When all is said and done, Goodbye to Language may simply be about Jean-Luc Godard exploring 3-D filmmaking, in the same way “The Shining” is really just about Stanley Kubrick wanting to fart around with a Steadicam. Which, honestly, is fine. Great artists use new tools to discover new vehicles for seeing, understanding, living. Be thankful we get to come along for the ride.
Always looking forward, Godard remains remarkably capable of seeing the world and thinking about filmmaking with clear eyes and fresh ideas.

The National Society of Film Critics recently cited Jean-Luc Godard's Goodbye to Language, the nuttiest lil' picture ever released in 3-D, as the best film of 2014, nosing out "Boyhood" by a single vote.
It’s nice to see this great filmmaker sculpting something that feels genuinely revelatory. That’s not to say that the 3-D Goodbye to Language is always an easy sit.
Godard's full length take on 3D is bold, brilliant and exactly what the format needed — a iconoclast taking it and making his own, and almost every time he frames a shot in three dimensions, from opening credits to the final moments, there's something attention-grabbing going on.
The best we can do, Goodbye to Language suggests, is to be as attuned, instinctive and spontaneous as beasts in a state of nature. Or maybe that’s not what the movie is saying at all. Godard leaves his enterprise adamantly open-ended, the better for viewers to supply their own metaphors, meanings and moral implications.
Dr. Godard drops and quotes more names than you’d find in a week’s worth of Page Six, but lots of luck figuring any of this out before dozing off. The good thing about Goodbye to Language is that you’ll wake up with no side effects, albeit your wallet will be $12 lighter.
Goodbye to Language is a bizarre trip, unlike anything I've ever seen. It reminds me of the film briefly previewed in the documentary 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' called 'Life Remote Control'. It is a series of dichotomous imagery and non-sequitor narrations that in absolutely no way cohede into something comprehensive on a logical, sensical, or realistic level. There is a goldmine of ambiguity and symbolism here. However, this is so dense, dense as a brick, that I find it will require MULTIPLE viewings to truly mesh into a thematic whole, and then even MORE viewings after that to finally come to a resolute storyline. I do have interest to see it again, but I don't know if it would be a fruitful usage of my time. Definitely a standout work of the art-house output in 2014. You guys want a challenging flick? Check this out. I'm still baffled.

Jean-Luc Godard's influence in cinema is indisputable, but the line between genius and madman is thin, just as the line between art and pretentious trash. In short, "Goodbye to Language" is an unintelligible mess of a film. The only innovative aspect was the 3D, which is the only thing why this is worth watching. At 72 minutes long, "Goodbye to Language" feels thrice its length.

In the end I felt as if 70 minutes of my life had been stolen... not to mention nauseous from the unbelievably bad 3D cinematography and editing. How could it have won an award? This film was a mishmash of ****, nudity, and too many overly long scenes of an ugly man sitting on a toilet. There was no discernible plot, no character development... The best thing about the film was the home movie of Godard's dog and even that had been spoiled by over saturated colors and poorly applied 3D. Apparently this movie is the swan song of an over-the- hill director and his cadre of sycophants that seem to believe if you make it painful enough to watch it must be "art".
