Chris Smith, codirector of the indie sleeper "American Movie," dreamed up this funny one-hour documentary, about five freaky homes and the people who live in them.
  2. 80
Smith delights in these offbeat personalities and their jerry-rigged accoutrements, but the real joy in the film comes from the happy interaction between the subjects and their creations.
  3. Smith profiles five extraordinary American homes, and because the owners seem fully aware of the uses and abuses of fame, it's a pleasure to enjoy their eccentricities.
  4. 75
The five subjects of Home Movie at least know exactly why they live where they do and as they do, and they do not require our permission or approval.
  5. There is something reassuring in seeing free-thinking individuals express their personalities so emphatically yet invitingly in the places they live.
  6. There's a lot of bad hair and incoherent, drug-addled remarks, but inside a minute we get the joke, and it isn't much.
