  • Summary: First it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain... Bazil doesn't have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden, instant death. Released from the hospital after his accident, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is quickly taken in by a motley crew of junkyard dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba's cave. The group’s talents and aspirations are as surprising as they are diverse: Remington, Calculator, Buster, Slammer, Elastic Girl, Tiny Pete and Mama Chow.     Like "Amelie," Micmacs is visually dazzling, the ravishing images coming courtesy of "La Vie en Rose" cinematographer, Tetsuo Nagata.

    Turning the volume of his slapstick surreality down from 11 to 10, Gallic auteur Jean-Pierre Jeunet ("Amelie") hits the sweet spot with Micmacs.

    Jeunet himself describes the film best: Delicatessen meets Amélie. But we'd add that, while it's certainly breezy fun, it's not quite as good as either.

    For me, the mechanics or even the (excellent) designs are not enough. Jeunet's archness keeps conventional empathy or engagement at bay, and by design maintains a tone of artificiality.

    What an all round great movie Totally unknown but thanks to an airing on uk freeview might just be about to take off! Highly innovative steam punk revenge! The French humour translates to English tastes everything about this film is superb. Off to Amazon to buy a copy- this is one to watch time and time again!

    El hacedor de Amélie (2001) empieza a estancarse en el autoplagio constante y complaciente. La película nunca aburre, es cierto, pero entre el reciclaje de personajes, actores y fórmulas, y la avalancha de citas/homenajes cinefílicos, sí logra exasperar a ratos. Eso sí: hay por ahí un gag silente que hubiera enorgullecido a cualesquiera de los grandes comediantes americanos de la época muda… Expand

    Pretty like Amelie, but emotionally empty and heavily masculine in tone. Jeunet's panache and flair is evident through set design and camerawork but the story feels detached in a way that doesn't reflect the risk associated with life and death situations. Jeunet's sophisticated style is let down by narrative ironicism and though enjoyable, there is only just enough comedy in here to propel the lightweight story. Obviously if you are expecting fantasy and surrealism then you won't be disappointed. It sounds like I am being harsh, but Jeunet is a master of his craft and this is not a masterpiece. 69/100… Collapse
