Fellini foolishly thought he could make an entire movie by weaving together his fantasies and dreams. The resulting fabric is threadbare in many parts. To be sure, there are some awesome surrealistic spectacles that surpass those in 8 1/2; Fellini foolishly thought he could make an entire movie by weaving together his fantasies and dreams. The resulting fabric is threadbare in many parts. To be sure, there are some awesome surrealistic spectacles that surpass those in 8 1/2; however, like the last 2/3 of Kurosawa's Ran, there's no central gravity to hold them together and charge them with emotional meaning. Fellini, by then an artistic megalomaniac, wasn't exactly primed to understand the feminine psyche. Still, one of the most exuberant and unabashedly celebratory works of mid 60s, when the Film Generation was coming into its own, and it seemed like cinema, as total art, was limitless as the expanding universe.
