Although it holds your attention it could have been a lot better. The title also has nothing to do with the plot.

Possibly the most un-Holywood movie put out this year. It doesn't have an ending where Samuel L. pulls out an uzi and says "YOU FORGOT TO USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL MOTHERF****R!". It doesn't involve a 7 car pile where a gas tanker comes out of nowhere and set the whole highway ablaze. It actually focuses on what a move should be about, human emotions! Samuel L. & Ben Affleck both underplay thier characters which is actually better for the movie that overdoing it. The plot and script are very good and the ending, although not great is satisfying. It's a moral based suspense-thriller without the suspense thriller. But, it sure does nail it's portion of the genre.

Great story, could have been a great movie. Ben Affleck's flat, one note performance choked what could have been a great movie. This was unfortunate because everyone else made really their characters come alive.

Could have been sooo much better! No plot dev. No character dev. Does anyone know who sings the BOB MARLEY REMAKE of Turn Your Lights Down Low at the end? Email me if you do please: tdeyulia@rpginternational.com. Thanks.

Good but exaggerated plot, fine performances by supporting cast. Ending strove for closure, and missed it.

Subtle, smart, serious, and boldly constructed. A beautifully done film worthy of much attention. Amanda Peet gives one of the best supporting performances of the year.

Excellent movie. Captures both the dignity and depravity of human beings in a very plausible setting. It requires no great suspension of belief that lawyers could be this corrupt or that just exactly this kind of scenario could occur and escalate to this level. The acting is very sound especially Samuel L. Jackson.

This movie had great acting, the story was great, and got some ideas across that really made you think.

Cast and director did good job of escalating the consequences of the characters actions, nice plot twists; Jackson was better than Affleck; Pollack was good as lawyer; ending was contrite.

With all the great reviews this film received, I was really looking forward to it. I couldn't believe how bad it was. It was completely unrealistic and contrived...completely!

This is NOT an action movie. For some reason, the adverts for this movie make it appear like it's full of action. It's not, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This movie has so many layers and subtexts it reminds you what movies are capable of - making you think. This movie deals with temptation, redemption, anger, chaos, and reflection. While Affleck's and Jackson's characters collide, each man is dealing with his own demons and his own struggle with whether to do the right thing or whether to take the easy way. It doesn't just show you what happens or what you "should" do; it makes you think, "what would *I* do?" Expand

Much superior to the typical Hollywood thriller. Has the intelligence to create interesting characters and to avoid over-the-top stunts.

One of the most contrived films I have ever seen. Almost none of the plot points were the least bit honest. I can't believe that any thinking critic could have given this a decent review.

Doesn't ultimately have anything new to say, but is entertaining, and well-acted.

Amazing movie! Very suspenseful, with a greater underlyign theme of ethics. Heartpounding intensity throughout the whole film.

It has a point to make and succeeds in making it. A number of contrivances, the worst being having a NYC public school open on Good Friday, could have been avoided.

Better than average thriller. Ben Affleck gives his best here. Samuel L. Jackson is as effective as usual. Thoughtful and riveting.

[**Potential Spoiler**] The acts of revenge Affleck and Jackson inflict on each other should be of equal proportion. We're not supposed to side with either man. But Jackson's character goes too far in one instance, and our sympathies are with Affleck. This is a mistake. The movie already had us involved with its good acting and story. They should've let the stuntmen sit this one out because you might have a hard time liking Jackson after this scene. If you don't, that means the corporate lawyer(Affleck) is the better human. Expand

It's a very good film, one of the year's best. Though, at times it can be too preachy and Amanda Peet, what the hell are you doing in this movie, this movie is too good for you. Her whole part should've been cut out. But the film never fails to be interesting and brilliantly filmed.

+5 points for the ... ending and the cool scene with a 3-wheeled mercedes, -5 points for the complete lack of common sense, logic, self-control and sensibility. would i spent my time better by going for a bike ride? absolutely.

Pretty darn good, given the wild leaps it sometimes makes. Both leads play against type; Jackson by looking frumpy and helpless, Affleck by doing a decent acting job in a worthwhile film. What's with Pollack and boats these days?

If you think you've had a hard day, try this... Jackson plays Doyle Gipson, an insurance salesman who is trying to earn his family back. Between attending AA meetings, he is seeking regular access to his two children. Affleck plays Gavin Banek, whose law firm demands he do morally questionable deeds so they can keep earning from their clients. We see their flaws but if there is a difference early on, it is that Gipson wants to do right by everyone while Banek is blinkered into looking after himself. Beginning sharply with a car accident, Banek makes a choice which robs Gipson of something that can't be replaced. Gipson in turn has something Banek desperately needs. As one man's manipulative tactics are used in increasingly desperate measures, the other's wanting to do the right thing quickly evaporates as he is pushed to the brink and beyond. All the action is played out over the course of a day and what a day it is. I've seldom seen so much packed into one 24-hour period that feels as real as this. Things of course move along rapidly. Just when you think a scene may become bogged down in too much talk, one guy makes his move, sparking off the next in the series of clashes. By the end however, both come to ground with a view of themselves they didn't have when they set out that morning. Damage has been done but maybe some can be repaired as two men learn from each other how to be better and move forward. The ending is a very satisfying one. The writing is excellent and moves between moral drama and gritty thriller. It's not all about two men locking horns as their story is interwoven with background to their lives. Whether Banek in discussion with his wife or Gipson having a dilemma in a bar, these scenes add depth but never take away from the intensity. The success of this film is also largely about the two lead performances. Affleck raises his game while Jackson is as charged as ever. He doesn't radiate hugeness as in other roles, but is just as effective in this often broken character. Both ensure their duel is a fascinating one from start to finish. Expand

  1. Gets too caught up in its escalating violence and strained-to-bursting moral subtexts. It's the blood of souls drenching the screen, and it's a hideous sight to behold.

What these guys do for revenge during one hellish day in the Big Apple makes the panic room look like Barney's toy box. The film itself goes off the deep end way before the end credits.

Rarely have I seen a film so willing to champion the fallibility of the human heart.
