  1. One of the few recent movies I have seen that plunged me into that rare, giddy state of pleasurable confusion, of not knowing what would happen next, which I associate with the reading and moviegoing experiences of my own childhood. But there is no reason that children should have a monopoly on this primal, wonderful experience.

It's great to see an action-adventure family film with heart as well as humor, whimsy alongside wisdom, and a compelling narrative.

Louis Sachar's compelling children's classic is about as Disney as Freddy Krueger. It's got murder, racism, facial disfigurement and killer lizards.
  4. A great family movie, with a terrifically empathetic young hero, strong messages about the powers of familial love and friendship, buried treasure and enough action to keep the little ones from getting bored.

Overall, there is a lot of flip-flopping between stories, sometimes jumping back and forth more frantically than an episode of "Seinfeld."
  6. A movie that feels a bit like digging a hole in the ground -- an exercise that may build character but doesn't seem to accomplish much else.

An ambitious undertaking, but not a successful one: It unfolds with the studied determination of a grade-school book report.

This is the magic of Disney and the kind of films they should be focusing on. Not only is it a great old story, brought to life on the big screen, but it's got one hell of a cast. The young stars in this movie turned out to be much better off working on a film like this, rather than some ridiculous singing and dancing nightmare, that would have tight cast them. Shia LaBeouf is great as a troubled kid sent away to a work camp, where they uncover a hidden secret. Surprisingly thou, it's newcomer Khleo Thomas who steals the show. His story and background are so sad and he plays it so well, that you just want to hug him every time he opens his mouth. Veterans John Voigt and Sigourney Weaver bring experience to the film and really give the kids a strong example to follow now and in the future. Overall, this is one of the best Disney movies I've ever seen, doing justice in bringing life to a great novel. I wish more of their films were like this! Expand

Featuring a cast with Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Shia LaBeouf, and the completely underrated Tim Blake-Nelson, Holes can go from bleak to intriguing to suspenseful in the blink of an eye. It's only in the end, when every plot hole is filled and every loose end is tied, you'll sit back and think 'wow, that was a great movie'. Expand

Holes is a really fun film. It has a great story that feels like a mystery even when it is not. Even if the setting feels dull at times it is a lot of fun. Expand

You have no idea how many times I have watched this film when it came out onto dvd/tv, Its easily my most watched film and that is saying something. Yes it does get a little stupid at times and the acting is average at best but the film just has "It", Its a cult classic imo. Expand

I have watched this movie well over 30 times and it still maintains it's value. Memorable scenes, Funny through out. It's a rather enjoyable film the whole family can watch. Expand

Even though the movie is so strange that it cannot really be classed as a children's film anymore, it does not really appeal to adults either. And even though there are some really great characters in the story performed by a wonderful cast and it is directed aptly, it did very little for me. Expand
