresses pose as real people in a naturalistic world full of artifice. I did feel a smidge sad when Heath found his shirt (though I saw it coming when the shirt went missing in reel 2), but mostly I felt that these two dudes were too mopey and existential to be real gay cowboys. I mean, unless I missed something, they're not supposed to be French, are they? They behaved like starry-eyed teenagers past the point (and age) of believability; as much as I could buy the first half hour of meet-cute and the last five minutes of human loss, the big fat middle was a dull TV message-movie. Did Matthew Shepherd really die for this? And brand me a stereo-typer, but (in my limited experience) of most of the gay couples I've met, at least one of the partners displays way more of a fey affect then either of these two stoic shepherds ever showed. Overall a good movie. For those with open minds, the movie offers a lot to think about. As I read the reviews below, I couldn't help but think the following.....for those saying if the movie wasn't about "gay" cowboys it wouldn't be acclaimed is like saying if Titanic wasn't about a ship sinking it wouldn't have been such a success. For the obvious Christians who slammed the movie because of its content (yes, I am a straight male Christian with a family), this movie offered great insight into those who are different than most of us and how those people are affected by the intolerence of the rest of us. Before you praise Christians so much remember...the guys at the end who murdered Jack probably called themselves Christians. Good insightful movie. If you keep an open mind you'll learn. If you don't keep an open mind, don't bother seeing it and go see Hostel (you won't have a problem with that movie). Expand

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN AN IMPOSIBLE LOVE Before I saw the movie, I thought that homosexual people were weird and disgusting. When I heard about this movie and all the awards, I went to see it with my mom (AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE bad). This movie that only costed 11 million $ comparing to King Kong with 209 millon $ was great. From the cinematography...to the way they treat the story. Ang Lee is a Great Director (Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon), and after making a bad movie (Hulk), he continued the good road. Gylleenhaal used to be a bad actor (The day After Tomorrow) But in THIS movie... The Simple and short story was simply wonderful and the rest of the cast LEDGER, WILLIAMS & HATHAWAY (used to be a bad actress to ''Princess Diaries 1&2). Even thow i havent seen Crash, Capote, Good Night and good luck or Munich yet, I hope this little BUT GREAT independent picture will win the top price, best director, best screenplay, actor (lead & Sup), Actress (sup), music (even thow I loved THE CONSTANT GARDENER'S music & The PRIDE & PREJUDICE piano pieces) & Cinematography Expand

As a gay man with gay friends... none of us felt this was a realistic depiction of the way it happens. This movie is a tragedy (in the Romeo and Juliet sense) that could have had power, but failed because of it's completely non-believable depiction of how the relationship formed. If anyone thinks Ang Lee may be homosexual... I would have to say he can't be. Not if he directs a movie with such an unrealistic development of a gay relationship. Expand

If you’ll watch "Brokeback Mountain" by Ang Lee and creating prejudices it’s better not see it. Unlike much of what was said, Brokeback Mountain is more than a flag of the homosexual movement or a test for conservatives on duty and is definitely not a gay cowboys movie as grossly entitled by many. For starters, it's not a western movie, but one of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen. Ang Lee presents us two decades - between the 60s and 70s - which unfolds in the relationship between Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). From the moment they first met, working together on the mountain, known as Brokeback to watch the sheep of a great creator of the region, through the relationship of each of the two with their wives, until the outcome of a love story that can be considered different. The photography is impressive. The mountain is very unique and brings an air of peace and tranquility to the first part of the movie. At this time we took along with Jack and Ennis discovering the feeling between the two. Anyway, the peacefulness of the setting doesn’t prevent the aggression of Ennis in not accepting the new situation in his life. From the moment that the two move apart, the film becomes dark and gray. The life of Ennis without Jack and vice versa is so “coldâ€. Jack and Ennis together promote a glow in the film, a different kind of light that is not repeated when we have Jack and Lauren (Anne Hathaway) and Ennis and Alma (Michelle Williams). The two flee to Brokeback always seeking that peace and light that exists when the two are together, rejecting all the gray and conservative reality that surrounds the mountain. The final decision puts it in check, the window of the trailer, which gives to this world of gray, and the postcard of the mountain, an enlightened place for lovers. The psychological content around their relationship is strong. Is totally wrong who thinks that the trigger for the involvement between the two is a night of drinking around the open fire, but the sure the needs of both. When I speak of needs not only understand by sexual desire, but the loneliness and lack of affection suffered by the two characters. Ennis lost his parents, was created by brother and sister and is not far from a talented cowboy, despite claiming to have ventured into some detours. On the other hand we have Jack Twist, a frustrated cowboy, editor of bulls, some hailed the circuit, moreover, their relationship with parents seems far too much. Upon meeting, Ennis and Jack are kind of a structure to another. Brokeback is a beautiful story because it is a love story. Here it doesn’t matter if we're talking man to man, woman with woman, or man and woman, the characters are the acme of human. The bias is minimized before the purity and innocence in the existing relationship of Ennis and Jack. The two are so real, even in love, that are exactly like the father or the father-in-law of Jack Twist, are conservative, they are also sexist, are selfish as well. Despite their love, to feel an inexplicable attraction for each other, they don't see the sense of their wives, they don't care about the feelings of each other, they care about their own feelings. And then it is worth highlighting the performances. Heath Ledger is fantastic and the Oscar nomination was more than deserved, but then we forget about Jake Gyllenhaal is the same disdain of his work. He doesn’t surpass Ledger, but in no way can be dismissed by solidifying the character Twist. But neither overcomes Michelle Williams, the demure wife off of Ennis Del Mar, which in her world fell off like a glove for the role. Brokeback Mountain is more than the story of an impossible love, I see it more as an essay on the acceptance of something that doesn’t belong to our world by two people so far and so close. There is a story about something real, but about something ideal, which could either be between a man and a woman like any other couple. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Brokeback Mountain is not only one of the best movies of the decade but also one of the greatest movies of all time! A stunning MASTERPIECE! You can't deny it! It's a great love story (almost platonic!) between two young men! Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal give two fantastic performances, making the movie realistic and heart-wrenching. Everyting in this movie is BEAUTIFUL, there are no words to describe It. I remember when I watched it for the first time, it was automatically my favourite movie ever, simply because you have to feel involved in the story. Though the movie describes an homossexual relationship, that's not the point. This movie is about LOVE, that's it! It's a story about TWO PERSONS THAT FELL IN LOVE FOREVER! In the final, if you thought the film would be a cliché, you were wrong. GOD, in the final, Heath gives one of the most devastating scenes in the cinema, you can't help crying everytime you see it. Ang Lee knows how to put emotion into a movie. Gyllenhaal was amazing! LEDGER proved he was the BEST ACTOR OF HIS GENERATION! Forever my favourite movie, a TRULY MASTERPIECE! 10.0! Expand

You know, I expected to be crying buckets but I wasn't. I wasn't crying. Why? Because I cry for joy, not pain. It was a classic gay Hollywood love story, all right- the faggot who seduces gets what coming to him, death, while the beloved is left to be lonely the rest of his life. Lost his wife, kids are becoming adults, his fancy boy went and got himself killed for being too uppity. You know I wanted to love this movie but I just don't. I haven't read the book yet, but I have one thing to say if it ends the same way as the movie- Shame on you, Annie Proulx! I wanted to love this movie, but it was truly disappointing. No way to give either of the queers a little happiness, even in 1983, long after Stonewall? Perhaps another case of overhyping-expectations lead to resentment. At least they got two guys to play the parts. Expand

Gay cowboys are far from my idea of an American love story. Only another attempt of Hollywood to stuff the gay lifestyle down our throats. (no pun intended) As much as they would like to think this is the norm, it is not, and it is not acceptable.

I saw Brokeback Mountain about a month ago and it still haunts me. I'm pretty obsessed by it and I read everything I can about it. All the people here with the 10s have such a reverence for the movie that it's almost like a religious eperience we've all shared. That would make the bigot and the homophobes that hate everybody and everything the anti-christ. Which reminds me of a letter somebody wrote to the editor not long ago saying that when all those things were written in the bible that everybody believed the world was flat. The movie has had such an effect on me that I now have a new respect for the whole human race. And every one I see I can detect has a flame within and is searching for someone to love and be loved by. It's turned into a whole new and happier world for me. Expand

funny how the only movies that ever get good ratings from any of you so called movie reviewers are movies about gay love, or oppressed ghetto high school basketball teams winning a game. truth check... If we throw a little realism in there what will we see... dicks going in man asses, aids, and little kids selling crack, killing each other over a pair of addidas. The glorification and ammount of truth kept hidden in these films is no less than that of old war flicks. You have got to be kidding me. Expand

Yet another of Hollywood's attempts to indoctrinate immorality into the common culture and pretend that homosexuality is normal. The idea of co-mingling with a sweaty cowboy with a saddle chapped behind after a long day's work somehow isn't appealing. Gives new credence to Willie Nelson's song "Mama, don't let your children grow up to be fag cowboys"

Why do people come in here and rate a movie a 0 when it is obvious they never saw it? I mean, when you call homosexuality "sick" in your review, then what question comes to mind is, "Why would you spend $8.50 on a movie that you know is about two gay men, when you are obviously going to be offended by it and not like it?" I doubt they saw it at all.

This movie is absurdly sick. The very moral fiber of our country is deteriorating. I grew up ranching and, trust me, any real self respecting cowboy would not appreciate this. Homosexuality is not part of being a cowboy and has no place in a western movie. Get real people, wake up! You're being misguided by Hollywood and don't even realize it.

This movie was awful. I went into openminded, seeking for some artistic value. There was none. The only critical acclaim was that it took two actors who thought they were performing breakthrough roles, and really, it was just Sodom & Gomorrah the sequel. There was no artistic value, there was no story, there was no goodness, there was no epic quality, it was just bad. Michelle Williams deserves some credit for playing a tormented woman. But where in this world are movies going if this gets marks above decent movies like Crash, or Walk the Line, or Cinderella Man. Movies that actually leave you feeling somewhat replenished instead of drained, dirty, and depressed. Don't waste your time or your money on this joke of an Ang Lee film. Poofta Mountain, the magical place where all the little oomfa loomfa's come to gather at the chocolate waterfalls. They are quite a happy little folk, who love to frolic through the daffodils, and chase butterflys over the rainbow, and have tea parties everyday in the afternoon. Sometimes these happy little folk even like to dance to disco music with glitter balls, and shiny sequin outfits. They also like to play cowboys and indians with each other. This film is shot so well, it actually transports the viewer to that period and location. The performances by Ledger and Gyllenhaal are so genuine for that generation in which the film is shot. However, this is a drama. It requires a mature audience. If you are looking for special effects or lots of laughs, this movie isn't for you. This film is an insight into the lives of two men that are coping with the demands of their society, their beliefs and their love for each other. I thought this movie had a very real feel to it. The end very sad. This is one of the most memorable movies I have ever seen. I would recomend it to almost anyone. Expand

If I had rated this right after seeing it, it would have been a 7 -- but this movie sneaks up on you, gets in the cracks, and before you know it you realize it's one of the best movies you've seen in a loong time. I left the theatre a bit underwhelmed despite the FANTASTIC cinematography and scenery (I grew up in the Rocky Mountain west, and it made me incredibly homesick). The reason I was underwhelmed was probably because the film is so understated: at times I found myself doubting what Jack and Ennis saw in each other, or if, indeed, any of the characters had much passion for anything at all. In hindsight, all the little things that have sat in my mind add up -- statements like "We've got no reins on this one" and "How do I quit you?" (paraphrasing); the quiet and wholly affecting despair of the wives, Ennis' in particular; etc. And in fact, part of the theme is precisely about living a life with the passion leached out of it -- which not only Jack and Ennis were forced to do, but their wives and even, apparently, Jack's parents; grinding poverty can be limiting just as homophobia can. For such a mild-seeming film (on the surface), it wrestles with the deepest emotions amazingly well -- despair and pain and passion and love and hope and fear. And, mostly, it's just about a society that warps everyone trapped in it, with characters that you sympathize with totally even as you want to scream at them and the situation they are stuck in. You can only watch, heart pounding, as the movie veers towards its inevitable conclusion. It's definitely a good movie on first viewing, but becomes truly great in the emotional resonances it sets up long after you left the theatre. Expand

Propaganda Film ********************************************* http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=49036 ************************************************************ The book "'The Marketing of Evil" explains how the far left media strikes again and explains why everyone votes so high. "The Marketing of Evil" has been almost alone among news media voices to expose "Brokeback" for what it actually is – "a brilliant, emotionally compelling propaganda film using every cinematic trick in the book to glorify homosexuality while maligning heterosexual marriage and family." ******************************************************************* The movie contradicts the morals it tries to brainwash people on. Even if you don't take into account the gay theme you will see that going against values. The obviously high rating just shows how the majority acts like sheep. As the bible says, what is good will considered bad, and what is bad will be considered good, and this movie is a perfect example. Well sooner or later we will see love stories that attack the normal way and favor immoral ways, what next a love story about polygamy, pedophilia, and bestiality, etc or is their no limit to depravity? This movie was not all that it was hyped up to be. I went there expecting to at least see a love story that was unique at best, but it ended up being depressing because how careless these guys were about their families and such. I just couldn't stand the two main characters and felt absolutely no sympathy for them. The only reason i give it points are for michelle william's performance and maybe a bit of Anne Hathaway's. This was more of an anti-love story that depicted gays in more of a negative way than a positive way. Expand

Yes, the Movie is slow. It's supposed to be. My opinion is based on rembering that the movie takes place between 1963 and sometime in the 80's. Gay relationships were NOT welcome. I consider it a well written and well acted movie. The movie is a sad one because the love of the main characters is forbidden and takes place outside their marriages. I would consider this a call to acceptance. If their relationship was accepted there would be no infidelity. As for the "hate crime scene" at the end... do you really think that life treats everyone fair. I would call this movie a fair depiction of LIFE. Not every stroy end "happily ever after." Expand

I was not too interested in seeing this movie because I thought it would be a story based on homosexual love. There are many other things I took from this movie - people who are in relationships they do not want to be in, how society can make us comply with thing against our human nature, and how lonely some people can be. If you apply these concepts to oppression around the world, not just to homosexuals, you will be moved by this movie. Expand

Worth a rental, but disappointing. I'm a fan of Ang Lee's films, but Heath Ledger's performance almost ruined the movie for me. I thought his use of his face and mouth was exagerrated and distracting--he was hard to understand, and frankly, frustrating to watch. (I grew up with a grandad who was this "strong silent type," so maybe my expectations are unrealistic?! Grandad was a master...) However, Jake Gyllenhall's performance saved the movie, and the cinematography is beautiful. But, the intensity just isn't sustained, and the screenplay somehow doesn't bring to life the depth and breadth of all those years' hidden love. Something didn't work here, and I think it's in Annie Proulx's short story. The movie ultimately seems at its core like merely an overexpanded idea, relying on a foundation of supposed bleakness that's unexplored. It doesn't quite work, and it's a shame. I thought the Ice Storm understood and explored its era and culture much better, and I expected more from Mr. Lee. Expand

I have never been so disappointed in a critically-acclaimed, Oscar nominated movie in all my life! I thought Million Dollar Baby was bad, but this takes the cake. The people who are giving this movie a high rating are obviously "followers" who take on the opinions of people they deem important. Brokeback Mountain did not live up to any of the media hype. First of all, there was no romantic chemistry between these two cowboys, nor was there any reason to believe they are gay by orientation. Rather, they are stuck in the middle of nowhere for an entire summer, with only themselves. They are about as gay as two inmates stuck in the same cell for the rest of their lives. In other words, if I were isolated for months with a woman, she and I would most likely get it own, too-- BIG DEAL! Where's the romance in that? Ang Lee and the writers failed to show a genuine emotional bond develop between these two. Their attachment was driven by loneliness and libido, nothing else. Heath Ledger was a HORRIBLE actor! I could barely understand him throughout the movie. Being from Mississippi, I pride myself on understanding the thickest of country accents, but even I was lost numerous times whenever Ledger's character spoke. Jake G. wasn't too much better. The best actor--by far-- was the woman who played Ledger's wife. Now, another issue I have with the movie is that neither character showed any struggle with their attraction to one another as it related to them being married men living heterosexual lives. It was hard--in fact, impossible-- to root for them because they showed absolutely no remorse for cheating on their wives and abandoning their families. Never did I really get the sense that being "gay" was hard for them. We are expected to believe that 20 years passed between them, yet we never see any substance to their relationship. These are the same men who--despite the taboo nature of their affair--kiss passionately OUTSIDE the home of one partner whose wife and family are within sight. PLEASE!!! And, speaking of 20 years passing, the make-up artist assigned to this movie needs to be shot because none of the characters--except the children-- aged one bit. In the end, Ledger's character didn't look anymore than 10 years older than his 19-year old daughter. All in all, this movie was all about political Hollywood hype and not about cinematic quality. I would have given it a 1 for the few beautifully shot landscape scene of the mountain side, but after seeing so many of them transition after transition, that got old... so Brokeback gets a ZERO from me! The movie perpetuates the stigma that gay men have no remorse for infidelity and care more about getting their rocks off than being in meaningful, loving, committed relationships with each other. I am very gay friendly and I have seen true love be established and maintained by gay couples. For them it isn't about sex! Too bad America didn't get to see that in this movie. Thank God "Crash" got Best Movie and not his piece of junk! Expand

This moving was utterly miserable to say the least. I give it a 2 for the photography and landscape for where it was filmed, other than that it in no way lived up to its expectations, the "oscar" abilty acting was no where near what one could deem "oscar" the accents made it unbearable, and not to mention there was no timeline for this movie, it just jumped around leaving the audience without a clue for how much time has elapsed. The characters did not evolve and niether did the movie. The homosexual love affair and predictable "hate-crime" ending was only a front to try and make this the most controversial movie of the century, which it definitly did not accomplish. Its acting and plot were glorified for greatness and instead the movie left its audience wondering what they had just paid money to watch. Expand

Why would you make such a movie that expresses homosexuality in such a positive light. It is a sin to love thy gender as stated in the 10 commandments, therefore all knowing good people of this earth should protest the grotesque visualization of sodomy. God Hates FAGS and black people, but mostly FAGS!!!!!!!

This movie is a wonderful movie, but I wonder why Del Mar has to be so angry with his wife. So what if she isn't his true love, it doesn't have to be so violent in cruel. IT isn't her fault she feel in love with a bisexual.

There are a lot of interesting comments on here about this film. Particularly from those who give a low score. Most of those people seem to have missed the point that this is Greek Tragedy writ large. Yes it’s about two guys and some people obviously feel queasy about that. One person wrote that it was [a] movie that destroys the most recognizable icon of America, the Cowboy”. This isn’t the destruction of anything, this is a reader into human beings and the fact that sometimes they can find a way out of the sociological boxes that we are supposed to live in, however briefly. The image of the cowboy came from Hollywood in the first place and bears no resemblance to fact, either in the 1850s or today. That Hollywood has destroyed its own imagery of the Gun Slinging Cowboy is deliciously ironic; if indeed that is what it has done. This has been one of the best films to come out of America for a good while and it is precisely because of the so called ambiguous ending that this is so. There are too many films that end on a note where all the loose ends are tied up and you leave the cinema with closure. “Oh, it’s alright then; they all went and lived happy lives and that’s what happens, right?” In this film true love has been squandered and lives ruined and people have been emotionally damaged. This is the stuff of real life and not of film. The ‘Gay Cowboy film’ tag is a misnomer, this isn’t a gay film. These two guys happen to fall in love and neither one of them sees themselves as gay, “You know I ain’t Queer”, “Neither am I”. Gay/queer is a label and it conjures images of flamboyance and mincing through streets, sometimes wearing horribly tight clothes, sometimes dressing immaculately, of being terribly shallow and hedonistic. That image is as much a creation of the media as is that of young black men who are seen as being into gansta rap and are very good at basketball and are good dancers. It’s patronising and offensive. It is as much a fiction as is the image of the cowboy alluded to above. This is a film that shows that actually you don’t have to be mincing down Christopher Street, the Castro or Old Compton Street to like other men. There are indeed some of us that do this sort of thing and you would never guess in a thousand years, because as Jack says: “it’s nobody’s business but ours”. The trouble with Ennis is that he can’t see that - he sees all the negatives and that is the tragedy of this film. NB - I like mincers and Queens they are family, it’s the media I’m attacking, not you guys! Expand

As a gay man who also hid in a marriage for 7 years this movie spoke volumes about being true to oneself. I, for one, do not buy that either was a bisexual since although I could perform with a woman-if given a choice ,and could have lived in an accepting society I would have been with a man.

Finally saw Brokeback Mountain on dvd. I guess you could say I was hesitant to see it because of the subject matter and all the negative comments that effected my decision to see it when it first came out. Fogetting that I grew up on films that caused contoversy in the early 70's which I regard as a great time for free thinking film i.e. Midnight Cowboy Joe Clockwork Orange I let my prejudices get in the way. Getting back to Brokeback Mountain it is the only film in sometime that stayed with me for days after watching it, the emotion and the subtleness of this film is a tribute to Ang Lee and The actors. Probably the most moving film that I have ever seen. As for the comments of any man rating this above a "1" needing to check himself in the mirror, I am happily married for 10 years and my wife and I have a number of gay friends. This film only highlighted the reality of gay relationships, men or women, in any time period or location. Perhaps its those that have such an issue with this film's content check themselves in the mirror, for as a gay or straight theme, I believe it teaches a message of tolerance....something that is severely lacking today! I just saw "Brokeback Mountain" for the first time today 1/27/08 and I was totally swept away. It was an amazing story built around beautiful scenery. Just beautifully told and of course I had already fell head over heels crazy about Heath Ledger. I will always remember his movies so fondly and how well he portrayed each character with a heart!!!!!!!

Horribly over-rated. The only reason this movie gets such high reviews is because the reviewers don't want to appear as homophobic. This movie is basically City Slickers+ gay cowboys - humor and entertainment.

Two homosexual individuals struggle to be together, bound by the norms and rules of society. At first, I was confused to how fast the story was moving with the very short scenes; but then understood the movie has to be told like this as it takes place over somewhat 20years. Looking back, this method of story-telling was very effective. As a true horror, sci-fi and animie fanatic, even I found this movie breathtaking. Scenery, story and acting was spot on. I've seen alot of movies, and this is at the top of the pile. Everybody should see this movie! Expand

This is an excellent film about two of the most deplorable lives that could possibly be lived. As a film they did an excellent job, the scenery, the score, how the story was executed is all great. I think most of the 0's or 1's are from people trying to let the world know that they also believe the lives of the two main actors are deplorable. And their reaction to the truth that this film got hyped up for the simple fact that it was about 2 gay men. Was it a great film? Yes. Was it hyped up more than it should've? Definitely. As long as the world realizes that there is nothing positive about 1. Fornication, 2. Adultery, or 3. Prostitution then sure its a great movie. I just watched the movie and I'm pretty depressed, no happiness can be found by people who give in to their sexual desires in the way these two characters did. What a colossal waste of my time! One of the most remarkable films I have ever seen. It is perfect. Heath Ledger is brilliant, and the fact that he is gone only makes this film that much more heart-wrenching. This movie belongs to Ledger, but you cannot deny the accomplishments of the rest of the cast - Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are fantastic, as is Kate Mara as Ledger's daughter. Like Annie Proulx's writing, the film was by equal turns rapturous and devastating. Both exquisitely beautiful and gut-punched painful. Do not go to this movie thinking that Ang Lee has thoughtfully sprinkled in some magic movie dust that will leave you feeling good. You will walk out feeling emotionally drained and conflicted. The conflicted feeling will last for days. My explicit advice is that the film be seen in an environment that will promote a feeling of intimacy. See it with someone you love. You will willingly bear your heart. You will feel vulnerable. Heath Ledger fully becomes Ennis del Mar. He is wracked by pain, frustration, fear and guilt that never completely leave him. Jake Gyllenhaal fully becomes Jack Twist. He has a kind of hopeful joy you feel you can drink in great healing gulps. But Ennis cannot be completely healed, he can only be temporarily relieved and the anguish that this causes Jack is fully realized through Jake. Ennis' and Jack's love is made fully evident by Heath and Jake in actions and expressions both great and small. The music of Gustavo Santaolalla is pitch perfect and the screenplay of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana is flawless. I don't feel the need to elaborate on the performances of Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway or the cinematography of Rodrigo Prieto. They were each exceptional and have been praised elsewhere. They were not the focus of my concern although if they had not been so exceptional the film would have been crippled. Please, read the story. But expect to come away from the film with different impressions and understandings. Be prepared to think differently about Jack and Ennis. Be prepared to understand them more fully. I am honestly grateful to Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ang Lee for so lovingly giving Ennis and Jack and their story to us and I will write them to say so. You will be changed by this film. I am confident that this film will join the "canon" of memorable American films, one that will move viewers as much 40 years from now as on its opening day. Ang Lee has made a film that matches the best work of William Wyler's "the Best Years of Our Lives," and "The Heiress." Ledger gives a landmark performance that "wows" like Brando's in "On the Waterfront" and Dean's in "Rebel Without a Cause," Newman in "Hud," and indeed, Michelle Williams is as memorable as Patricia Neal's heartbreaking performance in "Brokeback" screenwriter McMurtry's "Hud." McMurtry has now written the screenplays for three great American contempoary Westerns -- "Hud," "The Last Picture Show," and now, in perhaps he and writing partner Diana Ossana's finest hour, "Brokeback Mountain." And finally, in a time when so few movies seem to be able to stand-and-deliver a gut-punching last line the likes of "Come on Jake, it's Chinatown," "Brokeback Mountain" contains the most richest last sentence of any film in a long, long time. It's the great writer Annie Proulix's words, slightly, sensitively repositioned in the narrative by McMurtry and Ossana and placed within a heartreching closing shot by Ang Lee and cinematogrpher Rodrigo Prieto. It moments like this, when every aspect of filmmaking comes together that reminds us why film is one of the greatest of the arts. Lee's film is one for the ages -- when, in future decades, the story won't appear particularly "controversial," like all great films, the emotional impact it has on viewers will continue to fee true and right. I just saw this movie last night and I still can't stop thinking about it. It was one of the most thought provoking and moving film experiences I've had in recent memory. Ang Lee proves that he can tell a compelling love story without falling into the usual trappings of Hollywood formula. It isn't preachy. It doesn't fall into trite melodrama. It doesn't try to paint these guys as perfect heroes, but rather flawed humans caught in an impossible situation. Most importantly, it doesn't shy away from its depiction of same-sex love or the harsh realities of the time. It is truly is one of the most touching and realistic love stories ever told on film. Isn't for everyone, but for those who are not bothered by the homosexual relationship, it offers a study in yearning, love, and loss. It didn't affect me as deeply as either "The Bridges of Madison County" or "The Remains of the Day," but it evokes some of the same feelings.
