    Great story, but very poorly directed, and poorly shot. Good performances from Cloris Leachman and Wendie Malick, but they can't save this movie.

    Preposterous plot, painful dialogue, characters that would be an embarrasment to a grade Z sitcom, a ridiculously saccharine ending containing not a whit of irony. Oh, then there is the mother who appears to be about five years older than her daughter, and the magic record player that plays music without spinning the LP. Wow, it's bad !

    Refreshing, witty writing and mature characters -- great performances. This is a gem of a movie. Wonderful laughs, great jazz soundtrack. Beautiful too, with great stars. I haven't seen a movie this fulfilling in years. Don't miss it.
