  1. Guaranteed to keep you on tenterhooks from beginning to end - and without much gore. Dowdle and company trade in the usual trappings of the genre for a tantalizing blend of tension, suspense, and mystery.

The great cinematographer Tak Fujimoto has the time of his life on this low-budget horror feature, playing with dolly shots, abrupt zooms, and negative space inside the widescreen frame, and the fun is infectious.
  3. There are a sufficient number of jolts thanks to quick edits and sound effects, plus the script's efficient structure.
  4. By the time the patented Shyamalan Extra-Strength Third Act Twist is revealed, being asked to care about fate, redemption and forgiveness when a satan-in-an-elevator gimmick hasn't delivered is like getting medicinal aftertaste from what should have been a box of delectably fiery Red Hots.

Devil is the sort of story Rod Serling would have taken for a spin in "The Twilight Zone," back in the day. Shyamalan came up with the idea, produced it and got others to script and direct this 76 minute exercise in movie minimalism.
  6. 40
In the end, Devil feels like an ingenious short film pumped up for theatrical release. Shyamalan's story is sound, but the execution dragged me to hell and left me there wondering if his much-rumored sequel to "Unbreakable" was ever going to arrive.
  7. 20
This is the sort of cut-rate cinematic Cheez Whiz that gives religious horror movies a bad name. Still, at least it's not "The Last Airbender."

Ever since the Village i fell off the M. Night Shaymalan wagon because the endings didn't live up to the movie as a whole. Its been like eating cake with no frosting, the best part wasn't there. But this one had a terrific ending and the screenplay didn't seem so bland like his last few flicks. 9/10. Certainly back on the M. Night wagon, to some degree. Expand

Surprisingly it ends up reasonably entertaining although you end up with the feeling you should be far more disappointed than you are. If Shyman had directed this as well as writing it you probably would have been. Expand

Surprisingly, it also has a great use of humour to balance the tension and chills, I eagerly await the next installment of the Night Chronicles. Expand

These people each have a purpose of being in the building at the time, but I guess you can say that the plot rely strictly on coincidence. We never got introduced to the characters themselves besides the detective because we weren't suppose to. As you can already guess {SPOILER}, most if not all of these people die in the end, but the movie never developed the remaining people for us to care for him. Co-written by M. Night Shyamalan, this is probably one of the few better scripts he delivered in the past 5 years. Though I find the subject controversial, director John Eric Dowdle (Quarantine) balanced the film with the same of amount of cinematic tweaks as the religion dialogue. Devil is a great looking religous film, but what it lacks is the force that can drives the film much further. Expand

"When he's near the toast falls jelly-side down"

Most wtf line in this movie. And this movie is wtf. The script is so awful and has Christian proslyzation. After two characters die, you just don't give a **** The basic concept is so good, but we just felt they were all gonna die. The most boring victim of "Satan" is actually the most interesting character. There was no suspense and it feels 2 hours long. Also wtf at the name thing, was that supposed to be a twist? The directing was good, but everything else was so awful, even the CGI. Hellraiser 1 put more fear of omnipotent beings into us than this drab movie.
