When class conflict stirs the viewer's attention as much as a canine hero's homecoming, it's clear that this isn't the usual (read: mindless) family entertainment.

About as good as a Lassie movie can be.
  3. A heartwarming and moving adventure that does excellent justice to the classic character.
  4. It's a welcome throwback to the carefully crafted family films of the studio era. The scenery is lovely, and the cast is entirely worthy of the enterprise (including the regal and athletic star).
  5. The new Lassie is faithful to Knight's story, capturing its sweep, Dickensian social contrasts and high emotion. All that is enhanced by a splendid cast.

Lassie is a dog movie even non-dog lovers will lap up.
  7. This latest remake goes back to the spirit and letter of Eric Knight's 1940 novel.

Despite the paper-thin plot, it was enjoyable and endearing enough. I really liked it.
