I suppose I can imagine why lots of people didn't like this movie. I feel something in common with James that makes me say that I like it a lot. I guess it's not for everyone.

You critics don't know what you're talking about.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't bring myself to dislike this movie. Yes, it's essentially "inert" and -- in places -- "inept" (to quote the Village Voice review), but it's cute regardless. To quote the Post, "James' [sic] character is a charmless, boring lump"; perhaps that's why I appreciated this one. I don't consider myself to be either charmless or boring, but I related with his character quickly and I suppose it's difficult to dislike a romantic comedy whose protagonist you feel any sort of association with. Inert, inept, indie, cheery, whatever... this is a movie that will leave you with a pleasant if vacant buzz if you'll accept the idea that romance and romanticism are separate concepts. Expand

A few funny bits float the film for a while -- it's always nice to see Peters onscreen, no matter what she's doing -- but it's really as showcase for Marcus, who also wrote the script.
  2. In lieu of developing a plot, the brothers opt to cram their cache of forced quirks and hit-or-miss sketches into a framework of predictabilities.

Smarter and more appealing than many other recent romantic comedies.
