A thoroughly absorbing story, storylines woven together effortlessly, very realistic and moving performances, it's my favorite movie of 2001.

If you have a friend who labels all methodical films as boring, "Lantana" might be the perfect indoctrination to non-Hollywood fare. Misdirection is key to a good whodunnit. Director Ray Lawrence(working from Andrew Bovell's script) prompts us to figure out the killer's identity but it's always secondary to our affection for the characters. This is a very nice film.

The film of the year. That it wasn't considered for Canne is a travisty. Brilliant performances, notably Kerry Armsrtong, and brilliant writing make this an intelligent, subtle piece of cinema.

Dreary melodrama. The characters are about as interesting as cardboard.

Twisty and involving. Some of the relationships seem a little too convenient, but it's well-acted across the board.

The acting is top-notch, and LaPaglia, who makes the cop's torment palpable, gives the performance of his career.
  2. In addition to the strong script, the ensemble performances are topnotch, with no one hogging the limelight.

For the briefest of moments, someone not paying attention might mistake Lantana for a mystery. -- Lantana is actually an examination of human interaction.
