If there's one director in the world who can't make a bad or even ungreat movie it's Bertrand Tavernier. He doesn't go for intellectual conceits, stylistic excesses, egomaniacal posturing. Instead, he makes honest, highly intelligent, and multifaceted films about all manner of subjects. This film about a teacher trying to do his human best amidst social decay and bureaucratic redtape is a sobering glimpse into contemporary French society. And, if the film still feels somewhat hopeful it's an optimism hardearned thru integrity and courage. Expand

A terrific piece of neo-realistic filmmaking.
