  • Summary: In the town of Cavite, Philippines, people will do just about anything to survive. This is the harsh reality for many Filipinos living in a poverty stricken nation. Adam, an American citizen visiting his home country for his father's funeral, soon realizes this when he arrives at the Philippines Airport and receives a phone call from an anonymous caller letting him know that his mother and sister have been kidnapped and will be killed if he doesn't comply with his demands. Cavite isn't a horror film, per se – its nightmarish sense of unreality is thoroughly grounded in the geopolitical here and now – but the emotions it conjures from the audience can be traced straight back to Shockers 101.
  2. The hand-held camera work gives the film an effective documentary pulse, but it adds up to only half a movie.

The only rational explanation for how an abysmal no-budget film like Cavite could get released theatrically is that its makers, co-writer/directors Ian Gamazon and Neill Dela Llana, have come up with a from-the-headlines hook too big to deny.

Excellent story-telling and editing. The movie also gives you a real feel for the not-so-pretty side of the Philippines is like.

Shaky-Cam travelogue through filthiest parts of the country. Lots of shoe leather. Fell asleep, left after 40 minutes. Acting nowhere to be found.
