  • Summary: Kira (Stengade) is a young woman and mother of two who has recently been released from a two year stay at a mental institution. Arriving home in the care of her husband, Mads (Mikkelsen), this film tells the story of her difficult road to recovery and readjustment in the world outside psychiatric treatment, made more difficult by her discovery that Mads had an affair during her hospitalization. 1. 70
Until its pat, implausible conclusion, the film has the edgy nerve of a classic amour fou, charting a complex relationship with the sort of bumpy, unpredictable spirit that would do Cassavetes proud.
  2. 63
Stengarde gives an arresting performance as a mentally unstable woman.
  3. A disturbing, somewhat repellent portrait of a depressed middle-class woman's struggle to live comfortably in the world.
  4. 50
An unvarnished look at the emotional havoc that ensues when middle-class housewife Kira (Stine Stengade) returns home after a lengthy stay in a mental hospital, anchored by devastating performances.
  5. Never quite knows where it's going - which is especially frustrating, since it takes such a long and painful path to get there.
  6. Reviewed by: Eddie Cockrell
It often resembles John Cassavetes' "A Woman Under the Influence," but just as often devolves into a series of bravura acting exercises strung together by an increasingly sketchy narrative theme.
  7. 30
Another in a line of Dogme half-wits whose madness is posited as a state of tortured grace, the young wife in Kira's Reason is a woman well past the verge.
