I went to see this with my girl kicking and screaming. Midway through the flick she wanted to leave. Just a terrible movie.

Wonderful movie. Being a 'southerner' I felt every pain and twinge of this movie. i have lived that life and I laughed and cried throughout. Wonderful.

I loved the book and that got me into the theatre. The cast is marvelous (it's just great to see that many women's roles in one movie!) but the execution of the story is weak. This could be the result of a first-time director.

The book was magnificent...this film was not. But I think I'd give it an "A" for effort, so it gets a "6" rating from me.

I guess you have to be older-sexier and more appreciative of women to fully understand and appreciate the ironys of this movie. It truly is a sisterhood in the end!

It was great but many of the good parts that explain the story were left out. Definitely a great chick flick if you catch the hidden sarcasm. the cast was perfect and i hope that they decide to do "little alters everywhere" to go along with the Ya-Ya's

I think this movie reveals true friendship in it's deepest form. i liked the Southern background of their lives and history. The cast of actors/actresses was wonderful!

One of the better chick flicks. Actually, it's about family dysfunction, the sisters that were sucked into it, and how they eventually clawed their way out the other side. It's gratifying to see so many critics who had stabilyzing parents find no use for this film, but the thing about life is that there's always something new to learn. In the meantime, this is not the first time I have been impressed by the depth of both Burstyn and Bullock as they mimic the nuances of the psychically disfigured. Yes there appears to be a lot of formula in this film, but the ending is a little subtler than formula could allow. This film is a waste of time for most, but those who find it resonates for them can be assured it is the genuine article. Expand

I'll watch most anything with Ellen Burstyn and she doesn't disappoint in this film, she is terrific. Although it is not a great film, it does have enough good acting and a few memorable moments to give it a look. It's an appealing story with richly developed characters.

This movie was a fantastic tale of four friends who stuck together through it all, including a tragic, unexpected death, trials with alcohol and prescription medications, and the evils of Southern society. It links the generations of an eccentric mother, Vivi Abbott-Walker, and her wounded daughter, Sidda Lee, showing how different the world has become in just a few decades and how some things will never change. What a wonderful film! Not only was it filled with wit and humor, but it also travels deep into the soul of families which, while seemingly perfect and happy-go-lucky, are sometimes complex and anything but perfect. To take an incredibly well-written novel like Ya-Ya and turn it into a movie masterpiece is a true work of art that should be, and will be, cherished forever in the hearts of many. Well done! Expand

See this movie for glimpses of the Ashley Judd from "Ruby in Paradise". It'll remind you that Judd was an actress before she was a movie star. And nobody totes around an oxygen tank better than Maggie Smith.

Wish I'd waited for the video. It was Much Ado About Ya Ya -- nowhere as good as Fried Green Tomatoes, Steel Magnolias, Terms of Endearment. The flashbacks were put together willy nilly, it was a chore to keep up with the characters, and the plot was thread bare and wholly unconvincing.

I adore this movie...it is alot like things that happen in our own lives...they just arent talked about. And they then go on to effect our everyday lives.

During one or two comic set-pieces, you can see the appeal that the Ya-Yas hold for readers. But you can also sense, farther in the distance, the more vital film that might have been.
  2. Khouri's new picture takes all this talent and turns it into the kind of manipulative mush that Hollywood used to market under the condescending label "woman's picture" years ago.
  3. Gives us a lot to enjoy and something most studio movies don't even try for: an attempt at the richness, density and sheer contrariness of life.
