Here Common isn't called upon to do much heavy lifting in the acting department, but he plays well with Queen Latifah. Sure, the movie is a formula. A formula that works reminds us of why it became a formula.
  2. The reason Just Wright works is simple. It finds ways to let familiar characters move around inside a familiar premise like living, breathing, likable human beings.

A very rare contemporary romantic comedy that doesn't succumb to terminal stupidity.
  4. Michael Elliot, the Philadelphia native who wrote Just Wright as a vehicle for Latifah - and who was on set for most of the shoot - says that Common's earnestness, and eagerness, and his sense of responsibility in carrying the movie, were palpable.
  5. The been-there, done-that nature of the plot doesn't take away from the undeniable sweetness found in Just Wright.
  6. The movie is a rigged game of clichés and platitudes, but fans will be pleased by additional proof that Latifah is a lovable Queen but not a pampered princess.
  7. Two hours of femmepowering wish fulfillment.

A film so tightly rigged that even its star's centrifugal charms can't keep you fully checked in.

If you can overlook that last little bit of sports fantasy, you just might like Just Wright.

Just Wright is as formulaic as they come, but at its core is a surprisingly tender romantic drama.
  11. The chemistry between the leads is more cozy than sexy, but the biggest issue is Latifah's noticeable - and admirable - discomfort with the rom-com clichés found throughout Michael Elliot's screenplay.
  12. A formulaic sports romance with the texture of a strawberry smoothie.

Painting by numbers often gets a bad rap: While it takes little originality to fill in the romantic-comedy blanks, even a simple, competent job can sometimes feel like a breath of fresh air.
  14. It's one thing for a romantic comedy to be predictable - they all end at the same destination, after all. But it's quite another thing to be predictable at every twist and turn of the story.

Even within the most formulaic of genres, this Cinderella tale is uncommonly predictable.
  16. Telegraphs its every move. There are simply no surprises.

With her (Latifah), Just Wright feels hampered by arbitrary contrivances; without her, it wouldn't be enough movie to exist at all.
  18. That it squanders a terrific cast in the process -- one that also includes Common, Phylicia Rashad and Pam Grier -- makes it all the more disappointing.
  19. Nothing seems real here, with everything too broadly drawn.

Too much of this love triangle rings false.
  21. Queen Latifah's warmth has boosted middling movies like "Beauty Shop" and "Last Holiday," but she and costar Common can't strike enough sparks to ignite this weak romantic comedy.
  22. 38
It's light in tone, feather-weight. But there aren't many laughs in it.
  23. You can't just cast an appealing actress in the lead role -- in this case Queen Latifah ("Valentine's Day, " "The Secret Life of Bees") -- and expect her to do all the heavy lifting.
  24. Pleasant but dull formula film.
  25. Another movie, not as awful as this one, might one day find better use for the easygoing vibe between Queen Latifah and Common, the stars of Just Wright.
  26. 25
Nearly everything about Just Wright is just wrong.

  1. Just caught this one on cable - it's a sweet movie. Common is excellent - haven't seen him in anything previously, and Queen Latifa awesome as usual. The god sister plays her role with too little nuance, and the "real" NBA players are fun but can't act. It was good enough to keep this NBA fan watching while the Pacers/Bulls first round game was happening. That says something. Full Review »

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Kind of a sappy movie with lots of feel-good aspects. However, the underlying plot is completely unbelievable--basketball star falls in mad love with a way too overweight girl. Anyway, if you can let you mind go beyond this major plot flaw, it's an okay movie to rent. Full Review »

A Review By: Sam Fragoso "Just Wright" **1/2 Queen Latifah and rapper turned actor, Common star in the new romantic comedy called "Just Wright". It's seems to me that Hollywood has suddenly stopped caring about the general public and the money they spend on their movies or maybe they have just simply ran out of ideas for a good, heartfelt romantic comedy. Anyways well save the rant for another time; let's get on to "Just Wright". The film revolves around Leslie Wright; she's a hardworking physical therapist, that’s a die-hard New Jersey Nets fan. So on the way home from a game she bumps into, who other then Scot McKnight... an NBA superstar (fiction) for the New Jersey Nets, that she ironically adores. He glances at her, she dazzles her eyes back it him and there it is... love at first site. If I'm undermining the plot, I apologize. But I am just so tired of romantic-comedies being so predictable. It's like they write a chart out: Couple meets at an off beat location, affection shown here, complication/break up there, man or women realizes they have made a mistake, reconcile and get back together... film over, happy ending. Sometimes that predictability is fine in films, because the story is so enjoyable, but not here. However not everything is bland in "Just Wright". I always enjoy Queen Latifah in films, she has a natural charisma on screen, and I really admire that. I enjoyed some of the basketball scenes, implausible as they are. And James Pickens Jr. delivers his lines of wisdom to his daughter with affection and sincerity. But it's predictable, implausible and the last twenty minutes of the film are paced so fast, you'd think there's a time bomb on set awaiting their finish. Queen Latifah should know better, and looking at Common's resume suggests he doesn't. Full Review »
