  • Summary: The cocaine cowboys of the 80's are gone, but Miami's Casablanca allure, the undercover cops and the attitudes of Michael Mann's culturally influential television series have been enhanced by time in the feature film version of Miami Vice. (Universal Pictures)

It sheds the series' famous and influential pastel look and plunges its cast of villains and warriors into the 21st century.
  2. Sensual and scary, the movie is so visually textured you feel as though you're brushing against the screen.

    It's a sensational trip -- gorgeous, gaga.

Unlike most TV-to-movie transitions, Mann returns to his roots and delivers what amounts to a slightly overblown episode, brimming with style and characteristically short on substance.
  5. Miami Vice is the last of the predicted summer blockbusters, and it delivers a reasonable amount of popcorn excitement. But if nostalgia for the TV show is the source of your interest, expect some disappointment.

It's about guns and sex and fast boats, and, baffling as it is at times, it's still the kind of brutal fantasy that many of us relish a great deal more than yet another aerated digital dream.

Perhaps vice isn't what it used to be, or maybe Crockett and Tubbs just aren't all that interesting when removed from their appropriate time slot, but this may well be the dreariest and most monochromatic time you'll have at the movies all summer.

Miami Vice is hands down one of my favorite films of all time. I don't quite understand why it was never received well but I think it's just amazing. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are both great, as well are the rest of the supporting cast, Michael Mann did an incredible job directing the movie, the plot develops well and is very interesting, the action scenes are done brilliantly, etc. Honestly, I don't think there's a single flaw in the movie. It's definitely different, so I guess some people expected something else. It's not your typical action flick, that's for sure. It's almost more of an action-thriller in how it's filmed and presented to the viewer. The shaky cam and camera angles and effects work when used because of the overall feel. I'm not saying everyone will love it because it is a bit slower and replaces dialogue with introspection from the actors forcing the audience to pick up on the subtleties and nuances of the plot's development. Those things aren't in your face so some people might get bored with it. Not me. I thought it was great. Expand

A slow burning effort, actually improves on the second viewing. Kudos to Michael Mann for doing something different, on this evidence he is still one of the best directors in movies today. Expand

As a fan of the television show and of Michael Mann's previous films, I was really looking forward to seeing Miami Vice... unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the film and surprised with the flaws of the film. First let me start with the positives: 1. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx - ... these two really did a good job of playing their roles and it didn't take me long to accept them as Crockett and Tubbs. 2. I was also really impressed with how some of the scenes were shot... from the boating scenes, to the exotic locations, to the shootout scenes which are pretty graphic, but defintely worth seeing. Unfortunately, the negatives of the film overshadow the positives... One of the surprises about Vice is how badly the film is edited which was very disappointing since Mann's other films didn't necessarily have this problem. The other surprise is problems with the dialogue.... there are moments when the dialogue is confusing, but surprisingly, there are other moments when you just can't hear the dialogue. Also I was a bit disappointed in the casting of Gong Li. She's a wonderful actress and does a good job in this film, but somehow, the casting of her in this role didn't work for me. Finally, the plot of the film is a bit hard to follow(due to the dialuge/editing problems mentioned above) and also, don't expect an action film that is nonstop as this is really a brooding drama with action scenes. In conclusion, Miami Vice the movie in 2006 is like Miami Vice the TV show during its last few seasons on the air... great looking, but seriously flawed and recommended only to fans of the old TV show, actors or filmmaker. Terrible! Walked out. Zero chemistry between love interests. Uninteresting dialogue, boring action, worst movie i've seen in a while.

Absolute garbage... The realism within gun battles was refreshing and intense, but every other part of the movie was a mockery. The BS connection between Farrell and the Asian woman ruined half of the movie. 3 thumbs down. Expand
