Ed Wood is a strangely uncharismatic bio-pic from Burton and Depp. It has some nice photography, some decent performances and great period design but I felt myself drift off into boredom during the final third.

Johnny Depp is always good, but this movie isn't really into my tastes. (Well, there's cross-dressing, so that part was interesting. Who said Johnny doesn't look good in a dress?) As I do not know the real Ed Wood, either, it is hard to tell if this movie is a good portray of his career, or not. Yet, there are good moments in this movie as well, so it isn't complete waste of time!

A loving but patronizing tribute to moronic anti-genius Ed Wood. I'll agree with Burton that there are degrees of badness. Truly inspired badness is probably as rare as genius and to be recognized if not exactly recommended. But, Burton's movie is too warm and fuzzy toward its subject(as Amadeus)to reveal anything truly fascinating about his 'artistic' contribution.

Ed Wood impresses with a good cast (though it can get confusing with the many speaking parts it exhibits) but is a film that leads into nowhere. Obviously, Burton reveres Wood in some strange way, but he can't (or just doesn't) stop this biography of drifting off into a boring tale of a strange transvestite. A 80 minute flick would've told everything that needed to be told. If Ed Wood has a major failing, it's the lack of momentum. Wood's career had nowhere to go, and to some extent the film has the same problem. [23 September 1994, p.C34]
  3. A comedy of the ridiculous in which the ridiculous turns unexpectedly sublime.
