Critic Reviews

  1. A sweet, sweet movie; it's just one that celebrates the bond between a boy and his dog with heart and a heavy, handy hand.
  2. Romantically nostalgic, a love letter to growing up in simpler times.

The film's vintage setting is as much a character as any other. Some of the best moments evoke the best parts of easygoing small town life in a bygone era.
  4. It's gently funny, modestly scary in spots, full of valuable but low-key observations about life.
  5. 75
A movie like this falls outside ordinary critical language. Is it good or bad? Is there too much melodrama? I don't have any idea. It triggered too many thoughts of my own for me to have much attention left over for footnotes.
  6. 75
A film that proves even the tiredest genre can be reinvigorated in the right hands.
  7. Particularly unsuitable for cinematic adaptation, but when has that ever stopped anyone.
  8. 67
A serviceable time-passer for kids, grandparents, and poochophiles.

But it's the boy and the dog who make My Dog Skip resonate. The formula may be an old one, but it's still a good one.

Adds to the current crop of great kids' fare with a most-welcome old reliable.
  11. A standard-issue Hollywood family film about a boy and his dog growing up in a Southern small town during World War II.
  12. 50
A slice of '40s-vintage, small town Mississippi life, full of laughs and sweetness and a sorrow that may send more sensitive little ones home crying.
  13. 50
It plays out like an endless series of scenes we've seen before.
  14. Certainly there are people who will welcome this kind of "wholesome" family entertainment, but it feels false.

    Grows on you like kudzu.
  16. This is a sweet, gentle film - slow and sunny like a summer day, with a message that growing up can be hard, but can also serve as the wellspring of memories that will sustain you for a lifetime.
  17. 67
Atmospheric and genial, and you've got to love the spectacle of a dog driving a car or parading around town like the unofficial mayor.
  18. Though its sentiment may be lost on the very young, the movie is strictly two-hanky fare.
  19. It works because it never tries to be more than the very personal memory piece it is.
  20. Works best when it sticks with the gentle humor and pathos of its literary source.

I wasn't the only one crying in the theatre. Not by a long shot.
  22. Feels hokey, generic and dated.
  23. 75
A family movie with a heart and a brain. And if you aren't moved to tears, you might need an organ transplant.

    Superior family entertainment.
  25. I had to beg my 8-year-old to stop laughing.

The film is quite simple, but manages to be very good. The cast do a fine job here, and lead actor Frankie Muniz is very good compared to his other film roles. This is a well acted film, one that is sure to appeal to the entire family. This film has charm, a well written story and a good dose of comedy into its drama, which makes it a memorable film. The film is nothing new, but it works well enough to be fun, dramatic, sad and entertaining. Full Review »
