As far as sports movies set in Philidelphia go, this one is the best, but I don't see it winning the Best Picture Oscar over Dreamgirls and Flags of our Fathers the way Rocky stole it from Network and All The Presidents Men in 1976. Howecer, it is better than Rocky and it's a worth while end of summer movie to see as a warm up for all the coming Sundays you'll be at home watching NFL on television. Mark Wahlberg has become a bankable actor over the years and Invincible is the obligatory Disney family film everyone has to do in Hollywood, now he needs to work with Paul Thomas Anderson or Spike Jonze again. I thought this movie was great! I really felt for Vince, he loses the whole 9 yards and takes all the negativity and uses it as a motivator. I thought the depiction of training camp was all too real to life. I played college football, and this movie gave me two-a-day flashbacks. The throwing up before games part made me smile, a lot of people do not know that happens before game. Anyway, Great movie! Bravo! Expand

Stand up and cheer is the right motto for this exceptionally well made and well acted true story about one of football's greats Vince Papale, the film starts out relatively slow and then kicks into 1st gear when Vince decides to do what he always wanted to do forever play football for his home team. Now a 30 year old bar tender is about to become the Eagle's most unlikely rookie. Invincible is a courageous movie that show's you no matter what you do or how old you are you can make a difference in whatever you do. I hope my review helps. Expand

This theoretically true-to-life-except-for-the-facts saga about Vince Papale, who became a gridiron hero when the perpetually losing Philadelphia Eagles, in the managerial equivalent of a Hail Mary pass, conducted man-in-the-street tryouts, is harmless and inoffensive, I guess...but I think I would've preferred to see the gritty independent feature about Papale's ex-wife, 20 years later, subsisting on ramen noodles and passed out on cheap vodka night after night while daily berating herself because she coulda been the wife of a football star but blew it by walking out on him right before he went out for the team. Maybe that's because, as interesting and inspiring as these stories undoubtedly are, Disney invariably (as they did with Remember the Titans, The Rookie and Glory Road) sands down, smooths over and chops off the quirks and rough edges until these movies are indistinguishable from mildly pleasant, but highly forgettable made-for-TV product (or from each other). (Ever notice how these flicks are always released during times when there's very little actual box-office competition so they can claim an easy Number One? Imagine the tantrums, phone-throwing and mass desk-cleanings-out that would occur in Disney's front office if someone accidentally scheduled one of these against the latest crappy 1970s horror remake in ITS debut week!) A really exuberant, larger-than-life central performance like Samuel L. Jackson's in Coach Carter (significantly NOT from Disney) would make all the difference in the world, but here we get a merely competent one from Mark Wahlberg as Papale...and an ineffective one from Greg Kinnear as Coach Dick Vermile, whose motivational speeches here are scarcely more inspiring than the ones Kinnear's fictional character failed to sell in Little Miss Sunshine. Invincible's most notable characteristic is its wildly theatrical set design, art direction and cinematography; the movie may be set in the 70s but it screams 1930s Eugene O'Neill/ Clifford Odets all the way. I grew up in Baltimore, not too far away from this movie's setting, and I could swear that my parents allowed us to have actual colors in our household on holidays and special occasions; this is the BROWNEST-looking movie since this year's earlier Johnny Depp period piece The Libertine, and that one was SUPPOSED to be dark and depressing. Otherwise, fictional competitive sagas like Rocky, Breaking Away, The Karate Kid and the recent Akeelah and the Bee outscore their real-life counterparts once again: Invincible, like Remember, Rookie and Road, invariably gets faint praise from reviewers who describe these movies with phrases like "hokey but irresistable". Well, they've got it half right, anyway. Expand

"Glory Road" was every bit the by-the-numbers inspirational story that "Invincible" is, but cliches are meant to be transcended. Good actors are the elixir that transforms formula writing into formula writing that is forgivable. Mark Wahlberg is Vince Papali. Greg Kinnear is Dick Vemeil. Perhaps the most important performance is given by Elizabeth Banks since romantic interludes involving the main character are usually painful timekillers. She takes a nothing role and makes it special, suggesting an ability to be a poor woman's Rachel McAdams. True, the final football game is too long, therefore exposing the screenwriting nightmare of profiling a special teams player(like a sumo match, their time on the playing surface is over in a flash). But "Invincible" gets a lot of little things right, in particular, the effect that Papali's success has on his old haunts. They're happy. We're happy. Like the documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys", "Invincible" makes you marvel at the seventies. Open tryouts for a professional sports franchise? Incredible. Yuta Tabuse, a point guard from Japan who played for the Phoenix Suns two years ago is the only sports story that remotely resembles Papali's. Expand

It's an ABC 30 minute special turned into a hour and half movie. It was a good story, but i don't think it was worth 9$ to go see in theaters.

A high school football team attended the same showing we attended. You could have heard a pin drop during the movie. I recommend it highly. In the same league as Rudy or Hoosiers.

A thoroughly enjoyable film for everyone, kids and adults, fans and non-fans. It is a story of a guy who doesn't really have a dream because he doesn't think he'll ever be good enough, but is pushed by his friends and his inner demons to the point where he starts to believe. I've never been a Wahlberg fan, but this film has made me change my mind about him. Although he looks nothing like the real Papale, his acting captures the heart and soul of this teacher-turned-pro. And Kinnear is great, as usual. You don't have to be an Iggles fan to love this one. Expand

Excellent movie! I like the honesty that shows how difficult it is to make on a NFL roster. It also delivers that blue collar feel for the hard nose football fan. I really felt that neighborhood unity that was displayed throughout the flick. It is a must see for any football fan!

Wow, Mark B. on the scout team really has to lighten up. When you watch a movie like this, you know what you are going to get, and for what it is, it is very good. Quit projecting your issues with other movies on this one. If you are not completely jaded and cynical, you can actually enjoy this movie. My one complaint is that Vince is actually a lot more charismatic in real life than the Mark Wahlberg vesion. Watch the featurette in the DVD about the real Vince Pampale and you can tell that this guy has a transcendent lust for life and he relished every minute of his opportunity to be an Iggle. Mark Wahlberg kinda scowls his way through this movie, and it woulda been nice to have a charcater actually enjoy the journey a little bit while it is happening instead of being the kinda "ah shucks, this really isn't going to work out" character that we see. Still though, if you like the feel-good Remember the Titans kinda movies. This one is extremely enjoyable and considerably less corny than Titans. Expand

This movie has decent acting, casting, cinematography, and accurately recreates the feel of the mid-70's. Unfortunately, all that can’t save a cliche infected script with some comically artificial dialog. This is a made for ESPN script all the way. Someone was counting on the fact that the homeboys are too downhome to realize it doesn't sound a thing like them. Based on some of the reviews, I say that was a safe bet. Expand

This movie was never going to be some Oscar winning, incredibly original and innovative piece of art but it is certainly entertaining. Not being into American Football i didn't know much about the character but saw a trailer and thought it was worth a watch. It certainly was, Wharlberg played the role well and it was just well made overall. Its true the plot has been done before, man has dream, over comes obstacles, theres a girl, doubts self then gets there in the end...but who doesn't love a story where the underdog wins? To those of you who claim bits are stolen from Rocky...Rocky is fiction, this is based on reality, not all that concretely but its accurate enough. To summarise, good film, good feel good factor, certainly one of the better ones in the genre. Expand

I had really high expectations for this movie. When I saw the reviews some people gave this movie, I just thought they didn't understand football movies and what it means to be on a team. I noticed that the movie tried to play off of the rocky theme, of an underdog from philadelphia who gets his dream shot and comes through in the end. Invincable really tries to emulate the first rocky movie, but it just doesn't grab you and get you emotionally envolved as that movie, or any of the other football movies in the past did. I felt like there was alot of the story missing, and they cut it short with no real resolution at the end. When I watch a movie about football I want it to be about football. I know that Vince Papale had personal problems in his life, but the director failed to truely make me feel the emotion that went along with it. This movie stands as the worst football/underdog movie ever made in my book. I think Walt Disney would turn over in his grave if he found out about this movie having his name on it... And his brain would thaw, and turn over as well! Expand

I am sorry for all those who didn't like the movie, but I absolutely loved it. I am not even a football fan. But I felt it showed all the things he must of felt and gone through. It even gave me the strength to go on- And even today-Vince seems down to earth and full of spirit . Iam sure you parents are so proud of you and your family- I absolutely loved the film and even though it does resemble the Rocky films. Perhaps Stallone got the idea from The Vince Papali Story, NOT the other way around as one of your readers suggest. Thanks Vince for sharing your life with the rest of us. Expand

Sure, the unlikely ascendance of 30-year-old Vince Papale from working-class suds-pumper to Philadelphia Eagles benchwarmer is a victory for the little guy, but it's still more of a personal victory, and that's what makes it touching.
