If Dolan is able to derive a certain comic tension from the simple threat of what could happen with these three in close quarters, he and his co-actors often spoil the mystery of the unsaid with the tells on their faces.

An example of style over substance. There's lots of slo-mo and jittery hand-held camera work, and references to the French New Wave (especially François Truffaut), but little depth.

The emotions veer from bawdy to sweet and then to obvious, though the film is stylish, and Dolan's artfulness helps when the movie loses focus.

However, this is the only one of Dolan's features that feels immature. A film about the young from the young. And Dolan is young. Only 22 when he made HEARTBEATS but still a step back after the amazing I KILLED MY MOTHER. Full Review »

Dolan is a good hipster, He offers a simple story deck with vintage and elegant confection. Props is good but it's not enough. Dolan is very young still. He needs to grow and he needs to be less hipster. "Heartbeats" is mixed but this is not bad. His next film, "Laurence Anyways" is better than "Les amours imaginaires" and "J'ai tué ma mère". I think that Dolan will be bette director in future. Full Review »
