Throughout the story, their lives thematically intertwine though they never meet, until the end of the film when, through different circumstances, they all end up in New York and their lives and the story gains it's meaning and resolve. Warm-hearted but clear-eyed indie effort richly repays audience patience during deliberately paced and provocatively allusive early scenes with a cumulative emotional impact that is immensely satisfying.
  3. Everyone somehow ends up in Manhattan for a contrived and predictable conclusion. In his last film role, the late Alan King is reduced to a stereotype of a cantankerous Jewish senior.
  4. An earnest but overly contrived and overly long tale.

You can see what's coming five minutes into the movie, but capable acting lends it a certain superficial charm.
  6. An overly ambitious, overly complex and overly long opus that bites off more than it can chew.

In the crass, endless Mind the Gap, Schaeffer dares to ape "Magnolia," telling five barely connected stories with all the grace of a juggler tossing open bottles of Drano.

I didn't expect much from this film, as it was required for a Philosophy class here at Notre Dame, but I was nothing short of impressed I didn't expect much from this film, as it was required for a Philosophy class here at Notre Dame, but I was nothing short of impressed and it quickly made my favorites list. The acting was suprisingly honest, the music was fantastic, and it evoked emotions out of me that any movie would be hard-pressed to do. I will be buying a copy immediately. Magnolia wishes it were this sincere. I'd say Crash is a better comparison, but it deals with of relationships, instead of stereotypes and ignorance. Expand

If you're not a critic you'll enjoy it. Critics judge, and critique what they can not do. Love the movie.
