Plenty of dramatic action, stunning imagery and an operatic score add weight to Escaflowne. It may not appeal to fans of traditional animation.
  2. 60
A smoothly structured, earth-toned and well-drawn Japanese anime.
  3. 60
Beautifully animated epic is never dull.

The film's life-affirming fable offers a richer metaphorical subtext than Vision's intricate coming-of-age soap opera. Unfortunately, clumsy dialogue, characterization, and exposition interfere with that subtext.
  5. 40
    Becomes blandly idealistic.
  6. The big-screen surround-sound effects are nice; too bad they're the only aspect of the film that's ready to rumble. And parents, be warned: There's an astonishing amount of bloodletting for a PG-13 film.

It's an awesome movie but the anime series on which the film is based is much better, simply because you lern so much more about the characters and their background. Expand

A good movie, I really liked the re-design of most characters. It has good battle sequences but never gets the quality, that the series has.

The action scenes and the romance were pretty good. But you can't take any thing very seriously. In the end there is something missing. There is too much of nothing, just small bits of everything. Expand
