Goal! hits the back of the net and is an early candidate for the funnest movie of the summer.

Most sports films are also fish-out-of-water stories, and this one qualifies as both.

There's enough realism to keep a soccer buff like me happy, but the film is aimed at the young at heart, and I think they'll love it.

The film is capably acted and somewhat inspiring.

The cast, all around, is sterling. There's only one thing they don't need to bring back for the sequels, and that's the movie's appetite for every sports cliché there ever was.

The appealing young man's tribulations are predictable, his triumph inevitable; while he gets respect, we get another Rocky-style dose of emotional uplift, cloaked in the usual game-day clichés.

Handsomely shot and with a likable lead in Kuno Becker, it also suffers from a script so outrageously generic you could buy it at Costco.

I'm a massive fan of football so I loved this movie. Not exactly funny but still a great movie for football (or soccer) fans.

Kuno Becker scores big, but this movie was too long. Trimming 30 minutes off would solve a lot of the redundancy in the plot and get this moving.

Intelligent and emotional. Expand

A decent soccer flick. Although it's overflowing with sports-movie cliches and acting is average in most scenes, Goal! seems quite A decent soccer flick. Although it's overflowing with sports-movie cliches and acting is average in most scenes, Goal! seems quite authentic (save for Munez's practice kicks) and is genuinely fun to watch. Good to see another sports scene either than the typical American football or baseball fare. If you like soccer, you'll get a kick (bad pun I know) out of Goal!. Expand

Quite frankly one of the worst films ever. Every sports cliché ever? No thank you. Horrendous acting? No, I'm alright thanks. Quite frankly one of the worst films ever. Every sports cliché ever? No thank you. Horrendous acting? No, I'm alright thanks. Becker's character is bland to the point of distraction. The only good thing about this film is that is gives us another reason to laugh at good old David Beckham: his hilariously monotonal cameo, accompanied by, you guessed it, that winning smile. And come on, Newcastle United? Let's grow up here, they're not exactly a top club, are they? But everyone's gotta start somewhere... The script? Well... Generic doesn't quite cover it. 2 Marks for Beckham alone though! Expand
