When viewing a movie as silly as 'Hot Rod,' one must sit back, relax, and alter one’s intellectual capacity to a like state – which is, in this case, a state dimwitted enough to endure brainless drivel that has somehow been mistaken for comedy. With a brief runtime of 88 minutes, this film was long past drawn-out and buried itself beneath a bundle of repetitive jokes – jokes that came at a minority and weren’t even funny in the first place. 'Hot Rod'’s base material is as superficial and irrelevant as 2004’s cult hit 'Napoleon Dynamite,' though it’s much more contrived and comes without any of the laughter. In fact, the movie’s blatant desperation to be compared to 'Napoleon Dynamite' is scornful and offensive, and left me pissed off, instead of just being annoyed. The movie, if one were compelled enough to call it such, poses a paltry story that puts self-proclaimed stuntman Rod Kimble before us, with the trifling intention of jumping fifteen buses (one more than his idol Evel Knievel jumped, so we’re told by Rod) and raising $50,000 dollars for his stepfather’s impending life-saving heart operation; all so that he can kick his stepfather’s ass, once recovered, and gain his respect… because in order to gain one’s respect, one must first kick their ass. Huh? Whatever. Each character is no more interesting than Rod’s stick-on mustache, and from the film’s opening joke to its ridiculous conclusion, each scene played like a nonsensical, and terribly unfunny, SNL skit – which, with the addition of an extra 85 minutes, is, essentially, what 'Hot Rod' strives to be. The film’s star, Andy Samberg, contributed an effort to the screen that observably exerted every last drip-drop of his comedic capabilities. Unfortunately – rather, realistically – his humorous talents are no more admirable than a five-year-old retelling his own exhausted joke that somewhere includes the innocently crude poop and pee-pee gags. And if that’s disappointing, pull a chair, hide your face in your hands, and brace yourself for the real blow: he is the film’s humor! To rescue them of their mortification, I’ll willingly omit the ghastliness of Samberg’s co-stars and their roles and leave the second third of The Lonely Island team, director Akiva Schaffer, to his non-existent talent as a director… or a comedian. Basically, every thing one could possibly do to further trample a crash-course comedy is perfectly portrayed here; and done so arrogantly, as though the film would be funnier that way. Trick yourself into believing that there’s even a single laugh in this heap, or treat yourself to another movie – any other movie. Expand

Far better than the over-rated Superbad, which was released around the same time. Hilariously awkward nerdy comedy.

great movie, it really connects with people who are smart enough to understand that the stupidity of the movie is intentional. in that sense, this is the funniest movie ive ever seen, and should be enjoyed by lots of people.

Its all silly and preposterous, but Andy Samberg does a great job in racking up the audience with the movie as well using his great, brazen performance. HE made "Hot Rod" such a funny movie.

I give a 0 for this website. Why is it that they say there are 27 user reviews and only 5 show and there is no link to see the rest. There is a link only to discuss this in the user forum. I have complained about this before and it never was fixed. Of course, we see EVERY single critic review which to me is useless. I want to hear from normal people who go to the movies just to have fun. [Ed: Hey Jack, people can vote without leaving a comment. (Light bulb!)] Expand

I got to see a sneak peek June 27th and I can say that I wasn't really excited about seeing this film after seeing the preview. This is a comedy classic and personally I thought it was the funniest film that I've ever seen. Its this years Napoleon Dynamite. Go see it as soon as it comes out and tell your friends/spread the word

I couldn't stop laughing, I'm ashamed to say. The entire movie is about as shallow as the online comedic shorts that made Samberg and his pose famous before SNL. I heard that the role was originally meant for Will Ferrell, and it shows. For some reason I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching a half baked Ferrell comedy. I can only sum the movie up as Elf meets Napoleon Dynamite and ask myself what kind of drugs they were on when they made this movie. Expand

The humour is akin to what you and your friends talk about at school or work. It's often random and stupid but you laugh out loud anyway and repeat the quotes over and over again. HIghly enjoyable for anyone who is a fan of stupid humour.

This movie is darn right entertaining. No, it's not going to win any awards, but that's not what it's set out to do, it's there to make you laugh, and that's just what it does...the ENTIRE time! an y movie that can make you laugh for days after is well worth the overpriced movie ticket. Overall this was a silly weird movie that I adored. Even though this had very little hype, I believe this is one of the best Comedies of the year!

I was fortunate enough to have a friend that got us tickets to an advanced screening of Hot Rod. We went into the movie with exceptionally low expectations and were still disappointed. This movie attempts to carry a slapstick, goofball humor and fails miserably. This is by far the worst film i have ever had to sit through. Even though i did not have to pay for the movie, i still walked out of the theatre feeling ripped off. Expand

Great, hilarious movie! It is not a slapstick, the humor lies in the completely randomness that is SNL humor, and if you don't like it go watch Fox News. Only kicking back and listening to NOFX gives me more pleasure than this laugh-out-loud comedy. Just look at the plot. Rod has to save his stepdad's life so he can beat him up. I've seen Suberbad it is good, but not Hot Rod good.

Anyone who thinks the humor in this movie lies in the stunts COMPLETELY missed the point of this movie. The humor is the in the tangential delivery, in the randomness, in the clever, distinct, and odd mannerisms and perspectives of the characters. The style is reminiscent of the show Family Guy. Andy Samberg falling isn't what is meant to be funny. Lines like, "I'm pumped! I9;ve been drinking green tea all day!" are the true hilarity of the film. I guess you just have to have a certain sense of humor to appreciate it. I thought it was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a loooong time, and if Superbad hasn't come out the same weekend, I think Hot Rod would be getting the attention and acclaim it deserves. Awesome movie. Expand

I enjoyed this movie and I know I will enjoy it even more the second time around. The humor is not your typical style of say Wedding Crashers or Talladega Nights but more like Napoleon Dynamite or Jay & Silent Bob. There is no incredible scenery or half naked women, etc. This movie has a very small town, small budget feel but is very funny in dry humor sort of way. I remember seeing Napoleon Dynamite the first time and thinking it was very odd but It was funnier the second time around, Hot Rod was much funnier and I think will be even better the second time. A Comedy Masterpiece? Of course not. A Cult Comedy Masterpiece? I'd say so. Yes, the film is reliant on Absurdist and odd humor. But behind what many may find extreme stupidity, I find a subtle sense of genius. All the little things pull together to make this comedy among my favorites. Andy Samberg's energetic performance, the entirely Europe soundtrack despite there not being a clear time setting, and, what I would say is the best climax of all time, the riot scene. Accenting the film is Danny McBride's performance, while not fine acting, is funny during every line. The Cast, Direction, makes what critics may call "A Poor Attempt at an Extended Digital Short" what I call "A Brilliant, Misunderstood Brilliant Comedy" Expand

This is a film that has only gotten better with time. The difficulty for many absurdist comedies (Wet Hot American Summer, Anchorman, etc.) is that they are designed to find purchase with viewers' tastes over repeat viewings, with clever asides and small jokes packed within the larger bit which may at first appear overly broad and simplistic, prompting some people to call a film with a potentially elaborate wit "stupid." Critics don't have the benefit of seeing a film multiple times prior to a review, and thus often absurdist films are lumped into categories with other twee indie comedies and ignored. It's true that absurdism is an acquired taste, and there are many people who don't grasp the rhythm of these films. But for those who can enjoy a scripted comedy with a sense of the wildly absurd and slightly parodic, "Hot Rod" is a must-see, and one of the most underappreciated comedies of 2007. While it starts with a bang, it takes a little bit for the movie to switch into full gear. Having Ian McShane is always a smart casting choice for any film, and he shows here that he can wield comedy along with his usual gravitas. Samberg, meanwhile, is a terrific doofus, as expected, and fans of his web and TV antics will love what he does here. But for the real breakout star? It's a three-way tie: Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, and Danny McBride shine throughout the film as Samberg's plucky crew, and provide many of the great background laughs that will keep viewers coming back again and again (Hader's facial expressions, in particular, create a film reel's worth of hilarity when you least expect them). Isla Fisher and Will Arnett also play some great bit parts, though nothing too outside-the-box for either of their histories. Combine all of this with a soundtrack so 80s cheese-tastic it drips through the speakers, and "Hot Rod" is absolutely worth your time. It's not for everyone, but as a fan of slapstick and absurdism, this film had me rolling from start to ridiculous finish. Expand

For reasons unknown I had never heard of nor seen this movie until last weekend. The story and comedy are simple, its not as indy as Napoleon Dynamite and doesnt have the greatest story ever for a low budget movie, at times its pretty dumb however there are some laughs in some scenes, particularly in its dialog and its quotable script. I wished the movie hadnt taken the easy route of a standard underdog story with a predictable happy ending but the movie does have its moments, it does have some quotable lines and I recommend for fans of random comedy. It's filled with cheap laughs and slapstick humor, but for the most part it works. It will never be known as a great comedy, but if you are looking for a quick comedy fix I venture to say this one will satisfy most viewers.
