Amazing presentation of cultural history. The film is very smart in the way that they present and interrogate the media which they use to construct their own narrative version of this controversial and vexing period of history.

I liked the way the filmmakers respected different opinions & attitudes of the people interviewed. Also the way that they use old movies and plays to give a more direct sense of the time is brilliant.

Admirably balanced production that pulls the curtain back slightly on a little-charted period of modern Chinese history.

Does a thoughtful job of streamlining the bloody realities -- both literal and psychological -- of China's Cultural Revolution into roughly two hours of film.

Gripping, relentlessly tragic retelling of life in revolutionary times.
