  • Summary: In this irreverent comedy, awkward teenager Tobe sets off on a road trip to meet Monica Velour, his favorite '80s porn star, at a rare live appearance hundreds of miles away. Instead of the glamorous sexpot portrayed on film, he finds a 49-year-old single mom living in a trailer in rural Indiana, performing at seedy strip clubs to make ends meet. A starry-eyed Tobe, still captivated by his crush, befriends Monica, further complicating her difficult life. (Anchor Bay Films) Expand

This is Ms. Cattrall's movie all the way. Photographed more cruelly than a tabloid victim, she gives Monica a grubby dignity that her "Sex and the City" alter ego, Samantha Jones, would wholeheartedly applaud.

Like the poster, Meet Monica Velour is engaging to a point, but leaves much to be desired.

Writer-director Keith Bearden was also smart enough to round up a couple of other old pros: Brian Dennehy, as the hero's eccentric grandfather, and Keith David, as a wise collector of pop-culture artifacts.

In some ways this film's biggest failing is that it can't decide who's story it is telling.

The role of a former star of the "golden age" of porn sounds perfect for Kim Cattrall, and she handles it nicely - at least, in the rare moments when this indie comedy isn't terminally contrived.

A road trip into the heart of that bumpiest of territories, the adolescent id.

The film succeeds only in turning one's stomach via implausibilities, inanities and the unwelcome sight of Brian Dennehy's naked ass.

Extremely low budget Indie about a teenager in love with an aged former porn star. While occasionally reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite, "Meet Monica Velour" is much more serious, even in its dark humor. While it isn't a bad movie, it isn't particularly good either. The performance of Kim Cattrall is actually pretty good and a welcome change from her "Sex and the City" typecast she's been saddled with the past decade. Yeah, this film may not seem like much of a departure from the type of character she's been playing for a long time, but it did give her a chance to be more raw and serious. Definitely worth watching at least once. Expand
