• Starring: Fairuza Balk, Jeremy Strong, Peter Bogdanovich
  • Summary: At the edge of the continent and on the margins of society is a region of California known to some as "The Lost Coast." It is there, in Humboldt County, that Peter Hadley– a promising yet disillusioned medical student failed by his professor – stumbles upon a remote community of counterculture marijuana farmers and a warmly embracing, yet eccentric family. Humboldt County is a story of the human soul in search of happiness, and the unexpected places we can sometimes call home. (Magnolia) Expand

Just the type of small film that, if given a chance to be seen by audiences, could become somewhat of a hit for grownups ala "Sideways" or "The Squid and the Whale."

Its low-key charms are considerable enough to engage venturesome ticketbuyers.

The entire script, which boils down to a hopelessly embarrassing lesson about "this beautiful place that can make people live again," seems to have been written within arm's reach of a bong.

I saw this film 4 times. The script, directing, photography and acting, made me feel as if I were there in Humboldt County....at times, I wished I was there! Expand

Humboldt County is fantastic. It's sensitive, complex and is one of the best films I've seen in many years. It doesn't chose sides, instead it allows the audience to draw their own conclusions and it trusts its audience is savvy enough to do it. The performances are really surprising, especially if you're used to seeing Brad Dourif as Wormtongue. I really enjoy the ambiguous ending as well, since you're not really sure where the main character is headed. It feels very 70's and at the same time manages to be fresh and unexpected. Also, I was struck by the natural surroundings of the place and the score really supports this quiet beauty. For newcomer filmmakers, it looks like these guys have been doing this for quite a while. If you want something beautiful and paradoxical, go see this film! Expand

Painful to watch. Trite, predictable, wooden acting, amateurish filmmaking. My friend and I sat through the whole thing, hoping it would get better. It never did. Expand
