  • Starring: Nia Vardalos, Rachel Dratch, Richard Dreyfuss
  • Summary: Georgia has lost her kefi (Greek for "mojo"). Discouraged by her lack of direction in life, she works as a travel guide, leading a rag-tag group of tourists as she tries to show them the beauty of her native Greece while waiting to land her dream job. Opening their eyes to an exotic foreign land, she too begins to see things in new ways—finding her kefi and possibly love in the process. (Fox Searchlight Pictures) Expand

A pleasant if unremarkable romantic comedy that plays out like a sitcom with great scenery.
  2. The film is so brazen about its pandering, crumple-hearted silliness that it had me rooting for Vardalos to land her big fat Greek stud-muffin.

Ruins is sometimes as sunny as its locations but as familiar and predictable as a Greek diner.

Rarely has a film centered on a character so superficial and unconvincing, played with such unrelenting sameness. I didn't hate it so much as feel sorry for it.

  1. This is one of Richard Dreyfuss' and Nia Vardalos' best movies. It's a great movie for those of you who love Greek food or of all the places you've been in the world, you've never made it to Greece. Expand

No, it's not the best movie out there. Yes, it's terribly cliche. But I absolutely loved it. It's one of those romantic comedy, feel good, everybody has a happy ending, kind of movie. Expand

Just hang loose, relax, and trot along with the guide and enjoy the fun. The bunch of obnoxious international tourists may not be exactly the ambassadors for their countries, or they may not be one's cuppa tea, but believe me, these sorts do exist. Collapse

Bad acting. Lame plot. Brutally superficial dialogue. Yawn.
