  1. A handsome and fully imagined work of cautionary futuristic fiction.
  2. 88
This is one of the smartest and most provocative of science fiction films, a thriller with ideas.
  3. 80
The film's bleak future society is admittedly nothing new, and there's no lack of contrived or wooden moments, but Gattaca's parable of nature versus nurture is compelling enough to make it worth seeing for reasons besides art direction.
  4. Designer babies rule dystopia in stylish SF thriller filled with recycled plot devices.
  5. 60
Niccol's work is artful but self-important and thin.
  6. Although the movie has its moments -- particularly when our hero finds himself surrounded by a gimlet-eyed circle of futuristic detectives -- it's never really successful.
  7. 30
The moody images and Michael Nyman's score aren't enough to salvage this banal 1997 science fiction story.

Andrew Niccol has crafted a truly beautiful, intelligent and poetic film, accompanied by Michael Nyman's stunning score, it just gets better and better with age. Thurman, Hawke and Law are painfully beautiful and al together wonderfully compelling. Part sci-fi, murder mystery and film noir carefully rolled into one, at it's core lies a simple story about the redemptive power of love. Practically ignored by critics, cinema goers and film buffs upon it's release, one day it may receive the respect and adoration it deserves. Expand

Good presentation but no essence. Again science is blamed for society problems. And plot is very dull and predictable too.
