Deep Blue is pure bliss. This documentary about ocean life in all its forms achieves its own tidal pull with visual marvels that conjure a Darwinian delirium.
  2. 90
Jaw-dropping, sumptuous visuals, a lush George Fenton score, state-of-the-art technology and some of the oddest creatures ever seen without recourse to artificial stimulants.
  3. 88
A riveting and sobering way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
  4. Full of splendidly shot wonders.
  5. 80
Numerous films have explored undersea life, but few as comprehensively and as consistently compelling as Deep Blue, by the creators of the "Blue Planet" TV series.
  6. This is as good a visual treat as you and your kids can expect.
  7. For all of its turgid self-importance, its anthropocentric theater of classical music and sound effects, Deep Blue is a gorgeous film with scene after scene of incredible footage.
  8. In terms of pure visual scope, Deep Blue might be one of the best IMAX films never created for the IMAX screen.
  9. 70
Deep Blue is a thrilling film, but not a thoughtful one; it'd be right at home on an IMAX screen, or possibly as the pretty, polished, and vaguely empty Successories poster it closely resembles.
  10. 70
Deep Blue runs just shy of 90 minutes, and this pathetic landlubber of a movie critic must confess to growing restless here and there, an example of how quickly awestruck wonder can turn to apathy.
  11. 60
Much of what the filmmakers and their team of cinematographers capture is undeniably remarkable, but their overt attachment to certain scenes can make watching a chore.
  12. This stunningly photographed documentary captures extraordinary images of ocean-based life.
  13. 60
The episodic structure prevents any real momentum, but Byatt and Fothergill give a visceral sense of the sea's violence and vividly capture the riot of color to be found on the ocean floor.
  14. 50
Those looking for a refresher course on the workings of the food chain should be in heaven. All others may yearn for a sushi break.
  15. 50
    A beautiful but empty-headed documentary.
  16. The documentary isn't particularly thrilling, or even very informative, but it's almost certain to lower your blood pressure for 83 minutes.
