    Rarely has an action movie been so entertaining and incredibly memorable a week later. A true standout of style, emotion and character that is rarely seen on the big screen in this day and age. If there's one complaint to be had, it's that by the time the film ends, you're ready for another 2 hours of controlled mayhem. Mr. Bay and Mr. Bruckheimer should be taking notes.

    Ok, kids, listen up. If you have not seen Samurai films or HK movies, then you don't understand what this is about. The picture opens like a Shaw Brothers' production (Shaw Brothers made a ton of Martial Arts films in HK, years ago) and continues like a hybrid of Asian cult cinema. Much like most Asian action films, it's a story of revenge and contains many pop culture characters. The anime segment is very cool, it's almost as if the whole picture could have been animated. Films like these are no longer made, Tarantino believes that we're due. The action, dialogue, camera angles, music, set design and acting make this film very good. Some feel that this movie is too violent, however I think that it is so overdone that it no longer becomes violent, it's entertainment. For a reference, please watch the Japanese movie "Lady Snowblood" to grasp what Tarantino is doing. … Expand

    Maybe a little slow, but it turns out to be prehaps the greatest action film i have ever seen. Pure film making. QT is back, and has definantley made a hit.

    Well, It wuz OK. I watched it with my friend Sonya and we were laffin like mad man. Oh no snap snap. That Sigourney Weavahh aka: Miss Horney Jeebird, was terrabull in dis movie. I can't balieve dat they let herr in dis movie Oh no snap snap is what I thot when I seen her face on that TV screen. OH no .

    Just incredible... music, performances, fights, everything is just amazing. The way Tarantino can bring a simple story so complex is to be admired.

    It's off-beat, unexpected and simple amazing. There are absolutelly no movies that are like Kill Bill. It is directed in a way that that keeps your eyes and ears completely stimulated. Every fight scene felt like a different movie. Some parts all you could see is shadows behind a blue screen. Other parts of the movie where like a Steven Siegal knife fight. Others still, are more of a showdown with kitana swords. People who can't take gore or don't appreciate a good scene will probebly not like this movie. I have never scene any of QTs movies, which probebly let me appreciate it even more because I had no expectations. Try not to expect anything and you'll be giving it a 10 too. A final note, I never, ever type reviews up for movies. It may not be made for everyone, but Kill Bill is very underrated and was definitlly THE BEST movie I have seen all year.… Expand

    One of the coolest movies this year. Yes, it is extremely gory to the point of absurdity, the profanity is horrible, and it has some elements in the plot that are just wrong (yeah, like that...ahem), but Kill Bill is honestly just a good time. The action is upbeat and very well choreographed, some of the best fight scenes since Cowboy Bebop. There are also countless homages to old school kung fu flicks and anime, which I really appreciate. If you can handle the ridiculous violence, then go see KB right now. Great movie.… Expand

    I have figured out that there are two types of people in this world, those that think QT is a genius and those who think he is completely full of it. For those in the latter, I feel bad for you. Kill Bill was the most incredible experience I have ever had in a movie theater. Everything was first rate. Ending set up vol 2 nicely. I think as a whole, we'll find out that there is more to kill bill than shown in vol 1.… Expand

    One of the best movies of all time!!!! This movie doesn't deserve the put downs its getting for violence. The violence is so unrealistic and cartoon-like that it doesnt even gross you out. (intentionally) And don't always listen to the critics. They're not "special" its just their opinion of the movie. And not everyone is gonna have the same taste as you so just see the movie and judge for yourself. … Expand

    Kill Bill, pure art, i dont want to see matrix now, the fights are more superior and less computer; Kill Bill vol 1 is like putting Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, pulp fiction and Mortal Kombat all together.

    Those who dislike this movie either came in expecting to hate it or have no taste in film or theatre. The only main flaw i see in this movie is that it was split in 2. It should have been 1 long clever masterpiece.

    Kill Bill is beautiful, extremely well-done movie, and wildly entertaining if you can stomache the bloodbath. What a work of art. This movie left me wanting more. A lot more. The zero ratings make me laugh, but heed them if you are squeamish. This movie more than delievers on all of Tarantino's trademarks, except for his classic diologue, and blows his previous films away concerning stunning imagery.… Expand

    I find the review posted by J. Cinnante to be very very offensive to fans of QT, like myself. Just because you're puny brain is too weak to comprehend the genius of Tarantino ( he has an IQ of 160, so i'm not just "being faithful" or talking outta my ass) doesn't mean that you have to rag on those who get him. Tarantino is the essence of a great filmmaker...not only does he know how to construct an interesting story, but he has the balls to go against the "standards" of cinema. He's an R-rated, American Jean-Luc Godard. I GET THAT...don't post your gibberish if it's all insults to somebody's fans..that's just totally rude. The fact that you think the film is "just blood and guts all over the place" shows that you really don't see the movie for what it is. It's a totally blank statement.     Kill Bill may be the best directed film I have ever seen. The film oozes style. Every visual is meant to convey a certain atmosphere, and the construction of these shots is so good, that they do so effortlessly. The movie is simplistic, and has little substance, but I don't mean this as a criticism. Kill Bill is a great film, not because of what happens in it, but because of how it happens.     Waaah! this movie is a great cinema masterpiece, even if the story is not deep enough. I would have given 10 if the movie could have been a little bit more developed. Other than that, all was great: The camera view, the music,etc... Anyway i'm too lazy to write more:P

    Great intriguing fun movie. A bit more violent than I usually like but it is all a cartoonish sort of violence, except for the actual cartoon portion.

    Pure cinematic marvel, i hired it out once and much like tarantino's other movies found myself enjoying it more after repeated veiwings, and so what if the story's thin in vol 1 who needs substance when you've got this much style.

    A superior popcorn flick, both entertaining and hilarious. The anime piece in the middle of the film was brilliant, and was vital in creating the fantasy amosphere the story needs to be successfull.

    I must say that I think a lot of the voters here totally missed the point of the movie. It's a heavily stylized tribute to a genre...watching it like a straightforward movie without a sense of humor is like...watching Spaceballs as serious scifi.

    Its obvious most of the people who dont like this movie have a problem with the excessive blood and gore. Well for one you would have to be a moron not to know what you were watching before u went to see the movie. Anybody who saw the previews and truely knows QT work would have known it was going to be excessively violent and it was going to have some disturbing scenes (Resvoir dogs hello?) We saw 2 children watch there parents get murdered, news flash things like that happen everyday thats one of the reasons Kill Bill is a masterpiece and what makes QT so great, he manages to incorperate reality in with exaggerated and sometimes dreamlike non realistic scenes. Kill Bill is like a dream/nightmare with the excessive gore and unrealistic fighting mixed with scenes that are more or less realistic such as the fight with Green in Cali or the inclusion of the Yakuza clan in the story, his technique of not telling the story in chronological order is second to none. Its simply a masterpiece an ode to kung fu, Bruce Lee and anyone that gives it an 0 is a fool a prude or both.… Expand

    I actually couldn't stand Uma Thurman prior to this movie but my respect for her as an actress after seeing her work with Mr. Tarantino on this film has made me a fan of hers. As for the movie itself, I love it. I think the character of Budd best described the entire dilemma of the movie with the line, "that woman deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die...then again, so does she". It's this great bad guy turned protagonist storyline and you find yourself rooting for this character who is actually not a very good person herself. Her redeeming quality is her desire for honest and respectable motherhood, but she is an assassin, or as Bill later puts it, a natural born killer, who enjoys killing people. As for those who said the said there is no humor, you can't tell me that thirteen hours in a truck (with the name "Buck" gave it) spent wiggling her toes to make her legs work didn't induce the smallest of smiles. C'mon now. And as for the "no plot" skeptics, are you kidding? The plotline is classic. Revenge, the most used action plot, and used as it may be, this was an entirely different spin on it. The culmination of kung fu fantasy fighting mixed with good old fashioned western justice makes this action flick a ten for me, and I normally hate gory movies.… Expand

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 is the most exciting movie I have ever f.....g seen. Well, OK, half a movie. Black Mamba (Uma Thurman) has been sent into a coma by an attempt on her life by Bill's (David Carradine) crew of assassins, of which she was one until she wanted out to get married. Coming out of a 4 year coma, she starts a globe trotting revenge tour with her "kill list 5." Here are just some of the movie style characters she portrays on her road to comicbook superheroine revenge satisfaction: Samurai Swordswoman, Helmeted Alien Inquisitor, Knocked-up Texas Bride, Raging Feminista, Jesus H. Christ, Frustrated Mother and Housewife, Bubble Headed Blonde American Tourist, Shapely Video Game Warrior. Scrutiny of movie genres is on the plate as KBV1 eases onto the screen: the mood is struck with the very first image of "Shaw Scope Film Presentations" oriental style placard. Is it a martial arts film? Then the black title card of a jokingly attributed quote, is it a bow to the silent film? A parody? Followed with the black and white film stock, is it a western? Heroine Black Mamba's beaten face in extreme close up as the unseen Bill intones "You probably think me sadistic." Is it noire? Black Mamba saying "Bill, the baby is yours." Is it a mystery? We are given tastes of all these styles of movies and characters in KBV1 and, more often than not, all on the same fork. Or chopstick if you'd rather. KBV1 starts with a close up on gore, fills itself with fantastic, action packed gore, and ends with the threat of tender sudden death. This is not the intensity most audiences settle into without some kind of respite: a love interest, childhood flashbacks, long minutes of tedious exposition with minor characters, or some other mindless distraction to appease their soggy entertainment needs. Here Tarantino gives us "Okinawa, one way" as the essential dialogue to start us on our trip. We don't want or need to know where she gets her money, where she lives, etc etc ad nauseaum. Just give us what we need to propel the action. She's flying off to get her revenge. Thats all we want to know and see. Let me use an example of unnecessarily graphic depictions of violence to help illustrate Tarantino's effective use of cinematic brutality. In the mawkish directing talent of Clint Eastwood (I would not miss a Sean Penn performance, even directed by Pee Wee Herman) I winced at the violence in "Mystic River." Twice. I think it is a failure of filmmaking if your story's tension is so thin, your intent so flimsy, or the consequences so vague, that you can't trust your audience to imagine all the aspects of the impact of a kick to a characters face, without actually having to show the REPEATED kick to the face. The wince added nothing to my understanding of the human pain. Tarantino's brutality usually avoids "real" human violence. In Reservoir Dogs, for instance, he only intimates VERY STRONGLY the cop's ear actually being cut off. The tension is so palpable, when the built-up moment comes, the camera skips to the ear landing on the floor, we feel the pain, and have all the impact we need and desire. The payoff satisfies. Yet Tarantino's ultra-violent sequences are integral, indeed, fundamental, to this story, and set moods of amusement, shock, toe-tapping musicality, athletic endeavor, even subtle and striking beauty. So f..k you Clint. The vast majority of good stories involve some kind of violence, if not to the body then to the soul. (As the matter of fact, doesn't a lot of memorable real life history involve horrendous violence?) When you are paying homage to a vast number of different movies, as Tarantino does, it's natural that you would use vast, different, and relentless physical and emotional violence to do it. In KBV1, Black Mamba does some terrible things to people outside of her superhero circle. In these scenes the actual slashing or aftermath is more implicit than explicit. We see her biting her rapist's lip, the camera swings away and next we see, he is on the floor, dead. The payoff still satisfies. Once Black Mamba is in the realm of superheroine however, all bets are off. Blood gushes like uncapped fire hydrants, eyes are ripped out, legs shot and sliced off in operatic, rhythmic, stylish and juicy fashion. Once the animation sequence takes you to that giddy level of involvement and awe, the sequences of a simple motorcade traveling so stylish and enthralling, I had tears in my eyes from the effectiveness of some of the scenes. The House of Blue Leaves scene is a masterpiece of martial arts action. The mayhem gears up with long takes following our heroine, jolts us into the seriousness of her intentions, then builds up the best 20 minutes of cinematic violence ever filmed. Just when the action is climaxing, another rocking oldies song starts and kicks it into a higher gear of swinging, slashing, and spinning madness. Then the lights go out and another cinematic miracle happens before your eyes as Black Mamba fights as if in a "computer chip" (as my 12 y/o nephew called it, in this day of Celebrity Death Match and stickdeath.com) against a blue screen. There are 3 left to be vanquished in KBV2. And I don't even need it. Vol. 1 has thrilled me like no other movie in my life. Vol. 2 is bound to be pure icing on the cake. I f..king love this movie.     This movie rocks!! Tarantino brilliantly directs this tale of revenge, honor, blood, action, drama, and kung fu!! Its not for everyone, but I highly recommend it to fans of Tarantino and kung fu!!

    One of those films that you either love or hate. I personally love it and all its stylistic changes, switching back and forth from a spaghetti western to a samurai revenge film in the matter of minutes. The violence is terrific and most of the time completely hilarious, and the storytelling is brilliant throughout.

    Two thumbs up for this movie ! Professor Tarantino is a genius ! I first noticed Tarantino's name in Nirvana's album "In Utero"..I love Kurt Cobain also...they are both awesome in art !

    This movie was great! It was funny and action packed! From a blood hungry bride to a Japanese schoolgirl who can wield a ball and chain it was a great movie. Very good storyline too I believe.

    This and the sequel to this movie are still my favorite movies of ALL TIME. Loved everything about it. yes it's rather gory, but it almost doesn't seem that gory given that's it's given in such a cartoon-ish way, which i Love. I'm utterly amazed that the critics for this movie are so low, i can't get enough of the movie. GREAT fight scenes, and i love how they add little funny tidbits throughout that story, as well as add quirky sounds throughout the movie, it really keep my attention every single time i watch it.     I think this is my favorite Tarantino film. I've seen so many review saying "it was so gory" and the "violence was cheap and fake looking." These comments always make me laugh. You don't get it. This is a homage to kung-fu flicks of the 60's and 70's; they WERE cheap and exaggerated. Most of all they were FUN! If you don't like kung-fu flicks then why on earth would you watch this movie? This is not a soul searching drama, this is KUNG-FU!… Expand

    My favourite movie ever. Tarantino has delivered a wonderful cult-style film with a fluent mixture of samurai and western style. The one thing I really noticed was how easily it was to sympathize with almost all of the charaters, especially The Bride and Bill

    Kill Bill isn't supposed to be believable. Kill Bill is: gory, ridiculous, It's pure, unfiltered Tarantino. Kill Bill is: Cool. Brilliant, timeless classic, which is exactly what to expect from Quentin. Vol 1 and 2 are one of those kind of movies that I have to watch every time I see it on cable. It just never gets old.

    What?? I watched the best fight scene on my whole life this morning. I couldnt stop and watched vol2 too on the same day. It was total blood bath and i loved it. It would be an insult to to give this movie anything but 10 :)

    Smart, funny, very well performed and directed, a reference in the non-asiatic ninja film history. Like always with Tarantino, all the characters are awesome, and you can do a spin-off with every one of them. Really.

    Damn, if you where to watch vol 2 before this one (like i did) you would LOVE kill bill vol 1. I can see why people wouldn't like it, seeing how its mostly shooty shooty bangy bangy and very little plot in between (most of this plot is later found in vol 2). But hey, i love it. What can i say, it was one of the first Tarantino movies i ever watched and i love it.

    Kill Bill is a film where director and writer Quentin Tarantino tries out various techniques, not to see if they work, but simply for his own enjoyment and to boast of his talent for detail, especially when so many of these techniques are used simultaneously, which has created an unforgettable opening of a two part tale.
    Uma Thurman stars as a bruised and beaten woman known simply as ‘The    he Bride’, who is betrayed on her wedding day by her colleagues, a group of dangerous individuals known as the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, led by Bill (David Carradine).
    When they underestimate The Brides will to live, she eventually awakens from a coma and seeks revenge on those who wronged her, and as the opening quote on the screen suggests, “Revenge is a dish best served cold”, and this woman has nothing but cold and calculated on her mind.
    Tarantino has told the story in a non-linear fashion, using chapters to split up the story, and incorporating various flashbacks of how exactly the wedding scenario played out. But in regards to the bride, she sets off by making a list of those who portrayed her, and its clear from the beginning that this film was always going to be building to something bigger, does it take anything away from the film? Perhaps a little, it certainly stands on its own two feet, but the fact remains that we are introduced to these various characters but only get a handful of them. Saying that, however, the scenes with these particular members of the Deadly Viper group are fantastically gory, anime and exaggerated tone that only Tarantino is capable of pulling off with such gritty means.
    Uma Thurman’s ‘Bride’ is typically cold and in a particular mindset for the film, she delivers her kills with little mercy, perfectly portrayed by Thurman herself, who shows her willingness to throw herself into any role, a junkie in Pulp Fiction and now a deadly assassin.
    The final moments of the film, and the build up are quite remarkable. Tarantino utilises his devices including typical Japanese slashers and even Spagetti Westerns to culminate in a massively colourful fight scene, but the final confrontation between the Bride and O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu is a beautifully crafted scene, and a true powerhouse in filmmaking.
    For what it lacks in finalising a story, Kill Bill Vol. 1 certainly makes up for in its unique ability to combine visually striking scenes of blood splattered marvel, and Tarantino is truly at his best.    … Expand

    Visually stunning and magnificently gory, KIll Bill Vol. 1 is one of Tarintino's best films in my opinion. After The Bride, Uma Thurman, was betrayed by her boss, Bill, she is slapped in to a coma and left to wonder what happened to her baby. With an interesting story to complement beautiful violence, Kill Bill Vol. 1 is a true masterpiece.

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 is a masterpiece. Vengeance, justice and kung fu are combined to create an entertaining action film. Uma Thurman plays the main female character who slices her way through bad guys.

    Only few would dare to make a movie as insane as this, and Tarantino made it brilliant. A gripping revenge story that doesn't hold anything back. It was all over the place in style, direction, and musically which just made it completely original. Unexpectedly very funny and epic at the same time. One of the best!

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a bloody good time: lots of fake blood, sword fighting and limbs being cut off. The story is threadbare, but Volume 2 gives us the full story and compliments Volume 1, making it better if you ask me. Ms Thurman's acting was admittedly a bit wooden at times, but when she's good, she's good. That scream at the start, where she wakes up in the hospital? PURE GOLD.

    And the MUSIC! Twisted Nerve was... well, to put it lightly, it was irritating. The rest of the music is absolutely amazing; i've saved most of it into a playlist on Youtube. One song in particular stands out: The Lonely Shepard. It sounds like a fusion between East and West, incorporating a flute in to begin with and bringing in guitars and trumpets... It's the most triumphant song I have ever heard. Look it up, NOW.

    And the CAST! Uma Thurman brought her best, finally breaking into the lead spot after her part in another Tarantino affair Pulp Fiction. DAVID **** CARRADINE plays the titular Bill. Lucy Liu, who was the hottest thing in the world after the Charlie's Angels movie skyrocketed, plays this movie's "antagonist". Sonny Chiba is by far the most charming character in this film, playing portly little Hattori Hanzo. Michael Madsen is in Vol. 2! No-one brings a cast together like Quentin Tarantino, and I don't care who you are or what you smoke, but that's a fact you can't deny.

    On its own, it's a marvelous little gore flick. Watching it again after Vol. 2 brings something completely new to it. You just can't lose, unless you're a Fundy looking for a Boogeyman. Give this movie a go, and if you don't like the blood and swearing, go pick up "Ultraviolet" instead.    … Expand

    I purchased Kill Bill volumes one and two on bluray at black Friday. Today I watched the first Kill Bill and this is what I have too say. The kung fu/ action scenes were a 10 out of 10. The acting was 7 out of 10. And the directing and writing were a 9 out of 10. I enjoyed how sociopathic the movie was, and Thurmans performance. Overall I give this movie a 10 out of 10.

    To the average moviegoer,"Kill Bill" comes across as a nuanced film that appears shallow litered with flamboyant violence. And yet nothing could be further from the truth. Remarkably unique blend of various genres drawing from an abundant of influences constructing something very much his own. A bride (Uma Thurman) awakes from a long coma no longer carrying the baby before hand. Only revenge motivates her now to hunt down the assassination team that betrayed her, and once a part of. Breathtaking fight scenes function the same as dance numbers would in a musical. Stunningly beautiful and completely innovative. Highly-stylized, magnificent musical score, dynamic performances all around.… Expand

    This film is a combination of everything I love: Japanese cultural aspects, swordplay, a revenge plot, philosophy, and above all else, wit. Definitely one of the greatest films I've ever seen.

    Quentin Tarantino, a formidable filmmaker in Hollywood, who has masterminded great pictures like RESERVOIR DOGS and PULP FICTION, is also hugely responsible for the greatness behind KILL BILL: VOLUME 1 (KB1). KILL BILL was at first being scheduled for a single movie, but that single movie exceeds a running time of over four hours. The decision to separate the source into two parts was favourable KB1 was released in late 2003 while its sequel, KB2, was released in early 2004.

    To me, KB1 is a cinematic masterpiece. Everything in the movie was being meticulously orchestrated, right from the start of the movie to the end of it. I would say the movie is just tight. You would wish to imagine a tight, ripped body of a person, that's KB1. Editing of this movie is just sharp and great writing too. An element which caught my attention is the camera work itself I would say they are highly artistic and imaginative. In one particular scene, Tarantino exploited a long impeccable tracking shot with no cuts, and it is brilliant.

    Beyond the near-perfect cinematic experience which Tarantino has given us, Uma Thurman's performance deserved a praise too. She manipulated her character extremely well which I think it is being overlooked, her performance is decent. Her character in the film is boiling with sadness and anger and for example, in one scene, you could witness that pain or anger through Thurman's expression on her face that marks the work of a great actress.

    As a whole, this movie is daringly beautiful. The plot is simple, but Tarantino's clever navigation for this movie is excellent. Could I say it? Kill Bill Vol 1 is bloody, darkly comical, and unforgettable.

    Is Kill Bill a homage to great Asian action movies? Yes. Is Tarantino trying to outdo his cherished masters (on a budget that dwarfs their films)? Of course. Is there any other point of any of this? Let's see "Vol. 2."
