Maris Curran had plenty of opportunities to insert a cheesy plot twist into “Five Nights in Maine,” her delicate drama about loss and its aftermath. Yet she stayed true to her intentions, and the result is a believable character study that may not draw crowds but certainly challenges its two lead actors.
Restraint is a good impulse when dealing with such a simple story of grief, and Curran’s approach does lead to good incidental visions of each character’s devastated state. Yet Five Nights in Maine is as frustrating as it is mannered; we never see these characters truly engaging the pain they clearly feel.
Five Nights In Maine’s grieving has a short-story quality, and many movies would do well to follow that model.
Five Nights gives us only about two nights worth of movie, and far less to chew on than the stingy-with-story director would have us believe.
The dreary postmortem drama Five Nights in Maine is barely kept afloat by the gravitas of dueling leads David Oyelowo and Dianne Wiest.
This lugubrious indie drama is affecting in parts but never gels into a satisfying whole.
Maris Curran never reconciles the film's impulse to interiority with its weakness for hothouse melodrama.
