When Lilya tells Volodya that he's her only friend, she's wrong. Lilya is exploited by her johns, but the filmmaker protects this piece of jailbait from the audience. We don't see a square inch of Oksana Akinshina's body. Lukas Moodyson doesn't cater to people who might be there for the wrong reasons. If you're simply there to see a great film by a great director, you won't be disappointed. "Lilya 4-Ever" is an engaging, mostly heartbreaking film, which closes on a disquieting note that will leave you sad but satisfied. Expand

It is certainly a flawed film that grows in importance the more you dwell on it: Lilya 4-Ever is undoubtedly one of the most incendiary, memorable films I have ever seen. It also makes a very current, devastating subject completely unforgettable. To quote The Guardian: "This is a Hell, but this is a Hell we can do something about." I hope people will see this film and try to do something about the illegal sex trade that is all too prevalent in Europe. This is a remarkable picture, one that will stay with me forever, and one that has undoubtedly impacted my life more than I could ever have imagined. Expand

One of the top 5 films I've ever seen. A work of art. Moodysson has made arguably the best debut in film history with Show Me Love, Together, and Lilja 4-ever, with Lilja 4-ever being his best work yet.

The director Lukas Moodysson said he wanted to achieve the effect of the audience being hit by a bulldozer when watching the film Lilya 4-Ever and to fight back. ?I don't want people just to be sad and depressed. Most people get angry. That's really the reaction I wanted.' 'The phenomenon of trafficking (underage) girls from the East into sexual slavery is increasing for many reasons: it's cheap, it's relatively easy, and it's a lot more risk-free than trafficking drugs. But, essentially, it is born out of economic injustice, out of the exploitation of the poor. I would like people to leave the cinema angry and let that anger lead to some kind of action. 'I would like to people know that I was really a political filmmaker'.? Already the filmmaker has caused (tsunami) a tidal wave of people fighting back. Sweden with its very liberal attitude towards abortion, co-habitation and sex education is now aggressively targeting a policy of outlawing the purchase of sex and has developed Europe?s toughest prostitution policies. New laws enacted are now designed to prosecute and go after the clientele rather than the prostitutes themselves and has been working as a major deterrent. Four-fifhs of the Swedish population surveyed support the new change in law. The Swedish government is now engaged in a battle with the rest of Europe to enact similar laws in their countries. Britain?s Home Office is highly impressed by Sweden?s focus on penalising the clientele and sees criminalisation as definitely an option. Expand

Overrated movie, to obvious without any depth. insted it falls short on "special effects" in this case, scene after scene with sexual assualts.

Not easy to watch, but Lilya (Oksana Akinshina) and Volodya (Artiom Bogucharski) share such a warm, genuine rapport that there is some redemption to be found, if only in their all too fleeting moments together. Immensely compelling. Akinshina is a wonder.

If there is a more frightening and effective portrayal of a young girl's slow downfall, I've yet to see it.

Lukas Moodysson is one hot director and writer! Acting, story and writing are excellent. Hollywood have been trying to lure Moodysson to the USA to direct a big budget movie. But he refuses to compromise his principles. I look forward to seeing more of his movies in the future.

Intelligent people with taste will love this movie. It reluctantly and sadly stole my heart. Rule of thumb: if someone can't spell "too" or "instead", don't listen to their review.

Riveting and powerful study of one girls journey from poverty and abandonment to life as a sex slave. Will impact all but the most cynical & hard hearted viewer, while telling one of the most important stories of the past decade. The issue of pedaling young girls for profit is a story that should be told in every high school.

Light entertainment, this is not. Unforgettable and challenging cinema, it is.
  2. 75
The movie, written and directed by Lukas Moodysson, has the directness and clarity of a documentary, but allows itself touches of tenderness and grief.
  3. Lilya's struggle to make a life for herself is both heartbreaking and heart-stirring.
