The occasional overdone moments are far outweighed by the heart touching warmth of this film. If you are looking for a deep dredging of of the human soul read Kafka or watch The Pianist. This is a light hearted reminder of some of the joy of life. And what's wrong with that? A good example of why one shouldn't listen to critics.

I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible. I want that 2 1/2 (!) hours of my life back. Friends whose taste I trust actually recommended this piece of crap to me. Just to start ... I don't think even in America could someone has idiotic as Hugh Grant's character be elected to lead the country. If Laura Linney's character liked her hunky co-worker so much, why the hell didn't she turn off her' cellphone when she finally lured him to her bed? (And her storyline was left hanging.) Why did the subplot with Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman seem to be about humiliating Emma's character? Why did Keira Knightly marry the black guy if she really wanted the other guy? And how convenient that in a huge city like London, all the children iin the story went to the same school. The movie's music was horrible, especially the little girl who was forced to sing like an American Idol reject. Were they going for the absurd when the so-so looking guy went to America and was overwhelmed with attention from prospective Playboy playmates? And the oh-so-cuteness of Colin Firth's character's and the maid's trying to communicate. The porn star body-double couple hardly had a story. But then, the stars of the movie hardly had a story. Hugh Grant's dancing-in-his underwear/"Risky Business" ripoff was unforgivable, as was the misogyny of the middle-aged men ending up with women half their ages who had been their servants. Expand

The movie was really good but there were bits in it that were so stupid that they made me cringe everytime i think of them. That idiot that goes to theUS to find easy american women. And that little kid who comes runs into the airport. So much for tightened security. The woman at the end jumping on the Prime Minister. Come on Curtis. What a load of crap. Your characters made the movie, definately not your story. Expand

Just a wonderful feel good movie where the many stories are pulled together piece by piece. Each time the director cuts away to another story, you wish he didn't but within seconds you are drawn into the next story emotionally. It is as if you are watching nine movies all at once? Somehow, it all works beautifully and the end result is that you leave the theater walking on air. Highly recommended. Expand

Without a doubt, 'Love Actually' is an entertaining and feel-good film, which I would seriously recommend. With a brilliant cast, this film delivers laugh after laugh, but keeps the balance with some very touching and emotional scenes. The characters are strong and very likeable, especially the wildly humerous Billy Mack. Emma Thompson is fantastic and plays her role with great sensitivity; she deserves as much credit as Billy Nighy has had for his portrayal of the fallen popstar. There are perhaps too many chatacters to concentrate on, and I'd like to have seen several of these more devloped. However, 'Love Actually' is genuinely funny and is impossible to dislike, especially with Hugh Grant wiggling his bottom to the pop song, 'Jump' Expand

This film is wonderfully feel-good, bitingly fresh despite its recycling of age-old film romantic situations (or disasters) and full of enough laughs, gags, tears and celebrations to win the heart of most sentimental (or even unsentimental) souls. While certain characters and their situations were not developed to their fullest capacity (a couple were probably unnecessary) the central subplots were intriguing, thought-provoking and, of course, good-natured and cheerful. There are enough poignant moments to keep realists happy, with enough romance to keep the saps content, and enough wit and sexual gags to keep the light-hearted entertained. In some places long-winded and, in the case of select few scenarios disappointing (due to their lack of conclusion), I found this movie delightful, and I walked out of the cinema with a goofy smile on my face which still remains when I imagine the sleekness and the audacity of such a charming and surprising masterpiece. ... bit off WAY more than it could possibly chew. Too many stories cloud the narrative and, in the end, this all ends up like wrapping paper discarded on the living room floor after the presents have been opened. A sad, sad product of a very novel idea.

In a time of hate and greed, it is nice to see that a movie like Love Actually can be made. It's pretty unrealistic as a film, but the cast are obviously enjoying themselves, and it leaves you with such a good feeling that it'll be hard not to have a huge goofy grin on your face when it's over.

I'm sorry, I MUST disagree. This is overrated tripe. It perfectly demonstrates Curtis's limitations as a writer. With the likes of Ben Elton he makes part of a glorious team, adding the right element of charm and (perhaps slightly cliched more often than not) loveliness and rounded, soft humour. On his own there is short of no character development or investment, absloutely no edginess whatsoever and not a hint of dark which every good picture needs - try looking at a blank white canvas and you'll be bored before too long. And for goodness sake, intelligent? I'm surprised no-one else felt a little surprised by Curtis's total failure to represent his Portuguese characters (that reference to Dunkin Donuts was horrific - don't they have their own fattening food? I would have thought so). And the Prime Minister of Britain walking into Heathrow with everyone else off the plane? Come on. A kid breaks through the crowd and rushes him as he enters and the security just stands there. Come ON. I can suspend disbelief so much, but to have to read reviews that call this movie intelligent, or that it is nice not to have our intelligence insulted as an audience is laughable in the extreme. 'The Porn Star story'? What story? There was NO story. Oh, I despair. You lot keep lapping this rubbish up and we may as well just give up on any decent cinema, studios will just keep giving you this mental chewing gum while you sit on your sofas with your soda and take-out pizzas. A movie for the Pottery Barn set. It looked great and commenced in high spirits and hopefulness. Then, descended into a really syrup-y love fest that spun outta control with a small boy eluding legions of Heathrow security and the PM making out on stage at a Christmas pageant. Too many hijinks, too much chicken soup for the soul.

Forget the professional critics as by now we should all know their opinions are completely worthless. I saw the sneak preview last weekend in front of a packed theater and the audience loved it. If it has any flaws, it's a simple feel good movie involving 9 different stories all going on simultaneously with the endings telegraphed a mile away. Despite this fact, as the story moves from couple to couple, you can't wait until it cuts back to the relationship you are watching. The directors timing is absolutely perfect. It features a great soundtrack taken mostly from the 1960's. The predominantly British actors are all wonderful and their timing in delivering their lines is impeccable. The comedy is intertwined to perfection. Bill Nighy as the old fart, over-the-hill, down and out pop singer absolutely steals the show. And, most importantly, we all see ourselves in the romance as it appears genuine. You will leave the theater in a great frame of mind. Just go see it and enjoy. Expand

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed. I usually check out the customer reviews b/c after Seabiscuit and A Beautiful Mind I realized that I could not trust reviewers any more, so I decided to use these user ratings, woops. I feel like this post board for this movie has become a bash-board for whoever Robert Plant is, he did some review I guess. The movie was pretty retarded but I walked out kinda happy, I still feel like I wasted my time. I liked the actors and their stories, even though some of them were really boring and uninteresting. I'm from the UK and I don't see how this movie could've offended some people... I spoke to a crew member on the film and he said that there were many moments where he could hear many cast members or crew members complaining about the character development, I couldn't agree more. It's a dopey, ditsy, light-as-a-feather holiday movie, no more, like a mediocre Christmas Special. Expand

This movie was pure genius. No slow idoitic wasteful ste up. The set up is given as it should be and we the audience are given the credit we deserve as being able to understand and follow it. Everything was perfect, i loved the whole thing, it shows every type of love. There are more jokes than there should be for a romantic comedy and the jokes are funnier than they should be for a regular comedy. This movie absolutely rules. I saw it two hours ago and it is april 28th, and i was totally immersed in it despite the christmas time period. This movie does it all, it even makes it feel like christmas whenever you are. Oh and hugh grant should probably quit acting because if he somehow gets any better than he was in this movie (which he hasn't been as good in anything else) i think i would....oh where am i going with this. Um,... just see the movie it rules. (for those who have seen it, please don't tell anyone anything while they're watching it, my brother did and it totally ruined it.) Oh yeah it doesn't get a ten because i don't like romantic comedies because of all the mushy stuff, but this is the most and the least mushy romantic comedy i've ever seen. It rules, actually. Expand

Like Moulin Rouge, it maintains that love is the predominant and only worthy positive force in the human condition, and like most romantic comedies pretends that that force exists in a vacuum apart from the rest of life's realities. So far so, so good, with clever writing and fine performances all around, but then shifts to become a parody of itself. It has a much more gratifying breadth of perspective than Moulin, but it just cannot resist piling on a series of forced improbabilities at the end like something it has earned the right to do in its sensitive exposition of developing relationships. Good point that people under the surface are caring creatures. Tasteless and crass in not simply letting that point speak for itself. The show tips its hand early on when the prime minister tells off the the 5-o'clock shadow president, who he finds offensive, not because it's what his constituents want to hear or anything like that. This film could have been so good, but in the end is a ghastly contrivance. Expand

I haven't seen anyone comment on this yet, but what message does this movie send to women? I will admit to enjoying parts of this movie, but felt overall that the message was very superficial, very lame, and very dangerous. The writer seems to think that love is just about finding someone you like to look at, rather than anything else. The stories that ended poorly were not about people unwilling to take a risk as another reviewer mentioned. The stories that ended poorly were really because of a lack of respect and communication--something this movie lacked as well, given that the scenes were 5 minutes per character at a time. The writer seems to forget that love is how you feel *and* how you treat someone else--he captured the first part, without concern for the second part at all. I have heard high school gossip that captures real love better than this film. Expand

I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances--Emma Thompson, Laura Linney and Bill Nighy among them. But, my God, what a maudlin mish-mash of overbaked optimism! I loved the film best when reality took over--which was all too rare: Linney's hopeless romance, Collin Firth walking away from his linguistically-challenged infatuation. Thompson's initial heartbreak. It was real, bittersweet, and true. When I had to suffer through yet another bumbling romantic performance by Hugh Grant (who, besides Americans, would elect someone this idiotic to their land's highest office?), a school play that looked like the finale of "American Idol", and a wedding that resembled the parade sequence of "Hello Dolly", I was actually angry. At its best, "Love Actually" is sweet and true and optimistic. At its worst--as it often is--"Love Actually" is manipulative, unbelievable, and just plain stupid. I think a 4 is a better vote...actually. Expand

I think most of these postings fail to take into consideration one of the prime motivations for going to the movies: escape. The film is, admittedly, fluffy but I don't know that Curtis was out to make Citizen Kane. It's a romantic comedy, a genre not particularly well known for its grounded realism. (And furthermore, why is it the case that only crushing hearbreak is considered "real"? Have none of you been in love?) Ultimately, I'm most disappointed in my peer-reviewers disillusionment. Perhaps this jaded perspective speaks more to your personal experiences than the film in question and I just think that's terribly sad. Expand

Isn't this comment website suppose to be opinionated? If you like the movie, that is great, if you don't, well that is how you just see it. There isn't any need to say things that you have lost your respect for people, becasue it is jsut a movie, it doesn't mean anything. But on the otehr hand, i did like this movie, it was hilarious. A downer i thought of the movie is that i really saw how the creators, directors or whoever TRIED to make some of the characters seem funnier than they really were. But i would like to ask ANYONE who knew what the music was called when the Prime Minister and the President were in a Press Confrence and the Prime Minister was stating that he will not tolerate the Presidents 'bullying' towards the the PM. In my humle opinion this film, is the film of the year, and hear me out when I say this. I think everyone is ignoring the whole premise of the whole movie, the fact that love exists in so many ways. How can you not swallow that whole. I am an eternal optimist, and this reaffirms my belief that there is love all around, and that while we all do stupid things, there is good inside of us. Each little story is showing us all the different facets of love. I don't think we all realize how much it's there. I think this film illustrates that, better than any film I have seen recently. I think Hugh Grant is once again, brilliant. How can you not like him, I think it's close to impossible. Add to that a number of actors, cast near perfect and you have a damn good movie. Listen to your heart, see this movie. Expand

Everybody grieves in their own way, and the little boy's method, following his mother's death, is to be swept up by the throes of puppy love. But the arc of this character might be missing a scene in which he weeps for his mother, since he doesn't cry at the funeral. "Love Actually" is too concerned with a cute payoff for his little boy crush, and forget that he's one parent short. Also, the Laura Linney character spends two years with the bane of unrequited love, and then takes two minutes to jump in bed with her co-worker. Worse, we end up hating this guy, because he looks glum and inconvenienced as Linney handles her mentally-impaired brother. But we have Bill Nighy(in an opening scene that recalls Robert Altman's "Nashville"), Hugh Grant, and a shaky marriage proposal in Portugese to smooth over some flawed characterization. "Notting Hill", "Four Weddings & a Funeral", and "Bridget Jones' Diary" weren't guilty pleasures. They were great movies. But "Love Actually" is. Expand

Chad, the imperfections you refer to is what makes this movie so great. Do you actually think that we all react logically to death? You have never heard of someone secretly loving but afraid to take action? Bill Nighy is an absolute scream. The nine stories are blended perfectly and one could only hope that the movie would have continued beyond where it ended. Because of all of lifes little pits, the fruit is more enjoyable and Love Actually is a major hit and a joy to behold. Don't miss it. Expand

This time, I agree with the critics, and not the moviegoers who rate this on MetaCritic. A strong opening, and an even stronger ending, but the middle was uneven. I agree with others that cutting down the story lines to something a bit more manageable would have given the story lines that stayed a little more depth. Keira Knightley is drop-dead gorgeous in this movie, but that story line could have been easily taken out without damaging this movie. Expand

This movie was great. Not all love stories end up happily after all and that is the point! Keira Knightly is gorgeous and she married the wrong guy (spoilers omitted) but crap happens. Alan Rickman strayed from the nest but was forgiven by Emma Thompson for the children's sake. Love is all around us and not every story has a happy ending. Many of you missed the point the entirely. This is one great movie wit some of the finest acting you will ever see. The storylines meshed together without so much as missing a beat. The music was fantastic. And Bill Nighy is simply drop dead funny. Great movie all the way a round. Expand

Adam Luther, what did you say? If you heard another positive review about LOVE ACTUALLY you'd Kill Bill? You're probably one of those psycho QT fans who thought that piece of blood and gore garbage was entertaining? What were you doing watching a romantic comedy by yourself? You're so off base on your review that it's frightening. First of all, I take issue with you in that the direction was absolutely masterful. The nine stories blended together as if they were one. As we are deeply engaged in one storyline, as as if on cue the lead change is made to the next story without missing a beat. The acting was superb. The stories were NOT all the same. And NOT each story had a happy ending. It reflected real life situations we have all been involved in. Loving someone from afar without having the conviction to do something about it is real LIFE. In LOVE ACTUALLY, some of the characters took the leap of faith while others were afraid to act. And, by not doing so, ACTUALLY lost their opportunity for LOVE. There were other storylines where other commitments prevented love from being fulfilled. As for the actors they were on top of their game, but none more so than Bill Nighy as the aging pop star who was extremely funny. Of course, you made no mention of him in your review nor did you comment on Hugh Grant who blended in perfectly instead of trying to steal the film. As for the soundtrack, all you need do is see how many CD's have already been sold to realize that you are so off on this one that your review should be filed in the circular trash can where it belongs. Liam Neeson was fabulous in that he emerged from his own problems to help his son ACTUALLY conquer his. If you look at how the people rated the movie as over 85% ACTUALLY LOVEd it you will see where your opinion stands? You are in the minority who did not enjoy LOVE ACTUALLY? Remember, what the world needs now is LOVE SWEET LOVE and LOVE ACTUALLY really hits the mark. Don't miss it as it is one of the best movies of the year. Expand

Let's get the obvious out of the way: "Revolutions" is an action film, a war film. We've been given all the ideas the Wachowskis wanted us to have, and this movie is solely about showing this final battle and the fate of Neo, the Matrix, and Zion. Don't expect something as innovative as the first "Matrix" ... it'll be awhile before something bends the action genre as much as that movie did. But "Revolutions," itself, is a remarkable action movie. What amazing visions it gives us; what a world this film has created for the mind and imagination. You do not criticize a war film for straight action, and you cannot criticize this movie either for that reason. Sure, it's gotten a little silly by now, and we could care less about Neo and Trinity's romance, but I doubt we'll see another movie this visionary for quite some time. Expand

Beautiful, sickening, deliriously funny yet uncontrollably upsetting, Love Actually is the ultimate rom-com by Richard Curtis, who also brought us Four Weddings & A Funeral, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones' Diary. Although I spent 3/4 of the movie wiping the tears from my ridiculously sensitive eyes, a heartwarming film nevertheless, and one of very few films which I intend to buy the second it comes out on DVD. Forget what the NYT or the Wall Street Journal has to say, hear it from a normal single woman with normal feelings - this is a beautiful film which will have you smiling and wiping the tears away in no time. Includes some brilliant moments, such as the porn star story, the little boy who's in love and the single English guy who decides to find love in America, yet has some terribly chin-shaking moments such as when Keira Knightley's character realises ..... and the Liam Neeson's wife's funeral. Just don't forget plenty of tissues! Expand

This movie was excellent. Stellar acting performances by Emma Thompson, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant carry this picture to heights which, quite frankly, I would have thought impossible from watching the trailers for the movie. While the premise is banal and somewhat goofy, the wonderful acting and the genuinely touching scenes make this a far better movie than much of what passes for "romantic comedies" these days. (The last great movie of this genre that I recall was "About a Boy", which also starred Hugh Grant.) The only reason why I didn't rate this movie a 10 is due to the somewhat weak and formulaic ending to the picture. It should have ended about 5 minutes before it actually did. Expand

A warm, fuzzy film. If it doesn't quite provide much in the way of interesting characters it is still very nicely packaged. To be sure the film is flawed. After all, for a film that preaches about love being transcendent and universal, I couldn't quite get my head around the fact that every single one of the get-togethers in this film were white and heterosexual, especially now that there shouldn't be any restrictions on the representation of such things in the media these days, even when the rockstar declares his love for his manager, the film feels the need to assert his heterosexuality when he says "come on, lets watch some porn"... way to make a certain 10% of your audience feel left out of the love of Christmas time. Indeed, the film's greatest strength is its greatest weakness, its willingness to please the masses leaves it with offensive right wing sentiments. I'm not saying that every romantic comedy these days should have ethnic minorities and homosexuals in them, but I think you're obliged to in a film that is aiming to be everything to everybody so to speak. Nevertheless, this is still a funny, entertaining film that manages to be fanciful without being delusional, ambitious without being self-indulgent and melodramatic without being banal. It comes as a great surprise that I am happy to say I enjoyed this piece of fluff. A true guilty pleasure, see it. Expand

This is my favorite romantic comedy of all time and all of you people that don't like must lack feelings or a heart. I am personally sick of critics who focus on specificites and ignore the question: did you actually like the movie? Did it make you laugh, cry, or feel some kind of emotion. Because, come on, movies are supposed to make you feel something and I think this movie did a perfect job of balancing the characters and the situations that they were involved in. Oh, so you say it was unrealistic, don't go to movies anymore than you stupid prick. If you want realistic, look out of your window, or stop typing retarded reviews on your computer and see if their is anything that you enjoy in life. I could see how this movie couldn't appeal to some. And the people I am talking about are the people who have been sucked in by television, computers, video games, or your life is just a blank canvas in which you are waiting to paint your view on life and while your at it you will dis anything that comes your way. Well, I'm sorry mister hard to please,(Critics in general) I will make sure to observe all the technical aspects in a movie so I can find a way, as you have, to suck all the fun and meaning out of life. Oh, by the way, love actually is a great movie and I strongly recommend it! Expand

This is a movie written and directed by Richard Curtis, the fellow who gave us Notting Hill and 4 Weddings and a Funeral with many of the same players as in the previously mentioned films. Starring Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Liam Neelson, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman and Rowan Atkinson, to name some but not all, the film represents a series of stories that get tied together by the time the movie ends. This is a simple, nice and very entertaining film with much credit to Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Liam Neelson and Hugh Grant for creating believable and very likeable characters. This is one of those "I'll sit back, relax, watch it happen and not intellectualize on the reality of anything in the film" type of movies that promises an enjoyable theatrical experience if you don't think too hard and, like most fantasies, just let it have its due. I found myself comfortably seated and enjoying each moment of the film despite many implausible possibilities. That being said, this is an entertaining movie and worth the ticket price and dedication of time you will not regret having given it. I give this film a 7.5 with a strong urging that you see it cause you'll end up feeling really good. Expand

If I hear another positive review of this garbage with the word "actually" used in it as a "joke," I'll f...ing sh.t my pants with anger. I like Richard Curtis as a screenwriter. Four Weddings is great, Bridget Jones and Notting Hill are shallow fun, all three movies very solid. This movie, on the other hand, is about the furthest thing from solid. The movie feels as if Richard Curtis had a bunch of ideas for romantic comedies that weren't interesting enough to fill a 2 hour time slot so instead he decided to make a compilation of all of those uninteresting/uninvolving stories. Each little story ended the same. Were there any real problems in any of these relationships? Not really, there were about two conflicts. One in one segment, the other in another segment, leaving us, the audience, watching pervasive shallow happiness. The direction is terrible, among the worst of the year. A movie where all of the stories are equally abrupt in how the two characters fall in love. Funny enough, one story deals w/ a young British kid who goes off to America to score big with the ladies there b/c they are "easy," and the American women in that segment DO come off as easy as hell. Funny enough, the British women in this movie don't seem much harder to get, judging by the stories in this movie. Some funny bits and some very good performances, who give the most that they could give with so little. The movie tries, non-stop, to make one feel happy. It never stops, it gets boring by the time the movie hits the 45min mark. Why did such talent like Liam Neeson have to do this movie where they are given nothing to work with, nothing to make amazing. I think I know, Curtis must have kidnapped his family or something to make such talent like Liam Neeson do this. The music in the film, and I usually like Craig Armstrong, but here his music seems like it is there to point out to us what we are supposed to be feeling at that particular scene. Not only that, the music is extremely reminiscent of any day-time soap opera. An opera of shallow happiness would probably best describe this movie. From every story I wanted more. Some of the stories were good ideas (i.e. the aging rock star and his relationship w/ his manager, the widower and his love-stricken son) but they are quickly ruined by lack of development. There are moments in the movie were things just seem to be so random, shockingly so, like out of the fucking blue random, I can't give examples because I don't want to ruin any of this for those of you who plan on making the mistake of seeing this movie. Liam Neeson's story in the movie could've, should've, been a very moving/funny/romantic/touching story of a man who lost the love of his life but finds a way to deal w/ his lose by helping his son find the love of his life. Instead, the story is nothing but extraordinary shallowness. The relationship between the father and son comes off as nice sometimes and VERY weird other times. Example, the dad says some jokingly negative (way too negative) comments about his wife, who JUST died like a month or two back. Sometimes he'd say things that were a bit too honest in front of his son, so honest that it took me back most of the time. The scene were Hugh Grant begins to dance, the scene tries way too hard to be memorable, to some song on the radio just comes off as random and pointless, where in "Risky Business" works. The entire movie I was waiting for that great monologue like in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" when John Hannah has the speech about his dead lover. That speech never came. Instead, the movie came off as if it were written by some guy who had never felt loss, or sorrow, or pity or anything, just some happy, shallow dork. Writer/"Director" Richard Curtis gets ONE thing right in this movie, and that is that he gives us the feeling that love is everywhere, THAT'S IT! This movie tries and tries and tries to be the ULTIMATE ROMANTIC COMEDY EPIC.... But it never will be b/c the secret to getting THE ULTIMATE ROMANTIC COMEDY EPIC is to have good writing, good character development, smart direction and inspired performances, NOT a whirlpool of wasted opportunities and shallowness. I have to agree with Mr. Luther on this one. This movie was very, very, very bad. The people who LOVED this movie have probably not seen very many good/half-way-decent films. The film was made to make one happy and it got so caught up in trying to make the audience happy that it completely forgot about substance. Carol Anne, in Mr. Luther's review he does mention the story with Bill Nightly being a very good story and he does mention how Liam Neeson is a great actor and how these actors do their best with the little that they have been given. What Mr. Luther fails to mention is that he enjoyed Kill Bill or saw Love Actually by himself and they he is a die-hard QT fan. These were not mentioned probably because they were unnecessary and not true. I hope Mr. Luther loved Kill Bill because it a masterwork of violence and action filmmaking, the best action film of the decade. Everything that Mr. Luther says couldn't be more true. I walked into this film having loved all of Richard Curtis's other works and walked out with doubts on the man's talent as a writer, and I am now fully convinced that he cannot direct a movie to save his life. Whoever gives THIS a 10 is only doing so because they walked out happy. If reviewers graded movies on how they felt after they walked out than The Godfather 1 and 2 and Citizen Kane and Midnight Cowboy and many more would all be universally panned while trash like this and The Cat in The Hat would be a 100. I tend not to trust these user comments due to the fact that people will only write a review on a movie that they loved or hated, never in between, that's why there are movie critics. Their job is to say their piece on a movie even if it was mediocre as hell. One thing that Mr. Luther got wrong was that the movie did not begin to bore when it reached the 45 minute mark, it began to bore once it reached the 10 minute mark. Carol Ann and Mr. Luther, you are both very angry people, especially you Carol Ann after just seeing and loving this movie. Be happy you ditzy .... ....! Spread your Christmas cheer! I am British, I hate Bush and I hate the American government and I hate this movie. Another thing Carol Anne, according to the user comments: Radio (which has a 39 on this site according to reviews) has a 84 for user comments. Expand

While hardly the best movie of the year, "Love Actually" is full of little charms and big laughs. Similar to some of Robert Altman's "Nashville"-style work in structure (though don't look for a grand Altman-esque sweep - this is a smaller movie), "Love Actually" follows a number of different stories. Not every story is entirely satisfying, and a couple seem more like the kind of anecdotes you would hear at a bar more than like actual stories. However, a couple of the stories (particular one about an aging rock star discovering the love of his life, and another about the Prime Minister of England) are really quite engaging and well worth the trip to the theatre. While this is not a "must see it on the big screen" kind of movie, it is worth a look. Expand

I am terribly offended that this Robert Plant who is British has the audacity to attack the public that liked this movie which I thought was great. But what is even more disturbing is his open admission that he hates President Bush, and the American Government. My response is IF not for Americans during WW II you little Nansy Pansy would be saying Zieg Heil today. You have one hell of a nerve insulting Americans as without us you would be speaking German. If you do not like our country and what America STANDS FOR do us a favor and take a hike. Metacritic is for rating movies NOT your political rants and raves. You know as much about US as the little you seem to know about LOVE ACTUALLY. The British actors were superb and I am sure that they would be highly insulted with your radical political babbling. Infused with the charm of Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman ("Tim" from The Office UK), Liam Neeson, and many others, these loosely connected stories weave together to make one of the most endearing and funny rom coms of the past decade. Unlike its American counterpart, this film underplays (to the extent that that's possible with an all-star cast) its principle actors, bringing a much-needed aspect to the stories. Sure some of the tales are a bit cloying, and some are a tad unnecessary, but such is the folly of a modern romantic comedy. The stories don't always hit home with the feeling they're trying to convey. Having said that, one story in particular really impacted me emotionally- something few films ever do, especially romantic comedies. Two particular performances stand out in this movie. The first is Liam Neeson's character as a widower, whom I found to be extremely endearing. His evolving relationship with his stepson (Thomas Sangster) is a delight to watch. It turns out he has chops for family roles, too, and not just high-impact drama and action. Who knew? The other gem in this film is the more ephemeral but ever-present Bill Nighy, who plays a washed-up old hack of a singer/songwriter whose glory days are well behind him. Even he gets his own love story, but that takes a back seat to his hilarious scene-stealing lines peppered throughout the film. All in all, this film is a fun, charming watch, if not a perfect movie, and is well worth seeing if you have any love of romantic comedies. It also happens to be a no-brainer alternative to that Valentine's Day knockoff cal. Verdict: Movie Win (for rom com fans) Expand

A roundly entertaining romantic comedy, Love Actually is still nearly as cloying as it is funny…its cheeky wit, impossibly attractive cast and sure-handed professionalism are beguiling.
  3. Reminds you of an elaborate Christmas card that tumbles apart with pop-up figures, silly/charming greetings and perhaps even a jingle. It probably cost more than the gift it heralds, and you can't help but laugh at the audacity of such an aggressively cheerful card.
