My favorite movie! Ellen Page is the only person who could have done this part. The movie shows how fun life can be, while blending that with the up and down rollercoaster of teenage life. I cried when she had the baby because I knewthat even though the baby was not going to be brought up by Juno, that she was still eternally, and forever the baby's mother

This is a great movie. Amazing performances by Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons & Jennifer Garner. I'm surprised to see some of the hate in the User Comments. Can you bitter schmucks actually gave this movie a 2? I'd love to see what Michael B., Sara E. & Aaron S. think is an 8. Or a 5. Those are three metacritic readers that rate good movies lower to get their twisted kicks... Expand

A terrible, horrible, and COMPLETELY over rated comedy. It was an hour and a half of hipster bollocks being shoved down my throat. There was ONE part that made me laugh. The other 89 minutes or so I was looking for something to shove into my ear drums to stop the relentless hipster soundtrack. UGH.

I don't think that the movie is so bad... you can sit there and just let everything go. but by no means is it the most brilliant show ever. and yes the script can get a little annoying!! however Genny T there is no need to call people who don't like it uneducated... i have a brilliant education and the movie only scored a 6 for me so.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. hmm this movie is probably only interesting to young-older teens. not funny at all! I could see that they tried to be funny but it was more of like a goofy/silly type thing that immature ppl would find funny. the only part i found interesting was the drama between the adopting couple. other than that... eh. I HATE the sarcasm in the movie. I was like HELLO theres a 16 year old girl thats pregnant! does anybody care? its like they make it seem "OK"! the parents didnt seem to be too worried or shocked and the girl seemed like she could care less. If i was her parent i'd be PISSED at the fact that my daughter was having sex at that age knowing the consequences. these parents seem just as irresponsible as their kid. This is NOT the message that we should be sending to teens. and i actually believe the only smart thing this girl did was give the baby up for adoption. that comment the doc said when she was giving the ulrasound saying the teen mother shouldnt raise her baby cause she'd be in a poisonous environment was actually something i'd agree with. plus teens dont know how great it is to have their freedom until they r responsible for the life of a child. Juno - the bottomline Message to filmmakers: Don't put anything on screen that you don't have the slightest clue about! Do your homework and research first. Did you notice anything while watching this film? 1.: The film, as so many others, once more reinforces outdated mis-information about childbirth despite very contrary research findings, reaching a huge audience and in doing so contributing to bad birth decisions - which unfortunately too many parents make already these days on a routine basis. Take an hour and do a Google search to find out why - and don't only read the first two pages that come up - or just believe the nonsense this and other films dump into your brain, but don't say later you couldn't know any better. Your choice. "Birth in hospital is normal and best." WRONG. Fact: For healthy mothers with normal pregnancies, birth in hospital is more dangerous than at home. "An epidural is normal and necessary." WRONG. Fact: Epidurals routinely cause serious side effects on mother and baby with not uncommonly terrible health impacts that last for years or a lifetime. They also slow down the birth process, often making further medical interventions necessary that wouldn't have been necessary without an epidural. "Birth is given lying on your back." WRONG. Fact: Lying on your back makes the whole birth process significantly slower, harder, and more painful, increases the risk of birth injuries and also the likeliness of further medical intervention like instrumental birth, medical induction / speed up, and caesarean section. Did you notice any of these things when you saw the film? No? That's how seriously you have already been manipulated throughout your life into thinking that all this is "normal" and "right". 2.: The only responsible solution for teenage pregnancy is giving the child up for adoption. Particularly in the film's setting, this is sheer nonsense. There is absolutely no reason why a sixteen year old mother can not responsibly raise her child if she has the intelligence of Juno as well as the sound financial AND moral support of her parents - be it with or without the father of the baby. Simply assuming that this is not possible is disregarding all those young mothers - and also fathers - who do a really great job raising their children, with the help of relatives and friends, and often provide a much better environment for their children to grow up than the typical neurotic hung-up and emotionally immature couples that seems to be the norm in many "normal" families these days. Bottomline: An interesting film concept, taken into an unreflected, outdated stone age direction, and in doing so, unfortunately ruined. Additionally the film sabotages the efforts of all those who work hard to make objective birth information a part of public knowledge, and adds to the misinformation and manipulation that parents-to-be are bombarded by already. Don't believe a single source of information - DO YOUR HOMEWORK and find out for yourself. Thanks for thinking. Your baby will love you for it! Expand

This was the type of film that kicks off to a nice start with original soundtrack and pop lingo(not to mension an appearance from Rainn Wilson), but as the story unravels and finally makes it's way to conclusions, you find yourself wondering just how much effort was put into the ending. Besides that, I honestly thought this was a wholesome film

Oh, and this film really isn;t one of those films taht requires you to "have an education", or however one of the reviewers tried to put it in order to say people who didn't like this movie were just stupid. The dialogue wasn't really that witty, and the fact that middle schoolers understood it all means it's really not that smart as some ignorant defenders are trying to claim. But to another reviewer: of course plenty of teenagers are actually this quickly-witted. Do you only hang out with stupid high schoolers? But if you want a classic comedy that still holds up today which REALLY requires you to be alert because of the rapid-fire humor, please turn your attention to Aiplane!, the greatest classic spoof of our time (which also opened the gates for all spoofs following it.) ah, the critics... what a waste of space they are... Peter Travers tells us (rolling stone) what a special kick it is to discover a new star.... !!!?? Huh ? Ellen Page you say? You mean the star who agve an almost academy award-winning level performance years earlier in Hard Candy? An already cult, popular and highly-praised film....? Wow Peter.... tell me this, are you not ashamed at the standard of your reviews? I would be if I was saying the BS you did. Don't get me started on the critic who gave No Country FOM a 50 and made it receive a lesser overall score than There Will Be Blood, which is inferior in almost every regard to NCFOM. Fact. Expand

I believed that this file is the best i have seen. the acting is flawless. Diablo Cody is an excellent writed and that is probably the reason this film won best original screenplay at the 2007 oscars. Ellen Page is one of the if not best actress of my generation. Her creation of juno is perfect right down to her facial expressions and her walk. i have seen this movie about 10 times and haven't gotten tires of it. Just abut every aspect of this film whether it be directing acting, writing, or editing is just perfect. i strongly this movie should have won best picture and best actress at the oscars because of such a relatively low budget of 6 milliion it is better than all of the other big budget films like The Dark Knight. Overall it was a grat film that pretty much everybody should watch at least once. Expand

I saw Juno at the St. Louis International Film Festival in the middle of November. This film was one of the funniest films of the year. It was also one of the most original films of the year. Juno uses the wit of the actors along with great writing and music to move the story. Unlike other comedies that rely on crude humor to make you laugh.

All the hype around Diablo Cody and this movie had me dying to see it. First day - I'm there. Wow. What a disappointment. It is just dreadful. The characters all sound the same, none of it is the least bit convincing (not even as a funhouse mirror reflection of reality) and the humor has no snap. Terrible acting and soundtrack. It's just wall to wall bad. I can only assume all the glowing reviews are a byproduct of the feel-good-girl-power-breakout-screenwriter bandwagon. It happens sometimes. Remember how Nia Vardalos was going to take over Hollywood? Sorry... but the emperess has no clothes. Which kind of makes sense... Cody used to be a stripper. Maybe she shouldn't quit her night job. Superbly acted with rapid-fire dialogue that is both witty and endearing. Juno breaks from the cliched high school comedies that focus on cliques and naivete. It is sweet without being unbelievable and funny without being crude. Probably the best comedy of the year, possibly the best film of the year.

At their first meeting, the 16-year-old title character corrects the would-be adoptive father of her illegitimate child that her namesake is not the city in Alaska but rather the Roman Queen of the Gods and once you see this movie, you'll likely realize that the name Juno could not be more appropriate, nay, perfect. Initially wearing something non-descript, the audience has to observe her mannerisms and hear her cant to begin to develop an understanding of who she is. And the screenwriter, Diablo Cody, director, Jason Reitman, and lead actress, Ellen Page, do an amazing job of showing this through her brusque, mannish, sarcastic, juvenile-idiom-laden speech, her resolute gait, and her brutally-honest and witty utterances. Juno, while--not coincidentally--being the goddess of motherhood, is also infamously the bitchiest of the gods. One must take into account, however, that she always had reason to be filled with hatred or jealousy; her husband was constantly philandering with mortals of both sexes. Juno, also representing monogamy in marriage, is justified in her rage and her firm expression of her feelings is respectable rather than hysterical (and by the way, the monogamy/infidelity issue plays a key role in the film). As I was watching a preview screening at the Lagoon theater on Nov. 28, it was difficult for me to rid myself of the notion that I wasn't watching the goddess Juno herself, except here mortal, adolescent, and Midwestern. In this film as in reality, the company that every character holds describes his or her personality in a more profound way than their characters in isolation and they become exponentially more complex as they interact. The adoptive couple, the Lorings, initially come off as two-dimensional, but as we discover that Mark (Jason Bateman)--instead of being the nesting, Bed-Bath-and-Beyond-type like his wife Vanessa (Jennifer Garner)--is rather is an aging, frustrated, sellout of an ex-hipster and one can take this to illustrate a whole history to their relationship. Juno springs from her lower-middle class, disciplining yet disaffected parents (J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney) as logically as the theory of gravity. And the fact that Juno, the self-described goth librarian, is best friends with Leah (Olivia Thirlby), an animated, cheerleader-type ginger who lusts after her English teacher describes both girls better than either one alone; the inter-clique connection happens when both people mutually see something unique beneath the surface. Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), Juno's baby-daddy, is the headbanded track star (maybe he's working off the baby fat he appears to still have) that occasionally reveals passions his meekness would otherwise belie. You see what they saw in each other, as in the movie's Moldy Peaches theme song "Anyone Else But You". I confess myself to be blown away at having learned that seemingly the most of the mother-loving soundtrack owes its brilliance to the actress who plays Juno, Ellen Page. Reitman asked her what she thought her character listened to and she said, "The Moldy Peaches," which isn't quite the 70's-era rock the character explicitly says she listens to, but lends its charmingly puerile tones and jaded/sentimental lyrics perfectly to the film's general milieu (especially with the solo music of band-member Kimya Dawson). The music immediately distinguishes the movie as one targeted at young people of the artistic temperament, but never self-consciously or crudely, eg. Garden State. The opening credits, animated by Shadowplay studios, which also did the one for "Thank You For Smoking", seemed somewhat incongruous to the rest of the film. The cartoon outline of Juno walking around the squiggly, pastel neighborhood drinking a gallon jug of "Sunny-D" suggests that the rest of the movie will be equally cartoonish and the main character a potentially-mentally-challenged outsider. Especially paired with the first scene where Rainn Wilson plays a 7-11 clerk that harasses Juno about the pregnancy tests she continues to buy and fail, the opening credits prepare you for a movie like Napoleonette Dynamite. Reitman, when asked about the similarities, said that unlike Napoleon Dynamite, Juno isn't set in an alternate universe, but rather firmly in reality. As the movie develops, he is proven correct because the characters quickly stop acting like quippy caricatures. That's not to say it isn't funny. In fact, it is much funnier than Dynamite. The frequency and intensity of the jokes is blistering. Don't zone out for a minute or else you'll miss jokes that are hidden in the background or muttered under someone's breath. Almost as quickly the mood will change from hilarious to heartbreaking and, although jarring, it's also pleasantly sobering. The story is as well-constructed and unpredictable as one could ever desire. In the end, there will be tears guaranteed for the saps among us and those willing to make themselves vulnerable to images and sounds. In the end, you will feel that the older characters will find a newer understanding of themselves and that the younger characters will discover their identities for the first time. You will be convinced that they will grow into the people you want to be friends with. In the end, you will feel the long-lost reverence for the miracle of motherhood that makes mother goddesses of any name smile. Read my blog at: violaceleste.blogspot.com Expand

All the grumps and naysayers on here are of course right... the dialog is far too sharp, witty, and sarcastic to have any pretensions of realism. And yes, the movie flirts with being precious at times (in a decidedly irreverent way) . When a movie is this funny though, who cares? Sometimes you have to just stop with the mental masturbation and let yourself enjoy a movie. If you're a Belle and Sebastian fan, you'll love this film. Expand

I've never posted to Metacritic before, but I felt compelled to given the unanimous praise this is receiving. I was excited about seeing it based on the reviews, but I did not like Juno at all. In fact, for about the first hour, it looked like it was going to be downright awful. Jason Reitman apes Todd Solondz, Judd Apatow, and Wes Anderson SO hard, without adding a damn thing and subtracting a lot. He seems out to prove that he is truly his father's son. Far worse is Diablo Cody's script. The pop-culture name-checking, the sarcastic heroine a la Thora Birch in Ghost World, the unfunny use of words like "beef swords" (which killed with our audience by the way), the quirky indie constructs (the stepmom obsessed with dogs, the rock-and-roller who now composes commercial jingles)... yuck. It all feels very familiar but nowhere near as good as you've seen it done before. It is a terrible film with one single asset: Michael Cera. Go see The Savages instead, a far better film made by and for intelligent adults. Expand

'Juno', it seemed to me after seeing it in Toronto, is like the Urban Outfitters of indie film: it's overpriced, overhyped, rife with a host of prepackaged 'quirk' (a half-sister named Liberty Bell was the anvil that broke the camel's back) and gratingly twee cues. And like it's commercial counterpart, while it tries so hard to emulate the more original and capable efforts in its genre, it hits so very off-center. But with Fox Searchlight's coffers wide open in promotion for the flick, I fear we may yet be subject to more of Ms. Cody's and Mr. Reitman's product. And I can't say I'm happy (at all) about that. wildly overrated. sure it's amusing, but it's not in the same league as Lil Miss Sunshine or Sideways. It is too smug and too many characters share the same wise-mouth dialog, both 16 year-old girls, the drug store clerk, both parents... not until bateman and Garner come along do we get characters who aren't wise-mouth. the yuppie couple are flat caricatures. She wants a baby, period. He's afraid to lose his youth, period. every scene with them makes that point. Ellen Page is superb, as are the actors who play her parents. Ultimately, when the emotional payoff was supposed to land at the end i felt it missed. Juno's relationship with her boyfriend character was not sufficiently developed for me to care. Expand

The funny thing about "Juno" is that the too-cool-for-school hipsters that it appears to be designed for are hating on it for being too clever and precious, while the over-the-hill established film critics absolutely adore it for the very same reasons. Well, I must be getting old, because I thought it was wonderful. Smart, funny, very well crafted and expertly acted. Reitman's ability to squeeze so many layers into 90 minutes reminds me of Woody Allen at his best. There isn't a single wasted frame. Expand

It's all like, trying to be indie, but it's like totally not. I loved Arrested Development until it became hip to love Arrested Development at which point I started hating it, and then decided I would hate any movie the actors touch. It follows that I would totally hate this movie then because there's two (2!) of them in it. It's totally overhyped even though it hasn't really been advertised. Juno isn't bad, just grossly overrated. The entire first half of the film is ludicrous -- hot-screenwriter-of-the-moment Diablo Cody virtually screaming to the audience, "Look, Hollywood, I can write glib hyper-witticisms as well as anybody!" Sitcom-y and self-conscious screenwriting at its absolute worst. The movie actually improved quite a bit in the second half when it got a little more serious and earnest, and the screenplay finally turns down the relentless "snappy" one-liners a bit. I couldn't stand the smarmy, too-cool-for-the-room Juno character throughout, but there are some good supporting bits by the likes of Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner and Michael Cera that redeem the film somewhat. As usual, the 'burbs are portrayed as a spiritual no-man's-land where all your dreams go to die, and the entire film is soundtracked to the likes of hipster bands like Belle and Sebastian. Talk about right out of Indie Moviemaking 101. What IS interesting is that the film takes a pro-life stance. This is a viewpoint you're not going to see much coming out of Hollywood, so once again I can't completely dismiss the film. But the movie also asks you to believe that this kid's gonna have the baby, give it up for adoption, and simply move on with her life without ever even wondering about the little tyke, who resides in the same zip code. You've got to be kidding me. Juno is this year's "Crash" or "Little Miss Sunshine," i.e. the fraudulent indie film. Why do the critics always fall for these films? Expand

Not really a film, just a bunch of overly articulate scenesters acting out of the ream of plausibility. Hamburger phones, wisecracking store clerks, impossible to follow lingo that you'll never hear elsewhere, painfully cutesy montages to indie tracks....the key to comedy is believability and when nearly everyone acts outside of that sphere, I'll tune out. I walked into Little Miss Sunshine expecting a high brow artsy comedy and got an indie easy going flick with simple but pretty good laughs. I walked into Juno expecting an over indie perhaps too witty for its own good type flick and at first thats exactly what it was, but soon developed into a very intelligent film with successful dramatic aspects. Juno tried so unbelievably hard to impress that I was tired of it after 15 minutes. The more serious scenes, instead of being moving, were hollow and contrived. Although a witty, pithy film which reflects the disenchantment of contemporary youth, the script overreaches. The dialogue is too constructed, and the protagonist's plight too hard to connect with. Still, good acting all around, and Michael Cera warms my heart.

Very decent flick... tons of witty humor that doesn't seem contrived. It's not a chick or dude flick, it's just a very plausible story full of funny moments. Yes, it's for older people so reviewers giving it low scores are still immature in their movie critic skills, thus can't yet understand the humor. 2 points off for the ending which I felt was weak on several levels. But overall, we've just seen a star being born in Ellen Page, she played the part perfectly and will be nominated for best actress (but not win / too young) Go see it, ignore the low scores, they are all from teens with unresolved angst. I think the film is actually a fairly mature, thought provoking story about an unwed teen learning to cope with a surprise--and decidedly unwanted--pregnancy. The sound track after awhile, did get a tad annoying. However the script makes up for it with a heart-touching story that will warm the heart of many. I recommend this film to college age people

Juno was funny where it needed to be and uncomfortable where it needed to be. To those who find it unrelateable, you are in the minority. This movie wonderfully handles the mid-Western suburban teen family life and condition. The acting was excellent by all parties (even Jennifer Garner, from whom I did not expect anything) and I can't wait to see it again.

Indie-dom needs more movies like "Juno", a sort of antidote to the similarly themed "Stephanie Daley". Juno(Ellen Page) is grace under pressure personified; she's unflappable rather than angst-ridden. Juno is a nice, decent girl who just happens to be pregnant. Some might quibble that her dialogue is over-written, but you could argue that her sublime delivery of words is just a defense mechanism against alienation and depression. Some people really are this smart. Paulie(Michael Cera), her boyfriend and a real stand-up guy, would've made a good father; a much better father than Mark(Jason Bateman), the prospective adoptive parent who's twice Paulie's age. "Juno" is slyly subversive in its suggestion that a teen would make a better parent than some guy in a suit and tie. "Juno" might not be an entirely realistic film, but it may only seem that way because adoption might not be an avenue most teen girls ever consider. Expand

Once in a while, critics will go collectively ga ga for a movie obviously unworthy of the praise. This time around, the movie is JUNO,the most overrated movie of the year,if not of the last decade. Never before a movie tries so hard to be cool (endless pop references, namedrops of critically reverd bands, hipster lingo..).While I realize that the main girl was supposed to be funny and cute, she came off as painfully obnoxious. The whole time I waited for someone to heartily slap her across teh face.Only then, the movie would have been worth the six bucks I spent on it.I really could go on and on about the faults of this flick(and believe me there are many),but instead i'll just warn whoever will listen to stay away from this movie. But then again, some people enjoy getting their teeth pulled... easily the most overrated film of the year. only the pseudo-intellectual, generic-liberal, indie kids of the world will enjoy any part of it- and most of them were already convinced they loved it before it came out. i'm amazed that so many critics can't see through this tripe. the whole film is so forced and disingenuous, the characters exist nowhere in reality, and the dialogue is absurd. it's the poor man's garden state- basically a cross between napoleon dynamite and crash (two of the more obnoxious, overrated films in recent memory). i think i laughed once. please don't be duped by this movie. national treasure 2 would be a better alternative. I'm not quite sure what some of the low scorers were expecting when they went to see this movie - apparently their noses were too far in the air to get a good look at the screen. Juno is definitely hilarious and filled with some great one-liners that are well-synced to a Gen X audience and younger. Cody's dialogue is quick and creative, though perhaps a bit more than what one would truly expect from a 16-year-old. Still, the whole thing works beautifully. Well worth the price of a ticket. This movie was ridiculously overhyped, like the other negative reviews have said. The script was amazingly clunky (no black people so we can use ghetto slang ironically-LOL!), Juno's character was pretentious and "quirky" to a fault, and the 15 minute long indie-wank scene in the middle (My favorite song is a Sonic Youth cover of a Carpenter's song) made me want to kill myself. This film is the visual equivalent of shopping at Urban Outfitters: hipness mass-marketed to teenagers that don't "conform". Expand

The movie is shit. I'm just imagining the meeting where the executives first read this script. "But sir, this script sucks, the characters aren't likable or relatable, and the plot goes absolutely nowhere! How are we going to get people to like this movie?" "We'll just namedrop a bunch of bands and musicians that hipsters claim to listen to even when most of them probably don't, and try to be hip by making sure the viewer knows the girl is wearing Chuck Taylor's and trying to dress like rock musicans that died when she was 3!" Juno is an interesting movie in that it touches upon a sensitive political topic yet comes off not only surprisingly neutral but comic as well. One could think the movie to have “pro-choice” sentiments in the sense the sole protester was also a high school student who mostly chanted dry slogans. Yet at the same time the abortion clinic’s receptionist was portrayed as equally boxy with an indifferent and crass attitude. In fact when the director was asked about the movies political slant said something to the effect that it is not intended for either but that one could project one view or the other upon it. Kudos for him staying true to his vision. I do believe though this movie to be helpful in exposing people to further think about the topic of abortion and or adoption. There were also educational moments that could help one decide what to do & or advise in such a case as an unplanned pregnancy. But this seemed more of an unintended effect. If I were to philosophically pigeonhole this movie I’d have to say it came off as somewhat nihilistic leaning towards romantic by the end. The character of Juno is really what made this film interesting as the witty and quirky lead. She really captured the cynicism of today’s youth while still holding on to a glimmer of goodness and hope. You could really see the characters struggling to be genuine with their selves, especially when it came to revealing their romantic feelings. You could tell just how hard it was not only to express themselves, as teenagers often have problems with, but more so taking a risk by making themselves vulnerable to another. I was happy to see this film had positive ending giving hope in family and love that the world needs so dearly in order to posses trust. Expand

Juno” can be self-aware, hillarious, and insightful, especially in the first twenty minutes, and the plot is too similar to “Immediate Family,” but Cody’s screenplay is rich and unique and dashes all expectations as soon as Mark and Vanessa are introduced into the fold. Page is given a forum to provide one of her best performances to date acting off some truly great actors who excel with the material including Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons. “Juno” is thankfully not a preachy sentimental sappy offering, it’s just a grounded, sweet, funny, and excellent dramedy about smart teenagers and the world they live in that doesn’t always make sense. It’s just a breath of fresh air from the “High School Musical” and “Bratz” crap. I hope we see more of this ilk. Expand

While many films crank the idiosyncrasies of the characters out of whack, this film delivers a cast that is surprisingly mundane: every day parents, fairly nerdy boyfriend who likes orange Tic Tacs... it's the way the characters talk and interact that's so funny. True, nothing explodes... but I'd already seen Live Free or Die Hard, so I was cool with that. If you like clever dialogue? You'll love Juno. Expand

Ugh. Once Juno's friend said "Oh my blog" instead of "Oh my God", I knew we were going to be irritated to no end, and we certainly were. This movie wants to have the idiosyncratic characters of "Rushmore" and more specifically "Ghost World"-- Juno wishes she were anywhere near as cool as Thora Birch's Enid. This movie lacks subtlety and moreover hits you over the head with its imagined adorable quirkiness, Not only does Juno have a phone shaped like a hamburger but she has a line stating she is on her hamburger phone. It's stuff like that which made this movie excruciating. Thank God for Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons who make the most of their scenes, and are the only ones who actually make their dialogue tolerable. Jennifer Garner's character is sympathetic and relatable-- so much so she seems to be in a different movie altogether. I wouldn't be so incensed about this movie if people weren't hailing it as the second coming of John Hughes, which is blasphemy. By this time next year this movie is going to be dated. Expand

Nothing to make you think after leaving. Largely a Christian message in a heathen package, i.e., adoption not abortion, don't be alone with a man or he'll get the wrong idea. Marriage is the perfect family unit, etc. Mostly boring with a bright spot here and there. Juno (Ellen Page) is likable, her dad is okay and her step mother has a few good lines. Character development on the others is minimal, inconsitent, and largely one dimensional. If you are between 13 and 20 you will likely love the movie. For everyone else, wait for the DVD. Expand

The vast majority of the movie critics complain about the beginning of the movie (which I thought was fine), and many express some reservations about Juno's string of one-liners. Not every kid is Juno, of course, but what she says comes across to me as completely normal and real. The screenwriter isn't trying to say "Wow I'm amazing, look at all the one-liners I can put together." She's saying, here's this character, and she deals with her world by keeping it at an ironic distance. She's not quite grown up enough to actually handle things, so she uses this half-jokey attitude toward it. Totally believable, totally real. I knew several people like this during high school and college ... didn't you? Not to the same extent, of course; nobody is "on" all the time. For the people who thought the movie was dropping all the names of bands and stuff in an attempt to be cool: I thought exactly the opposite. It is through this shared popular culture that Juno connects with the older guy who never grew up ... and this guy is NOT the hero of the movie. He represents the path not chosen, the Seth-Rogen-in-Knocked-Up guy ... the guy who is NOT right for her. He represents immaturity. And their entire conversation about being uber-hipster also represents immaturity. The point of the conversation isn't dropping names for the sake of dropping names! Those of you who think that's what's going on have completely missed the point of that whole scene. The parents are the most realistic parents I've seen in a teen movie since I don't know when. As a parent of a to-be-teenager-all-too-soon, I appreciated that a lot. The mom told Juno she had no clue what she was getting into with the married guy, and she was right. Unlike most teenage movies, this one reflects reality: teenagers don't quite know what's going on in the world nearly as well as their parents do. Whether a movie is "funny" or not is a matter of taste. I loved Blazing Saddles, some people can't stand it, whatever, you're not going to get anywhere arguing about that sort of thing. Expand

Really this movie is pretty mediocre. It's main fault is that there is no depth to the story, all the characters, relationships and plots are dealt with superficially, so you don't feel invested in the characters or the story itself. The dialogue is is clever and jangles along well enough to keep you entertained and amused throughout, but at the end of the day it didn't really make me particularly care about the movie. On the other hand, this movie is far from horrible. The dialogue IS witty, and the acting is solid for the most part (especially the younger actors) so I have a hard time understanding why anyone out there would hate it. No the dialogue may not be "realistic", but this is a MOVIE, not a court deposition. If you are that hung up on realism and making sure a movie you better stick to documentaries, so shut up already. Guess what, this isn't exactly art house avant garde, so get over yourselves. Ironically, I'm sure half the people who hate this probably loved Napoleon Dynamite. Expand

This morning i woke up early and went to The Savages matinee showing at my local art house theater with a random assortment of 20 anywheres age people, mostly older, and loved it. Then at 7 i went to the multiplex to see Juno at a packed house filled with recently pubescent kids with their dates that watched the film as they struggled in an attempt to touch each other. I was expecting to love the film but was filled with the cognitive dissonance of paying ten dollars for a film that i was constantly battling with. A film that you like will suck you in so that your mental chatter stops leaving you to ponder what is going to happen next if you ponder anything other than the immediate sensations of what the actors are saying at the moment. During the first 15-30 minutes of the film as the masses around me laughed at the punchlines that i interpreted were supposed to be funny and i sat with a blank stare i felt as alien as David Bowie's Spider's from Mars. Thus began a hour and a half long inward debate of why i didn't think this movie was funny. What i found amusing was that the parts i laughed at were the parts that correlated with a relative silence throughout the crowd. People laughed at the set design and general visuals. I thought man, Wes Anderson did a way better job at that and their just trying to mimic him. People laughed at the rapid fire dialogue of ellen page's character and i appreciated that what she was basically saying was funny but comedy, at least in modern day form just doesn't work at that speed. What the character Juno says is in theory funny but compare when Juno talks and when Bateman or Cera's characters talk. Comedy comes from some basis in reality and no one but maybe a genius talks with the amount of elucidation that Juno does off the cuff. The script is good in theory but there is too much there, if they slowed it down and unpacked some of Juno's dialogue the film would be much funnier. Either Reitman, Cody, or Page have no since of comic timing. Also i should add i like to think that i wanted to like this movie, why else would i pay ten dollars to go see it. But the movie just tries so hard to be cool. And Cody's script seems to be trying so hard to prove that she's isn't just a dumb stripper. It makes me think "we know you can write, just tone it down a notch." But maybe seeing the savages earlier threw me off since the two movies take such a different approach to a "tragedy" and turn it into humor. To couple drama with comedy is a difficult thing to do and i just believe the savages pulled it off much better than juno. Come to think of it, knocked up pulled it off a lot better also. But this genius of knocked up is it's extemperaneous feel whereas Juno feels scripted throughout. Expand

Juno and her friend, who may seem quirky, over-witty, and "hip" to many, would be downright sleazy in real life. I am a senior in high school and know the type of trashy, non-conformists that try so hard to not conform with the life around them that they conform to something much more conforming. Does that make sense? It is immaturity at its worst. Every time Juno opened her clever mouth I just wanted to shove paper towels down her throat so she would shut up. This movie may be inspiring for indie wannabes whose generation has simply missed the boat, but for the rest of us that don't act like they were born in the wrong decade, it is perceived as trashy and irritating. I have to give it a five only because I have to appreciate the acting by Michael Cera (who I think may be in danger of being type cast for the rest of his life), Jennifer Garner, and J.K. Simmons who showed he has much more range as an actor than I thought he did. These characters were fun to watch throughout. Unfortunately Ellen Page (Juno) was always in the screen with them. Expand

In a season of heavy, dark dramas and even heavy dark musicals, Juno is like a breath of fresh, crisp air full of laughter and happiness. Ellen Page proves Hard Candy was no fluke, she is perfectly endearing as Juno, the smart, wise cracking, yet vunerable lead and all the supporting cast are just as good with enough screen time for each to establish their characters. Jason Reitman, after Thank You for Smoking, delivers a solid one-two punch and must now be considered a director to watch. Juno is a joy! Take a breather and go see it! Expand

  1. A blithe charmer balanced somewhere between a life-should-be-so-neat fairy tale and a life's-a-real-bitch tragicomedy, leaves political debate at the ticket counter and focuses solely on what it's like for Juno MacGuff to be Juno MacGuff.
  2. It's the writer, Diablo Cody, and the director, Jason Reitman, who have screws loose. Or maybe they're just desperate to make their film a chick "Rushmore" or "Garden State."
