  • Summary: In Ireland, where national pride is a passion akin to religion and romantic love, one man became a legend for his fierce devotion to his land and its independence. Liam Neeson stars as Michael Collins in a story about the real-life patriot whose bravery and unswerving dedication to the Irish people changed history as it made him into a legend. Collins' quest would bring a man raised on war into an even more dangerous battle for peace. It would cost him his life but would make him a hero for the ages. (Warner Bros.) Expand

  1. This is an extremely cinematic, beautifully made David Lean-type epic, helped by fluid and involving camera work by two-time Oscar-winning ("The Killing Fields," "The Mission") cinematographer Chris Menges.

Putting aside all the controversy, however, viewers are left with an expertly-directed and well-acted historical epic that disappoints only in its shallow perspective of the Irish/British and Irish/Irish conflicts.

Jordan has, though, made an important film, based on the wise predication that only through understanding can come peace. And if that sounds a bit pompous, it's also a damn good trip to the flicks.

Neeson's performance as the legendary Irishman reminds us of how large a presence the actor is: He fills up the frame with his voice, his hands, and his gestures.

There are pain and honor in this performance, and they constantly rise up to redeem a film that is less probing, less thoughtful than its director's claims and aspirations for it.
  6. Viewers may feel let down because the depth promised by the movie's visual artistry is never quite delivered.
  7. For me, the execution of the picture is so weak, so imitative, so facile that it makes all the thematic discussion seem idle. [25 Nov 1996, Pg.30]

Liam Neeson's portrayal is as close to the flesh and blood of Mick Collins as our generation will ever see. Although I felt the tone overall was more romanticized than necessary, and it gives de Valera a better-than-needed portrayal, I was moved to tears by this film. Sinead O'Conner's singing of "(S)He Moved Through the Fair" was amazing as well. Expand
