Perhaps the worst movie of all time. Awful, awful, awful. I feel like I've been stabbed after watching it. You could write a rather large book about just how terrible this movie is, but for now I'll stick with the 'highlights'. 1. The character of Ian. He's barely human. A walking doormat, bereft of an identity, emotions, or a spine. It's a wonder how he gets out of bed. So your bride to be has a pushy but loving family that won't give her any space. Do you react angrily to their constant demands? Try to instigate a little give and take in the relationship? Gently steer her towars some form of independence? Hell no. You bend over and take it as deep as humanly possible. Baptism? Church Wedding? Completely ignore his own parents? Ditch his best man because he's not Greek? Generally act like a human doormat? No problem! Not once does he get angry, or even question the motives of his new inlaws. So her parents don't want her to marry a non-Greek? His solution, to give up his identity and try to act as Greek as humanly possible. Which brings us to... 2. Stereotypes. Those crazy Greeks! Always with the wackiness! And look at the "ingenious" contrast between their over the top ways and those stiff, uptight Wasps. No doubt hilarity will ensue. One wonders how the write restrained from having Ian have a 'funky' black sidekick who can't help but say "awww helll no" when offered some Ouzo and the one millionth rendition of the Zorba dance. 3. Anti-feminist. The message the family sends to their daughter? You can marry anyone you want (and even then, not really, only if he tries really really really really hard to be as Greek as humanly possible). Not that you can be whatever you want. Or aspire or achieve anything you set your mind to. No. You can marry anyone you want, provided that we still control your life and steamroll your values whenever we choose. At the end of the movie, the father, in a great emotional display, traps his daughter by buying her a house NEXT DOOR. Wow, thanks dad. How unbelievably "out there". 4. It's not funny. If you love "everyone loves Raymond" or "Yes Dear" then you'll love this steaming turd. Witness punchlines you'll see coming a mile off! Enjoy the most tired movie cliches of all time! 5. One dimensional characters. Apart from the female lead, not a single character in this movie felt like a real person. And even then she was only one step above being a spineless automaton. We've got the senile grandma, the prankster brother, the wacky aunt, the overprotective father, the uptight Wasps. I must have missed the scene with the Rabbi, the Irishman, and the thrifty Scot. Conclusion: It's not that you can't have a good comedy based on ethnic and cultural clashes; it's been done a million times before. What's missing here is the clash, any semblance of conflict, or heart, for that matter. You don't have to be making highbrow arthouse cinema to do this well. For example, "Bend It Like Beckham" does much the same thing, only it has the advantage of a good plot, interesting characters and jokes that are actually funny. If I sound bitter, well, guilty as charged. I sat through a nine hour bus ride with this abomination blaring from multiple screens. After the huge box office and all the hype, I was ready to like this film. But it sucks. Terribly, horribly, utterly, completely. Expand

This was a fun movie, and despite being a formula comedy had some uniquely genuine situations. I had never seen being Greek presented as a curse before. Always nice to see surpises like this come out of the Indie world.

Frightfully bland and painfully mannered romantic comedy. I just couldn't find a any real zest here. The laughs are in short supply and there is no real charm here. Watch Bend It Like Beckham and East Is East instead for a more warm, intelligent and humorous look at interracial relations and give this one a miss.

This is really a fun movie! It captures a terrific diffrents of diffrent cultures and lets you see that we're all diffrent, but still...just fruit. A bit of a fairytale, but this is how a romantic movie shoud feel like. With a few greats scenes and things you can really learn from. You'll smile all the way through, sometimes even with a tear in you eye.

Charming throughout. The romantic comedy formula is so tired these days that I really appreciated the fact that, for once, there was no contrived obstacle that tears the characters apart only to be reunited in the third act. Instead, we're treated to a thorougly enjoyable, albeit extremely light summer movie.

The absolute best sleeper hit of the season. Just a wonderful feel good mouth-to-mouth movie that everyone seems to enjoy. I only wonder why it was not widely released in the theaters? Doesn't matter what nationality you are as it encompasses all! The cast is superb. I highly recommend it.

This film is okay. It's the copycats that scare me. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" would be so dead in the water if not for the performance of Nia Vardalos. She's real. Without her, the cliches would be more pronounced, like when Toula (Vardalos) ends her frumpy period by discovering the wonders of contact lenses. It's very disconcerting to see an independent movie which brings to mind "She's All That". But only the hardest of hearts would deny that there are some laughs to be found here. But only a truculent optimist would believe that the groom's disapproving parents could come around that quickly. Expand

This movie had a common story but avoided falling into phony "hollywood" traps. The actors were normal looking people. The sub-plots were not over developed to the point of cliche. The artistic brother, the wasp inlaws, the crazy family were all handeled in a gentle, not "beat you over the head with a message" way. The groom is never "overwhelmed" so we don't have to sit through the usual "How could I have given up the best thing that ever happened to me..."scene. This is a suprisingly refreshing take on a type of story we've seen many times. Expand

It was great to see Toula played by a real woman and not some Hollywood glam girl. It was much more authentic. The jokes hilarious and it was about people loving their life as family.

I know how this movie ends, though I could only force myself to sit through half of it. that's how predictable it is. For as unimaginative/predictable/dull a movie as this movie is (and believe me, it is!), I could not really hate it. The characters are all likable, and it is a generous movie, which obviously has some merit. Well acted, too. But it is so mindless, it's really a waste of time... Expand

This is the only movie I have truly enjoyed more the once. I've seen this movie 3 times and it gets funnier each time. The humor is so true to life ... there is something for everyone to relate to in one way or anoter. Even my husband who tends to only see action adventure thoroughly enjoyed it!! A must see for the entire family. I am going to see it again in the theatre and plan to buy it as soon as it is available. This is the only movie I am compelled to buy that I am aware of. As delightful, rich and warm as this film is, the sitcom is none of these things. Why change the main characters names, and why are they trying so hard to make us laugh? The film made us laugh without beating us over the head, slower and with more depth. You'd think that CBS would have noticed that the film made 250 Mil in theaters, and spent enough money on the sets to ensure seamless transition from the big to the small screen. All in all, if it ain't broke... I for one, will continue to watch to see if they figure these things out. Isn't it a shame that I have to be distracted by that. What I really want to do is watch these characters interact with the same love, annoyance and intelligence that they exhibited in the film. Also, in the pilot, where was the Windex, Greek word origins, and why was Nicko reduced to an idiot-punk? He had depth, feeling and talent before. Please figure this out, and slow down. I still love Toula's family. Chris. Expand

Umm, what's all the hype about this movie? As I was watching, I was waiting for a great moment, any moment, where I would laugh out loud. It never came. We Americans, as usual, have pretty low standards for movies and the like. This one wasn't funny at all. It wasn't satisfying. What it was was an indicator of the current state of movies today. Didn't break any new ground. You could have changed a couple of minor things in this story, and called it "My Big Fat Italian Wedding" or "My Big Fat Jewish Wedding." Case in point: Lainie Kazan usually plays Jewish mothers; here she plays a Greek mom. What an acting stretch!

This is easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I highly recommend it for those of the Greek culture.

I just saw this movie and ignored the hype beforehand and thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed so hard at times I was crying, probably because my background is Ukranian (Orthodox Religion) and I could relate to a lot of the movie. Yes, it was stereotypical (and I love Greece and the Greek people) but some things in families are stereotypical and it worked.

Funny movie, charming movie, full of life and humanity. I am glad I didn't listen to Owen Gleiberman's reivew, goes to show how out of touch and elitist some movie critics can be. Go see this movie!!!!!

This was a super cute romance. Although it was not typical, 2 super-model teenagers falling in love, this movie was closer to real life. Yes, this is a chick flick, but I have guy friends who liked it. While this movie is for everyone adults will enjoy it more.

I thought the movie was great! It had "real" women on screen, not the typical size 2. It was funny, and kept your attention, while making a point that women are not going to fit in someones "nut shell" breaking boundries. I give it a 10!

It was great. I hope there were more movies that bring out a laugh like that. The Greek character was a little bit exaggerated but it was worth it!

The theatre was packed and everyone was laughing. It's about time we all had a good laugh and this film delivers. You are bound to see something you can relate to in one's own life.

Silly me...I misread the title and thought I was seeing a geek wedding. I even went to the theater with a pocket protector loaded with pencils. It is a simple charming romantic comedy that makes you feel good...and you can learn so much from movies, all these years and I never knew Lanie Kazan was Greek!

This movie is so great, I wish I could watch it everyday. The acting is superb, I mean an all-star cast with the likes of Joey Fatone. I didn't know that the guys from N'Sync could act so well, I guess they just were never in the right movies...until now. This movie is all a romantic comedy could be and even more. I certainly wasn't expecting all this from a movie titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Okay, the aliens have finally gone. You guys please, they have probes in your butt, your ears, your mind. I think they are controlling your brain waves through a rare drug that only they can cultivate on Mars. The actors in the movie aren't really actors in fact they are aliens and they can manipulate your mind. But you see, I escaped, one tried to do me in but I just happened to be watching a good movie when it walked in and so it dropped dead to the floor. I know it is hard to beat these creatures because they are already in your mind, but if you can, try and watch a good movie, you might have to settle for two mediocre movies. You see, the reason I say this is, your mind has been so overtaken that you probably wouldn't know a good movie if you saw one, but your brain still might be able to watch a movie that only sucks. You and a friend can watch two such movies in a row and that will possibly bring down the creature. But if it persists like the rash on my butt then I am afraid the aliens along with their friends , the Greeks, will take over and turn us all into slaves. Expand

Why does this movie have such a low score? Sure it's not the best comedy ever, but with recent garbage comedies that have come out, with Rob Schnider and Adam Sandler, it's nice to watch a movie that actually has a very original sense of humor. It never was a chick-flick either which made it even better. The phrases with the Windex and "Opa!" made me laugh out loud. Definately my favorite romantic-comedy and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Expand

Was Hollywood sleeping? Talk about sleeper hits, MBFGW might be the biggest of all. It is absolutely hilarious. The word of mouth has kept it going. How many blockbusters do you know that become number one at the box office after five months? Just a wonderful feel good movie that makes you leave the theater with a smile on your face. Hollywood are you listening?

Fun movie but the Greek-American milieu in this movie lacks a unique flavor and aroma. You could replace the Greeks in this movie with Jews, Chinese, or anyone else and it would work just the same. What we have here is a bland generalization of an ethnic group outside the Anglo norm. Though the movie is embracing of Greek-American people and culture, it doesn't portray them in their true light. It's for people who think gyros is typical of Greek cuisine. Expand

Like Vardalos and Corbett, who play their roles with vibrant charm, the film, directed by Joel Zwick, is heartfelt and hilarious in ways you can't fake. It's a keeper.

Funny without out ever making fun, Vardalos mixes elements of ethnic stand-up, Cinderella romance and Bridget Loves Bernie-style situation comedy, all grounded in something very real.
  3. Vardalos is a breath of fresh air. After all the little nipped and tucked bunnies we've been seeing onscreen for so long, we forget what real women look like.
