I am a cat owner, I admit, but even I was surprised at the power of Kedi. Where did all that emotion come from? It's because what Torun really captures in her unexpectedly powerful film is kindness in its purest form.
Director Ceyda Torun was born in Istanbul and lived there as a young girl, leaving the city with her family at age 11 to live in Jordan and later New York City, but it’s abundantly clear her heart has never left her birthplace. Kedi is a valentine to her childhood home.

Foreign film with fabulous city photography and of course cat pictures that melt your heart. There were wonderful stories of the cats and their caregivers. Saw this last weekend at the Landmark Edina.

This movie was wonderful. Whether you're a cat lover or not, it's hilarious, poignant, and amazingly well-shot. A love letter to the cats of Istanbul, and their guardian angels who keep them fed and sheltered. Go see it!

An enchanting documentary by Ceyda Torun, operates on three levels, and we’re not speaking metaphorically here.
In its own pleasantly dreamy and lilting way, the film embodies what it preaches: As life gets rougher, people endure not by hardening themselves even further, but by continuing to find the freedom to be kind. In Istanbul, the chaos never really stops. Kedi slyly reminds us that the humanity, too, has always been there.
While you don’t have to be crazy about cats to enjoy this documentary, it would certainly help.
Ceyda Torun’s Kedi is an open, tender-hearted meditation on the relationship between felines and humans.
Though pleasant to watch, Torun’s feature debut feels more like a meandering montage than a structured narrative, and it could easily be half as long.
A documentary that takes us to the Turkish city of Istanbul. A place where cats roam free, submitting to no master other than themselves. The film explores the bond between man and animal. It does so by showing the profound effects the cats on the lives of the city's human inhabitants. Coming and going as they please, these felines are often nobody's pet. Yet they still find themselves considered family by the people they come in contact with. The stories shared here of the bonds formed between man and animal are often touching. It's a very warm hearted film.
Of course we also get to see many beautiful shots of cats. Watching them live their lives is interesting. There's something that has always set them apart from other animals. The movie uses to it's advantage very well. Certainly any cat lover is sure to enjoy this film. It will also appeal to anyone who has a love for animals in general. Some of the scenery shots go on for a little too long without feline intervention, but overall this is very well made documentary that stays true to it's subject. Certainly one of the best films of 2017 (which was a great year for movies all around). Don't miss it. By focusing on animals, Kedi manages to find a lot to say about the human condition. Do animal make us better people? Can they? It may even reach the dog people out there.

While it might be easy to mistake this documentary for an extended cat video, "Kedi" delivers so much more -- excellent cinematography, gentle humor, and insightful observations about how we might better get along with others and ourselves. Having seen this in a jam-packed, 750-seat theater for a matinee showing, this release proves there are audiences for content that don't involve explosions or inane laughs. Feline lovers will no doubt adore this one the most, but those who appreciate good cinema, regardless of content, will likely find much to enjoy here, too.

It's a film that leaves a lasting impression, reminding us of the profound impact animals can have on our lives and the importance of coexistence in a bustling urban landscape. i saw the reviews here and watched it on Pipi Film and Television ****.
