As effective and fat-free as its sinewy star, Luke Evans, Dracula Untold proves an absorbing, swiftly comprehensive origin tale.
If they had to give Drac an “origin story” this literal-minded, at least they had the sense to keep it keen and lively, whittled to a point.

More sad dad and noble martyr than creature of the night, Evans’ dashing Prince Of Darkness inspires less fear than just about any incarnation of the famous character, save perhaps the one played by Leslie Nielsen.
Looking for plausibility in a movie called Dracula Untold is as pointless as looking for humor or personality in Mr. Evans’s dour performance.
Armour-clanging, cloak-swishing tosh with okay battles, terrible dialogue and sadly little horror or heroism. Nowhere near as bad as I, Frankenstein – but what is?
Another addition to Universal’s Pictures Classic Monsters arsenal of crap (remember Van Helsing?), director Shore, in his feature debut, displays a fine sense of pacing but little else.
Dracula Untold is an action film whose story showcases love, loss, and sacrifice. If that sounds like it has been done before, it has; though everything is put together well, and first-time feature director Gary Shore demonstrates a surprisingly sure hand at the helm. I have been a fan of Luke Evans for years, and it was a joy to watch him shoulder the burden of this film with a brilliant effort. Supporting cast, music (Ramin Djawadi), and panoramic visuals counterbalance the short run-time and poetic licences taken with history (though seriously, we're talking about a guy who drinks blood to gain supernatural powers, and the most common complaint is that the movie is historically inaccurate? smh). 6/10 For Luke Evan's anchoring performance, and for being a satisfying action film that doesn't outstay its welcome.

This is a yet unseen retelling of the legend of "Vlad the Impaler". The movie tries to connect the legend with historical accuracy. Needless to say that it's not historically accurate, it's fantasy. The story is a bit clichéd and hurried, but it's still an entertaining fantasy film with some nice sceneries.

I feel like the sole reason this movie was made was so that Charles Dance could get free money. The script is hammy, the acting over the top, and the score is very cliched. The pacing of the story is absolutely all over the place, and the cinematography is nothing short of chaotic. This movie also committed the sin of sequel baiting at the end, when it's pretty clear to the audience that this is a one off action movie. I did get a couple of laughs from how ridiculous it was.
