Pretty like Amelie, but emotionally empty and heavily masculine in tone. Jeunet's panache and flair is evident through set design and camerawork but the story feels detached in a way that doesn't reflect the risk associated with life and death situations. Jeunet's sophisticated style is let down by narrative ironicism and though enjoyable, there is only just enough comedy in here to propel the lightweight story. Obviously if you are expecting fantasy and surrealism then you won't be disappointed. It sounds like I am being harsh, but Jeunet is a master of his craft and this is not a masterpiece. 69/100 Expand

The Good: * Is a good comedy. * Is a little different than his past movies. * He got new actors a pleasant surprise. * It made me laugh. * Some small “performances” and nice surprises in the movie. The Bad: * The colors are horrible, almost ruin the movie. * Some of the comedy is predictable. * It is too childish, fantasy is good, but almost gets ridiculous. * I didn’t like the ending. Conclusion: Well just watch it, is a fun movie, you will laugh a little and you will have a good time, I can’t really tell or provide more details without spoiling it. Is a comedy/fantasy movie, just imagine you are watching a 3d cartoon like “Toy Story” or “Despicable Me” sit, let your brain rest for a while, and you will do just fine. Is not a new “Amelie”, and it feels more like “City of lost Children”, most of the characters are really really funny. I would like to add that that the last time I tried to watch Amelie, I just had to stop it after 30 mins, and I haven’t been able to watch it ever since. In my opinion this doesn’t surpass “Delicatessen” which is the movie I liked the most from him, and “Micmacs” almost got a “Not” recommended review, I know he likes fantasy and that is a comedy but in some parts the movie just becomes too childish and too cheesy for my taste. Please watch it you will have fun, I can almost guarantee it. Sadly, pretty much every movie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet after his uber-successful "Amelie" seems to be rather underappreciated, and Micmacs is no different -- it certainly didn't get any wide release where I live. In short, it's a charming story, it features Jeunet's trademark visual style, and is certainly worth watching. I don't agree with one of the previous reviewers that it is "emotionally empty", but I would go as far as calling it rather naive, which matters especially since there is some kind of moral undercurrent running throughout the movie. Then again, most mainstream movies are not particularly deep, and at least Micmacs contains great visuals and excellent acting, so I'm inclined to (almost) unconditionally recommend it. Expand

An intricate and daft tale of love, family and revenge.
  2. The whole thing is such a rare visual treat -- such a tres magnifique cinematic spectacle -- that those flaws are easy to overlook. Jeunet's film is hard to resist.

Jeunet himself describes the film best: Delicatessen meets Amélie. But we'd add that, while it's certainly breezy fun, it's not quite as good as either.
