He doesn't go for intellectual conceits, stylistic excesses, egomaniacal posturing. Instead, he makes honest, highly intelligent, and multifaceted films about all manner of subjects. This film about a teacher trying to do his human best amidst social decay and bureaucratic redtape is a sobering glimpse into contemporary French society. And, if the film still feels somewhat hopeful it's an optimism hardearned thru integrity and courage. Collapse
