The movie -- even though it's based on real events -- seems unsatisfying and unconvincing.
There's very little plot, and director Mangold's attempts to make a connection between the social confusion of the '60s and Susanna's inner turmoil don't really work.
Mangold can't escape the fact that instead of someone in the throes of a genuine existential crisis, his star comes off as -- to paraphrase nurse Whoopi Goldberg -- a spoiled, lazy girl who's afraid to face life.
It's as if the book itself has been locked up and institutionalized, forced to conform to a system that all but obliterates its own unique personality.
Great performances, magnetic characters but with a super-hero like ending. It's overall a great movie, Jolie shows her absolute best and Wyonna's character is relatable and convincing, however they did deviate quite a bit from the original story, rendering kind of a fantastic ending, very socially normative for such a alternative-type story.
its not the brightest, nor is it revolutionary, but the well written and incredibly performed characters make a 2h movie pass in a blink of an eye. Being scripted, produced and played mostly by woman in the contra-cultural movement of the 60's, its a great showcase of a feminist story without being overly political, and i do love a good ****. Jolie is the absolute love of my live please marry me. definitely a must see.

McMurphy and Lisa Angelina Jolie's beautiful performance, which the film is based on, also won her an Oscar. And the very good performance of Winona Ryder, who worked hard for her role, is the strong point of the film. This psychological drama is based on the memoirs of Susanna Kaysen, who spent 18 months in a mental hospital between 1967 and 1968 after attempting suicide. This movie is kind of reminiscent of the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", especially the character "Lisa" is very similar to "McMurphy". And both films rely on these two characters.
