The bulk of the film showcases some of the best direction of actors this year.

Maybe so much gorgeous but the best approach to the life and death of one of greatest icons of Mexican art; his troubled marriage with his mentor, Diego Rivera, and their influence in politics. Remarkable chemistry between Molina and Hayek. For know further, visit the houses- workshops in Mexico City.

This is quite an evocative film, depicting the titular characters somewhat turbulent love life and the situations she had to deal with, or found herself in.
There are a lot of brightly coloured settings and fashions depicted - its a bit of a colourful watch overall I suppose. An interesting biopic, showing how politics affected her life at different times. Yes, I'd say for Salma Hayek's performance, this is worth watching, though the ending did seem a little abrupt.

At its best when it forsakes earnest psychological exposition for magic realism, when, instead of trying to explain Kahlo's life, it conjures the moods and sensations that fed her art.
It's too bad that this long-awaited movie didn't go further than faithfully re-creating Kahlo's artwork and her studied look. Her passionate and tragically short life (she died at 47) is ideal Hollywood material, but the audience is left wanting a more in-depth portrait.
There's something oddly moving about the film purely as a love story between two people who were more alike than was good for them, yet somehow stuck it out. What we see in Frida is not Kahlo the painter, but Kahlo the love of Rivera's life, as he was of hers.
Skips from episode to episode without illuminating the essence of the woman or her art.
I doubt if the results would have satisfied Kahlo, whose originality in matters of life, art, and ideas was vastly more far-reaching.

Members of the Mexican press were appalled at the liberties taken in portraying Kahlo's traumatic life. The film shows Frida as a kind of superwoman, a far cry from the real artist who was a cripple, moreover it was also shot in a palette of colours that were bright, shrill and overwhelming, serving up stereotypical images of Mexico aimed at "gringo" tourists (source: Screen Daily). But if Julie Taymor had directed the whole biopic as the last quarter of an hour, the artistic level would have lived up to her protagonist.
