Delirious, over-the-top, gorgeous to look at and with comic timing delivered at a machine-gun pace, Spain’s My Big Night is not only the fastest-moving film of the year so far this side of “Hardcore Henry,” but one of the most entertaining as well.
The premise of My Big Night is fine, but the film's execution is what really sells it.
Iglesia's riotous film is crammed with comedic chaos.
The movie has an exhilarating energy that is never exhausting, and the filmmaker’s trademark excesses, although toned down, are still at play. The meek should be wary; for everyone else, it’s party time.
Álex de la Iglesia's film is an explosion of kitsch, an intensely formalized mixture of farce and tragedy.
My Big Night, pitched in a state of perpetual frenzy, whiffs out in its ending.
De la Iglesia, a filmmaker known for his dark comedies, ultimately has nowhere to take this breathless ode to Fellini and his own mentor, Pedro Almodóvar, as well as backstage showbiz satires like Robert Altman's "The Player" and Michael Hoffman's "Soapdish."
