  • Summary: In this sequel to 2001's Friend, gang member Joon-seok is sentenced to 18 years in prison in connection to the death of Dong-soo, his childhood friend and a member of a different gang. Joon-seok meets Dong-soo’s son Sung-hoon in prison, but keeps his relationship with Dong-soo a secret. Joon-seok proposes to Sung-hoon to join forces with him when he’s out of prison, but the tables are turned suddenly when Sung-hoon finds out about the connection between Sung-hoon and his father.     In addition to the copious flashbacks, there is an overly generous heaping of styles on display.

    The most compelling thing about Friend 2 is its trifurcated plot, a structural gimmick borrowed from The Godfather Part II.

    Little parallelism or consequence can be gleaned from Kwak's narrative that crosscuts points between 1963 and 2010. Seeing as his surrogate in the first film is absent in the sequel, the shared cultural memory has also given way to genre exercise.
