Amazing movie, about being free, and a great lesson to anyone who does not respect the horse.

We didn't get it. Girl, unlikeable and lazy. Brother, likeable and lazy. Mother, out to lunch. Father, piece of wood. Horse, no appeal what so ever. Story line, non existent. Skip this one.

Another awe inspiring tale of how once again, your children as supposed to rebel against everything in the world so that they can become strong individuals and rule the world... But once again, we see all of the qualities needed for a strong individual in place only to be defiant, rebellious, and oh... did I mention lazy? Any ranch hand would roll their eyes and this and just agree that this is more what real life on the ranch is. Family that expects the hired hands to do their work, plus theirs and not gripe. First off, ya, smart, thanks to Mom and Dad's cash, which they sacrifice in order for her to get a decent education, is returned in appreciation by a doot da doo girl looking for nothing but a free ride and "understanding". But of course, we have all been there: We didn’t want to really do something, so instead of just telling people, we do it horribly. She gets to go home with her incomplete year, and starts right in without informing her parents. Then the first day back, she’s up bright and early to take a horse off on her 5k acre ranch. Which, she must know are going to be herding her families quarter horses that day. As she is riding, she stumbles upon a cougar/mountain lion and while running unconvincingly away from this threat, (Cougar would’ve pursued and ripped her jugular out) falls about 15 feet where the cougar is suddenly nowhere and she stumbles upon a CALM Mustang mare. Then after the awe, ta da! Here comes the cougar! Horse goes whinny and the cougar is "scared away". The hero in this story then ignores the fact that her horse is missing (with a cougar in the area) and proceeds to head home. Following this is all disaster.... The HERO continues not to write her essay and pays attention instead to what she wants and lets her father know every waking moment, which burdens him and his give in wife. His brother, who also seems to pick up her sisters slack, not only does her work, but encourages her to rebel and do whatever she wants. This sibling conspiring causes a herd of quarter horses to run off with the Mustang in a failed attempt to capture the Mustang which Dad cleans up. Then knowing that her education that her parents have sacrificed so strongly for her is in jeopardy, she shows how much she disrespects her parents by doing everything that her parents tell her not to. In time the mother is swayed by this whinny brat into seeing things in her light and turns also against her husband. After constant barrage and feeling against the odds of the family, the father decides to give up the ranch. Who wouldn't? Your while family is against you and the books can’t be balanced. most people would give. Maybe kids just see the "I stayed strong and won" I see, nothing more than a screaming kid in a supermarket crying until she/he gets what she wants no matter what. Which is what parents have had to deal with for decades, I feel sorry for the father, until her gave in and let her have the horse, of course, he was probably judging between the risks of the horse vs. her killing herself over her stupid acts. Parents, don’t watch it, don’t buy it, it’s another Disney version of HEY, im a kid, watch me thwart authority and come out smelling like roses. When in the end, they'll get older and no matter how rebellious they are, they will have to conform to society’s expectation of earning a buck to get by or be someone’s pimp punching bag or your local drug dealer. Don’t let them get influenced by this piece of crap. C&S Serious Sisters are the only ones that I have read that got the point of this movie for what it really was. We have enough problems with boomerang kids, failed to launch adults, and helicopter parents, let’s hope they have a brain cell left to see the garbage that’s supposed to be family entertainment. Oh and I know you women going gaa gaa over Faith "WHAT?!" McGraw's" husband are going to be all Rambo over this but think of it, IF Timmy was your hubby, would you want your kids to be like this? Think about it. Expand

Guess someone forgot to mention that two horses died in this movie huh? Whinny brat, conspiring brother, give in mother, Father stuck with ranch hands to clean up mess. Slap the brats and talk some sense to the spouse and get this movie going with a decent plot already!

This is a wholesome family movie with heart. If you liked the book or the old "My Friend Flicka" you will sure to enjoy this splendid remake. McGraw shows off more of the acting chops we glimpsed in "Friday Night Lights."

Excellent film with surprisingly powerful and polished performances by Alison Lohman and Tim McGraw. Sophisticated family film that simply proves again the incompetence of our nation's pretentious and chowder-headed "professional" critical pontificators.

This is not a family film, unless you want your family to learn that constant disobedience is the key to success.

Did I miss something? I went to see this because I remember so fondly the original "My Friend Flicka," and, of course, "Thunderhead." As I recall, when the rifle shot was heard in the distance--the intention being to put Flicka out of her misery--it was the mountain lion who was killed. A nice twist to the climax. Yet, in the new film I don't recall hearing anyone even ask about the shot and no mention of the big cat. Big dramatic opportunity missed here. Unless I fell asleep! Expand

Family film fare at as good a level as anything out there. It reminded me of the old Lassie TV shows of the 50's , but updated to a more honest level. Teenagers actually do argue with their parents sometimes and they don't always see eye-to-eye. They didn't allow for much of that in the 1950's TV Land, but it was happening then too. A film about Family, tradition, conflict and resolution. It's not Mission Impossible 3, thank god! Expand

  1. A modernized version of that great sentimental horse movie, 1943's "My Friend Flicka," and it comes with the shiny trappings, high professionalism and glamorous accessories you might expect...Something is missing though.
  2. An entertainingly ridiculous update of Mary O'Hara's 1941 children's novel, "My Friend Flicka."
  3. So those seeking a softer approach to the realities of both child- and animal-rearing should search elsewhere. The rest of us, meanwhile, are free to enjoy a well-made family drama pitched to young adults that's honest, tough and surprisingly engaging.
